TALES OF SWEET PROTECTION

SWEET protection AS is a Norwegian company based out of a small town called Trysil. Trysil is located 210km north east of Oslo close to the Swedish border. The area has a long history in skiing traditions; the worlds first official ski competition was held here in 1855, and the worlds first ski club was founded here in 1861. Several Norwegian ski-legends originate from our area. Today Trysil is the biggest ski destination in Norway. The story of SWEET starts in these surroundings. A group of friends having fun doing what they like the most; skiing and snowboarding in the winter and whitewater kayaking during summer - growing up in Trysil dont give you much of a choice. The focus was always to have fun, to dream and to progress with friends. As our skills progressed we got more and more product oriented. Day in and day out was spent experimenting, modifying and testing our gear to find the best setup. Influenced by our surroundings and the harsh climate from up north, we soon realized that functionality and purity are the key factors. This was also what initially started the SWEET idea. The idea of making the best possible products. Core products directly pinpointed towards the sports we loved. Products that would adapt to any situation in all conditions. In May 2000 the company was founded. Based on the same strategy: SWEET protection is a technology and design driven company focused on protecting the body against the elements. SWEET is a brand built on super-innovative product design, truly following a designed-for-riders-by-riders approach. Endless hours of research and development is behind every product in our line, dedicated to creating the best products possible - protection equipment so technologically advanced, so safe and so stylish that it becomes invisible when used, and its purpose sacred. THE INTENTION OF A HELMET

The purpose of a helmet is to reduce the risk of injury to both the skull and the part of the head surrounded by the helmet. The protection the helmet gives you depends on the circumstances of the accident and wearing a helmet cannot always prevent death or long term disability. To see how a helmet reduces the risk of injury, we need to look at the laws of physics. Sir Isac Newton made three laws about motion, and his 2nd law is the one thats most relevant; the law of acceleration. Acceleration is changing the speed or direction of an object, not only speeding up, but also slowing it down to a stop. Newtons 2nd law goes like this:

*F is force, m is mass, a is acceleration, v is velocity and t is time. Here Newton is saying that the rate of change in the momentum (mv) of an object is directly proportional to the amount of force exerted upon the object. In real life, while skiing or snowboarding, theres only one factor a helmet is able to influence in this equation, and thats the time. When you fall, you have a certain weight and speed, which is pretty much up to you. From the equation above you can see that the greater the time within the impact, the less force is subjected to your head. In other words, a helmet absorbs energy by increasing the duration of the impact. There are several certification standards for helmets, and SWEET helmets are certified according to the CE EN 1077, which is the European standard for skiing and snowboarding. It makes sure that SWEET helmets fulfill all requirements for a skier or snowboarder, including the ability to absorb energy.

THE CE EN 1077 STANDARD

There are six major requirements: 1. Field of vision Making sure the helmet design does not interfere with the users field of vision 2. Extent of coverage Making sure the helmet covers all necessary parts of the head 3. Shock absorbing capacity The most important is the shock absorbing capacity of the helmet. This is tested in a specialized instrument where the helmet is dropped from 1.5m onto a solid metal anvil with a 4 kg metal head inside. Inside the metal head theres an accelerometer that measures the forces within the impact. The helmets are tested in three conditions: Room temperature, -25C, and after artificial aging. Each helmet is tested on several areas (crown, side, rear & front). The peak acceleration must not exceed 250G for any of the impacts. 4. Resistance to penetration While skiing or snowboarding theres a risk of poles, skis or branches penetrating the helmet. The resistance to penetration is tested by dropping a hammer with the mass of 3 kg from 75cm onto a sharp cone shaped metal punch placed against the helmet. The point of the metal punch must not reach the head inside the helmet. 5. Retention system performance This test covers the strength of the retention system (webbing), as well as its effectiveness, i.e. the webbings ability to keep the helmet securely positioned on the head. 6. Durability After all these tests the helmet should not show any damage that would cause any additional damage to the wearer.

