Introduction
The world's top concern is climate change, and every country is implementing a different
protective measure. Planting trees is one of the primary protective measures; this system has
become globalized, and Ethiopia has been leading the way in this regard for the past four years.
Our world consumption of plants is increasing day to day in order to get financial gain, clear air,
and for different productions in order to meet this requirement there should be additional spaces
for the propagation of plants that directly ride us toward the nursery center concept.
There has been increasing demand for horticultural crops, particularly fruit and ornamental ones in
Ethiopia's urban and rural areas. With this, the demand for good quality planting materials has gone up
and hence the nursery business has developed rapidly in recent years in our country. Nursery product is no
longer restricted to orchards or large parks and gardens. It has entered into high-rise buildings, gardens,
offices, factories, business houses, hospitals, hotels, backyards, roadsides in cities, rooftops, etc. for
decoration purposes.
A nursery is where plants are propagated and grown to a desired size. In a word, a nursery is a center of
seedling production where seedlings are produced and taken care of until transplantation in the main field.
Mostly the plants concerned are for gardening, forestry, or conservation biology, rather than agriculture.
They include retail nurseries, which sell to the general public; wholesale nurseries, which sell only to
businesses such as other nurseries and commercial gardeners; and private nurseries, which supply the
needs of institutions or private estates.
1.1Project title;
Wangarii Plant Nursery Center
1.2 project location
Wangarii Plant Nursery Center is located in Sheger City for two main reasons firstly for its availability of
endemic plant species and secondly for its location for easy transportation.
1.3 goal of the project
Our plant nursery project aims to provide high-quality and endemic plants to the local community and
export them to the rest of the world while promoting environmental sustainability and creating economic
advantage for the country. Plant nurseries also play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and mitigating
climate change. Our project will provide a source of fresh produce and create job opportunities for local
residents. We plan to grow various plants, including fruits, flowers, vegetables, and herbs, using
sustainable farming practices. Our goal is to create a self-sustaining nursery that can serve as a model for
other nurseries in East Africa.
1.3 Significance of the project
A nursery is the only place where seedlings can be hardened against natural elements. Plant nurseries play
an important role in the horticultural/forestry industry and in the development of gardens and landscapes.
They provide a reliable source for a wide variety of plants, and many people rely on them for the plants
they need to beautify their homes and gardens.
Establishment of nurseries is important for the following reasons:
Production of proposed size and age of seedlings.
Production of the desired number of seedlings.
Production of healthy plants of the desired app.
Production of plants of superior quality.
Production of desired plants at the right time.
Production of seedlings at a cheaper cost.
Additionally, it has different significance values including;
1.3.1 Educational significance
Nurseries also help to preserve and protect rare and endangered plant species by propagating and growing
them in a controlled environment. In addition, they can help to educate the public about the importance of
plants and the role they play in the environment.
1.3.2 Economical significance
Plant nursery has various economic significance including;
A Save country expenses;
Since our country Ethiopia uses plant seeds in large amounts every year the existence of the nursery
benefits the country as a whole by providing each plant seed at a low cost with a very desired amount at a
specific time
B. Additional income for the country
Plant nurseries develop more than just trees; they also grow fruits, flowers and vegetables that meet high
quality standards. This encourages a nation to plant fruit trees in all of its initiatives and allows its
products to be exported to other countries so that they can profit from global consumption.
C. Job creation
Particular training and treatment are required before propagules are transplanted in the main field. All of
these jobs can be effectively completed by competent workers in a nursery with regulated environments.
One of the ways our plant nursery creates jobs is by giving people over 80 opportunities to work in a
variety of fields.
Environmental
They contribute to the creation of healthy, resilient habitats that support a wide range of flora and
fauna.
Plant nurseries are facilities where plants are propagated and grown to a desired size 1. They play
an important role in environmental conservation and sustainability. Here are some of the
environmental benefits of plant nurseries:
Conservation of rare and endangered plant species: Plant nurseries can help to
preserve and protect rare and endangered plant species by propagating and growing them
in a controlled environment.
Reduction of carbon footprint: Plant nurseries can help to reduce the carbon footprint
by producing plants locally, which reduces the need for long-distance transportation
Production of disease-free plants: Plant nurseries can produce disease-free plants,
which reduces the spread of plant diseases in the environment
Increased biodiversity: Plant nurseries can help to increase biodiversity by producing a
wide variety of plant species, including native species that are important for ecosystem
health
Improved air quality: Plants grown in nurseries can help to improve air quality by
absorbing pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide
In conclusion, plant nurseries have several environmental benefits that make them an
important tool for environmental conservation and sustainability.

It is where plants are grown commercially, either for sale directly to the public or to other retailers. An
area where we grow and nurse young progeny (an offspring of a person, animal, or plant) of plants is
called a Nursery.
It is a well-designed site which produces healthy and quality seedlings that are developed and grown
under favorable conditions and these are maintained well until they are ready for planting in the elds.

Selection of Nursery Site
Selection a site for a large nursery is a very difficult task, requiring mature judgment and careful study,
especially in a mountainous region where all conditions favorable to nursery practice are seldom
encountered in the same area. The most important factors influencing the selection of a nursery site are:
1. Species of stock to be raised.
2. Soil.
3. Water supply.
4. Slope, aspect, and environment.
5. Adequate labor supply.
6. Readily accessible to main highways, railroads, and electric power.
Component of plant nursery
Following are some of the components of a plant nursery
1. Shed/building structure
It includes the office, the sales counter, the packing shed, the potting shed, the store, the
implement shed, and the residential quarters.
2. Progeny tree block
Choices of type and variety of fruit crops and the collection of true-to-type mother plants
significantly affect the success and goodwill of a plant nursery.
3. Propagation structures
The propagation of plants is accomplished with structures such as greenhouses, glass houses,
polyhouses, hotbeds, cold frames, lath houses, shade houses, and mist houses.
4. Seedbed
Seed beds are smaller areas (when compared to nursery beds) where the germination of seeds is
performed. These beds are usually raised and preferably near the office area so that these beds
and the germination of seeds can be closely monitored.
5. Nursery bed
The plant nursery bed is the plantation area (sometimes in level with the ground and sometimes
raised from the level of the ground) where the small saplings are grown. The small saplings are
taken from the seed bed. A typical dimension of a plant nursery bed is 3 meters in length x 1
meter in width. Furthermore, nursery beds are sectioned and each section has its own crop
variety.
6. Pot yard
Pot yard is generally used for tender and sensitive plants instead of hardy plants. It is usually
made in areas where there is ample shade.
7. Working yard and packing shed
This place is used by workers for sorting the saplings and also for packing saplings before the
sale.
