THE OIL EXPROPRIATION

The oil expropriation brought a boom to the country Mexico by being able to govern the entire oil

industry, this thanks to the correct execution of article 27 of the Mexican constitution. In this essay

we will talk about the most essential issues that intervened in this historical event that marked a

before and after in the Mexican economy and society: Mexico implemented laws to protect the

industry from foreigners, Mexicans implemented a union to protect themselves and the Mexicans

declared themselves owners of the oil industry.

The oil expropriation was the result of the implementation of the expropriation law of 1937 and

articicle 27 of the mexican constitution applied to oil companies on March 18th 1938, by the

president of the republic, General Lázaro Cárdenas del Rio. On March 18th 1938, at 10 pm on

national radio, General Cárdenas read the expropriation decree with which article 27 of the

constitution became valid, because it is about the ownership of the lands and waters included within

the limits of the national territory corresponds originally to the nation. The implementation of the

oil expropriation allowed oil workers to from a union.

In 1935, the union of petroleum workers of the mexican republic (STPRM) was created, with the

firm support of the federal government. Later in 1936 the STPRM climed economic claims, which

were rejected by the oil companies, among them; the fourty – hour work week, salary payment

during illness; family compensation in case of death or total disability, mínimum wage of five
pesos, retirement, among others. The creation of the union helped to expropriate foreign

companies.

The decree consisted of the legal expropriation of machinery, facilities, buildings refineries,

distribution stations, vessels, oil pipelines and all movable and immovable property. In the same

way, it was established that the Mexican state would have total control over the production and

commercialization of oil in national territory, that is, on land and at sea. This represented that the

government obtained more economic resources, with which public finances were strengthened, and

having good income, the economic activity of the country had a significant increase. The oil

expropriation brought a better economy for Mexicans. In my opinión, president Cárdenas made a

very important decisión to lift up his country.

On March 18, 1938, an important historical event took place for the country of Mexico, since

General Cardenas read the oil expropriation decree allowing Mexicans to create their own oil

company, thus removing foreign companies from Mexican territory. In my opinion, what General

Cardenas carried out was an excellent maneuver because he managed to give economic stability to

the Mexican country, protect its natural resources from foreign companies and generate sources of

employment for millions of Mexicans. placing the country in an excellent position worldwide.