HELMET CONSTRUCTION IN GENERAL

Theres usually two ways of constructing a helmet to fulfill the requirements in the CE EN 1077 standard: 1. In-mould An in-mould helmet is characterized by a very thin shell, usually made of Polycarbonate, where the foam padding is molded into the shell in one process. This is a very effective production process and gives the benefit of a very light helmet. The downside is that in-mould helmets have a lot of volume, and theyre not very durable. 2. Plastic shell A plastic shell helmet is generally manufactured in two pieces that are produced separately. One is the shell, which usually is an injected molded ABS plastic. The other is the padding. The two parts are assembled, and give a very durable helmet. The downside is that plastic shell helmets are usually heavier, and despite having a thicker outer shell, they still need some volume in order to fulfill the requirements of the standard.

SWEET HELMET CONSTRUCTION

Our goal when constructing helmets is to make a very durable construction that protects the head with less volume than usual. We also want an excellent fit, and a relatively low weight. In order to accomplish this, we have developed a brand new way of constructing a helmet. The most striking features are the carbon fiber reinforced composite main shell, but also the fact that all SWEET helmets are constructed neck hugging, which means the shell curves around the head and hugs the nape of the neck. This is solved by either splitting the shells in two pieces or by molding the shell in one piece, using a very sophisticated collapsible core tool with several sliders. All our helmets share the same basic construction, with the following main components with regards to the protection performance: 1. Carbon fiber reinforced composite shell 2. Neck-hugging construction 3. Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) padding 4. Fit Pads 1. Carbon fiber reinforced composite shell All SWEET helmets are constructed from continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting resin composites. Theyre produced by arranging the carefully selected fiber-resin mixture into the desired shape. The configuration and direction of the fibers are optimized to provide maximum performance before they are cured inside a matching mould. The curing process in the mould is accomplished by exposing the material to elevated temperatures and pressures. The applied pressure provides the force needed to squeeze excess resin out of the material, to consolidate individual plies, and to compress any voids. The technology involved is hard core, and often used in the aerospace and car racing industry, where performance of the material is crucial. Carbon fiber reinforced composite key features: - Light weight - Extreme strength to weight ratio - Extreme stiffness / rigidity - Corrosion resistant - Fatigue and crash resistant - Impact absorbent - Temperature resistant The carbon fiber reinforced composite shell is vital in distributing the forces, and makes sure that the padding will largely deform from the inside, rather than from both sides which would be the case with a soft outer shell. This means the padding is using its energy absorbing properties to slow your head down, not in being deformed by surrounding environment. When protection relies on padding alone, all the energy must be absorbed through a concentrated point of impact, rather than distributed over a large surface area. By distributing the forces were able to increase the duration of the impact with less helmet volume. 2. Thermoplastic occishell All SWEET helmets are constructed neck hugging, offering great fit and comfort while keeping the volume as low as possible. This is unique to all SWEET helmets, and a crucial part of the fit and performance. Its designed to grip your skull from underneath, which prevents the helmet from rolling on your head. However, its most important task is to protect your occipital lobe and surrounding hemisphere. 3. Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) padding Crushable foams are ideal for helmets designed for one hard impact. The usual padding material in most sports helmets is EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene), which is very effective foam for absorbing impact. The impact is absorbed as the cell walls in the foam crush on impact and slow the head down gradually. SWEET, however use another crushable foam called Expanded Polypropylene (EPP). EPP is more expensive, but it also has its technical benefits; better performance in cold weather and a higher memory, allowing the padding to return to its own shape after impact. This is also why EPP often is referred to as multi-impact foam. SWEET protection AS recommend you to replace a helmet after a severe blow because theres no way of monitoring the forces the helmet has been exposed to, and despite the foams high memory, the cell walls are still crushable if the forces are great enough (and then they wont offer sufficient protection during the next impact.)

