STOICHIOMETRY PART 4

Name: Nifer Sebastian C. Malinao Score:

Teacher: Ms. Jl Nazareno Date: 08/01/2022

Learning Objectives: At the end of this task, the learners will be able to:
1. construct mole or mass ratios for a reaction in order to calculate the amount of reactant needed or amount of products
formed in terms of moles or mass
2. calculate the %yield and theoretical yield of reaction
3. explain the concept of limiting reagent in a chemical reaction; identify the excess reagents
4. calculate reaction yield when limiting reagent is present.

I- Introduction
• Reaction stoichiometry refers to the mass relationship between the reactants and products.
• Limiting Reagent - the reactant used up first in the chemical reaction.
- is entirely consumed when a reaction goes to completion
- it limits the amount of product(s) that can be formed
● Excess reactants (excess reagents) are reactants present in quantities greater than what is needed by the reaction; they
are not completely consumed in the chemical reaction. It is the substance that remains when the reaction stops.
• PERCENT YIELD - indicates how much of the desired product is obtained in the reaction
- measure of the efficiency of a particular reaction or process
- ranges from 0%-100%
• % yield = x 100
• THEORETICAL YIELD - maximum amount of product that would result if the limiting reagent is completely
consumed
• ACTUAL YIELD - is the quantity of the desired product actually formed

II. Calculate the following problems. Show your complete solution.

1. People in confined spaces like those of space vehicles are at risk of carbon dioxide intoxication due to build-up of
the gas. In a space shuttle, the carbon dioxide expelled by the crew is removed from the air by a reaction within
canisters of lithium hydroxide. The reaction is, LiOH + CO2 → Li2CO3 + H2O

a) How many moles of LiOH can be used to remove the CO2 gas expelled by each crew if on the average,
each exhales about 20.0 mol of CO2 daily?
b) If 2355.0 g of LiOH is left in a canister, is this enough to remove all of the CO2 in a space vehicle if the
total amount of CO2 expelled by the astronauts through breathing is 2395.0 g? What does this imply?
c) If each contaminant control cartridges contains 750. g of LiOH, how many cartridges must be carried on
board the space station assuming that six astronauts can each expel 1.01 kg of CO2 per day? The mission is
scheduled to last for 20 days.

2. DDT, C14H9Cl5, an insecticide harmful to fish, birds and humans, is produced by the following reaction:
C6H5Cl + C2HOCl3 → C14H9Cl5 + H2O.

In a government lab, 1142 g of chlorobenzene, C6H5Cl, is reacted with 485 g of chloral, C2HOCl3.
a.) Which reactant will be consumed first and why?
b.) How much of the excess reactant will be left at the end of the reaction?
c.) If the actual yield of DDT is 200.0 g, what is the percent yield?
