Fight for your flag

Made by: Renata

Lazaro Cardenas
One of the most important things he did was to nationalize
the oil industry

In the years prior to 1938, most of the large oil companies operating
in Mexico were owned by foreign companies. Foreign companies
also forced Mexican workers to work long weeks for low wages and
provided few or no benefits. In 1935, the Single Union of Oil
Workers was founded to pressure oil companies to improve workers'
rights. The union wanted every oil company to commit to improving
workers' wages and working conditions. The companies did not
want to sign. But after a national survey into the finances of oil
companies found they could pay workers more, a full-scale strike
broke out and the country came to a standstill .
When the investigation ended, the arbitration panel
said that the companies were making much more
profit than they had previously said. The report said
that the companies could afford to improve working
conditions and raise wages. However, they refused to
raise wages and instead decided to shut down several
oil wells in Mexico. On March 18, 1938, Cárdenas
declared that all mineral and oil reserves in Mexico
belonged to the "nation" of Mexico. Cárdenas ordered
the foreign oil company to withdraw immediately. Of
course, many countries, such as the United States,
Great Britain, and the Netherlands, were not happy to
lose control of Mexico's oil resources.
Regaining control of the oil industry is complicated.
Ownership of the company came under the control of
a new state oil company called Petróleos de México,
or PEMEX. In addition to nationalizing the oil
industry, Cárdenas also fought for better education. In
1938 he founded the National Polytechnic Institute to
train new engineers for work in the oil industry. The
PEMEX companies remain under state control
because of this.