4. Fit Pads A properly fitted helmet will be the most comfortable, but more importantly, the better the fit, the better the performance upon impact. Helmets offer optimal protection only when fitted and worn properly, thus, finding the right size and model is crucial. If the helmet does not fit correctly, your head will accelerate across the gap before it hits the padding, making it harder for the padding to slow down the impact. If a helmet is properly fitted, it will start to slow down the impact immediately, thus reducing the peak G force on the head. Every SWEET helmet comes with a fitting kit consisting of several different self adhesive fitpads. This will ensure you get as good a fit as possible. Theres also a fitting manual that explains how to proceed, step by step. Note that there are circumstances where the helmet will not fit due to the difference between the shape of the helmet and the shape of your head. In cases like this, you may have to try on a few different models to find the right one. THE INTENTION OF A BACK PROTECTOR Ski and Snowboard back protectors are devices worn within or on top of other protective clothing, covering at least the central part of the back from the waist to the neck. Case studies of motorcyclists show that from all accidents, about 13% of the injuries are serious back injury. However, only 0,8% of the injured riders suffer a fracture of the spine and less than 0,2% of injured riders have a serious back injury resulting in neurological damage. All serious injuries to the back are usually caused by axial forces due to blows on the head, or bending and twisting forces on the back caused by blows to the shoulders, hips and other parts of the body. Back protectors do not provide protection from these forces. The majority of the more minor injuries are bruises and strains caused by direct blows, and back protectors can provide good protection against these. The scapula if often injured, protection should therefore extend to cover this area. The performance requirements have been chosen as a best practical compromise between protection, comfort, and ergonomical requirements. The test methods are designed to provide information on protection against impacts against edges such as stones, trees or other hard natural/or unnatural objects. The force levels in the tests do not compare directly with the forces to which riders are exposed in accidents, but experiences have shown that products meeting the requirements of the European Standard greatly reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. GORE-TEX TECHNOLOGY
GORE-TEX fabrics are created by laminating a special GORE-TEX membrane to high performance textiles, then sealing them with an innovative solution for 100% waterproof protection. The secret of GORE-TEX fabrics lies within its revolutionary bi-component membrane. The expanded (ePTFE) portion of the membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times bigger than a molecule of moisture vapor. So while water in its liquid form cannot penetrate the GORE-TEX membrane, moisture vapor (a gas), can easily escape. Integrated into the ePTFE structure is an oleophobic, or oil hating, substance that allows moisture vapor to pass through, but creates a physical barrier that prevents contaminating substances such as oils, cosmetics, insect repellents and food substances to penetrate the fabric. The result is a totally waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane. This is what waterproof and breathable is all about! The properties of the GORE-TEX membrane at a glance: Durably waterproof Highly breathable Extremely cold resistant Tremendously crease resistant Especially long lasting The holes made by needles in seams may be small, but they can cause leaks. Thats why even the most waterproof, breathable, windproof fabric wont keep you dry and comfortable if the seams are not completely sealed. For absolute waterproofness, GORE-TEX products rely on Gore-seam tape and micro Gore-seam tape technologies. These tapes completely seal every tiny hole created by sewing machine needles when GORE-TEX fabric is made into garments. Two important terms on all GORE-TEX materials: Waterproofness The resistance of a material to water penetration. An item can be classed as waterproof when it resists water to a certain level. Waterproofness is measured this in column water pressure. Literally, a column with water is filled, and whatever level it reaches before the water forces its way through the fabric will define its level of water resistance. All GORE-TEX materials are guaranteed minimum 28.000mm. Breathability (RET) This is a measure on the fabrics breathability. The lower a fabrics resistance to moisture vapor transfer, the more/better it breathes. RET (evaporative resistance of a textile) value. Lower RET = better breathability. Why is breathability important? To maintain a highly efficient heating system, the human body must perspire. If this perspiration is not allowed to dry, it can build up and chill the body from inside the clothing. The breathability of a fabric is a crucial factor in protection, both inside and out.

3-LAYER vs. 2-LAYER GORE-TEX GARMENTS

All GORE-TEX outerwear comes in two different constructions; 3-layer and 2-layer. Both provide reliable and effective protection against the elements; totally waterproof, totally windproof and highly breathable. Special Gore-seam tape technology ensures all seams are 100% waterproof. Heres a quick look at the differences between the two constructions: 3-layer GORE-TEX garments In the 3-layer design, the GORE-TEX membrane is bonded to the (inside) lining on one side, and to a breathable and abrasion resistant outer fabric on the other (outside). The result is a sandwich of three fabrics, hence the name 3-layer construction, bonded together in a single, tough layer. Benefits: 3-layer GORE-TEX fabrics sandwich-style construction provides enhanced breathability and durability. Its the favorite among advanced users, and used in our top of the line clothing. Its also lighter than 2-layer GORE-TEX fabric, since it requires no additional free-hanging liner. Considerations: The 3-layer construction is slightly stiffer and less subtle than 2-layer. It normally feels a little crunchier 2-layer GORE-TEX garments In the 2-layer construction, the GORE-TEX membrane is bonded to a breathable and abrasion resistant outer fabric. The lining remains loose and is there to protect the GORE-TEX membrane from abrasion. Benefits: 2-layer garments are warmer, softer and with a more comfortable feel. On 2-layer garments its also easier to implement more details. Considerations: 2-layer GORE-TEX garments will normally have a higher RET (evaporative resistance of a textile) value. (Lower RET = better breathability). 2-layer garments are also slightly heavier than 3-layer garments. 3L GORE-TEX PRO SHELL GORE-TEX Pro Shell is the optimal solution for professional outerwear to use under extremely tough conditions. The 3-Layer construction comprises a specific high performance GORE-TEX membrane, bonded to a tough outer material and a specially developed robust woven inner lining. The result is an extremely rugged and durable laminate, made to meet the demands of outdoor professionals and serious enthusiasts. To ensure 3-Layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabrics perform to consumers` expectations, we have tested the waterproofness and breathability in laboratory conditions very similar to intensive field use, (as well as our mandatory extensive outdoor tests performed on each product). The result: 3-Layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabrics are not only extremely breathable but also remain absolutely waterproof after more than 500 hours of wet flex and abrasion tests. GORE MICRO GRID BACKER TECHNOLOGY The GORE Micro Grid Backer Technology is an innovative patent pending internal backer fabric, which is used in 3-Layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell jackets instead of tricot knit. The GORE Micro Grid Backer Technology is a thin, low denier, low density woven fabric backer. It allows the garment to travel smoothly over mid-layers making the garment even more durable. The woven backing improves internal abrasion and improves snag resistance, enhances garment breathability and decreases garment weight. GORE-TEX PERFORMANCE SHELL The 2-Layer construction used for the GORE-TEX Performance Shell is designed for a wide range of outdoor activities. A specific GORE-TEX membrane is bonded to the outer material and protected on the inside by a independent and separate lining. GORE-TEX Performance Shells provide breathable comfort, and durable waterproof and windproof protection. WINDSTOPPER WINDSTOPPER garments offer total windproofness and maximum breathability to keep you comfortable, warm and dry from the inside. WINDSTOPPER products are 2X more breathable than comparable windproof products, and offer the same level of breathability as comparable nonwindproof products.

Every square inch of the WINDSTOPPER membrane contains 1.4 billion micropores. This revolutionary structure is ultra-light, ultra-thin, and highly resistant to extreme temperatures. The microporous structure of the WINDSTOPPER membrane ensures maximum breathability; cold wind is kept out, yet moisture vapor can escape easily. Integrated into the ePTFE portion of the membrane is a hydrophobic, or water-hating, substance to keep external moisture away from your skin. This thermo regulating effect keeps you comfortable longer, allowing you to perform at your best. PRIMALOFT The human body uses energy to keep warm. PrimaLoft uses a patented microfiber structure to help the body retain warmth and conserve energy. PrimaLoft is as warm as natural down, highly compressible, breathable, and offers superior water repellency. It allows you to remain dry, warm and comfortable even under the most extreme conditions. These performance qualities and technical benefits make PrimaLoft the thermal insulation of choice for active outerwear. PrimaLoft insulation products offer superior performance for high quality cold-weather gear. PrimaLoft is incredibly soft, lightweight, breathable and with excellent water repellency so you remain dry, warm and comfortable even under the most extreme conditions. Compared to natural Down, PrimaLoft will perform better when wet, and are easier to dry quick. Thus people who expect rainy or wet conditions might be better off choosing PrimaLoft. DOWN Down offers excellent thermal properties, and has good lofting characteristics. This means that the down traps small pockets of air efficiently. The small pockets of air provide the thermal barrier. Down has the added characteristic that it may compress easily into very small storage space. Down consists of clusters of fluffy filaments that grow from but do not contain the central quill shaft. It is the light, undercoating that geese, ducks, and other waterfowl have to keep them warm. Other birds do not produce down. Because of its three dimensional structure and ability to loft, each down cluster traps more air for its weight than any synthetic. Every ounce of quality down has about 2 million fluffy filaments that interlock and overlap to form a protective layer of still air that keeps the warmth in, and the cold out. Down insulation is rated by fill power, measured as the number of cubic inches displaced by a given ounce of down. Higher fill-power downs will thus insulate better than lower fill-power downs of the same weight. Insulation in most outdoor equipment garments range from ~400 to 800. For outdoor equipment, down is considered to be the single best insulating material available, due to its light weight, compressibility, and heat retention capabilities. FLEECE Polartec is the world leader in technical, synthetic fabrics. Fleece were invented in the 1980s and named by Time magazine as one of the great inventions of the 20th century. Fleece is basically a synthetic, 100% polyester fabric with an altered structure. This altered structure facilitates moisture transfer through the fabric. Polyester fabric, in and of itself, does not absorb moisture at all Instead fleece wicks moisture away from the skin. In short; unbeatable warmth and comfort with high thermal and moisture-wicking capacity. Polartec Power Stretch The fabrics feature body-hugging 4-way stretch and are very breathable. It will keep you dry when you sweat and provide warmth without weight. Polartec Power Stretch actively pull moisture away from your body (wick), dry quickly, breathe and be comfortable on your skin. No matter what season, weather condition or activity you face, this is the most critical layer for comfort and performance. Polartec Thermal Pro All insulation fabrics operate by trapping warm air pockets and holding them next to your body. The more loft a fabric possesses, the more air it will trap. We take this guarantee seriously. If you are not completely satisfied with the waterproofness, windproofness or breathability of your GORE-TEX outerwear then we will repair, replace or refund your purchase price. All GORE-TEX garments carry the Guaranteed to keep you dry brand promise.

WASHING & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

GORE-TEX products are not only built to last, theyre easy to take care of, too. Routine care and maintenance on your part will ensure the highest performance from them and extend their useful lifespan. Follow the recommended care instructions - typically found on an inside tag - and your GORE-TEX products will be ready to go when you are. Wash Machine-wash warm (104F / 40C). Use powder or liquid detergent. No fabric softener. Dry Clean If professionally dry-cleaned, request clear distilled solvent rinse and spray repellent. Iron Steam-iron warm. Place a towel or cloth between the garment and the iron. No need to iron the garment until it is completely dry. Bleach No chlorine bleach. It may damage your garment. Dry Tumble-dry warm. The heat from the dryer will help to reactivate the durable water repellent (DWR) treatment on your garments outer fabric. Water repellent treatment GORE recommends applying a topical water repellency restorative (DWR treatment) for outdoor fabrics, available at your local outdoor retailer. We do not recommend wash-in treatments as they can affect the garments breathability. Stain removal Use a pre-wash treatment such as Shout or Spray n Wash. Rinse well. Restoring water repellency Wet out can put a real damper on your day. Thats when liquid saturates your garments outer fabric layer above the GORE-TEX membrane, leaving you feeling damp and clammy - as if your garment were leaking, even when its not. To prevent wet out, all GORE-TEX shell fabrics are treated with an ultra-thin treatment called DWR, a durable water repellent polymer that is applied to the outermost fabric layer. DWR penetrates the fibers and lowers the surface tension of the fabric, causing water to bead up and roll off this outer layer of fabric, instead of being absorbed. DWR is not permanent. Regular wear and tear, exposure to dirt, detergents, insect repellent, and other impurities can shorten its lifespan. The good news is that restoring the water repellency of your GORE-TEX shell is extremely easy. How to restore water repellency Just machine wash it, rinse it, and put it in the dryer. Follow the instruction above or on the care label inside your garment. The washing removes dirt and the heat from the dryer helps redistribute the DWR treatment on the fabric surface. If water fails to bead up on the surface of your cleaned and tumble-dried garment, its DWR treatment has reached the end of its useful life. You can restore the garments water repellency by applying a typical water repellency restorative (DWR treatment) for outdoor fabrics, available at your local outdoor retailer. We do not recommend wash-in treatments, as they can hinder your garments breathability.
