“Hey Jude”

"Hey Jude" by The Beatles is a timeless classic that dives into the complexities of love.

While its lyrics do have plenty of emotional resonance, the song brings to life both different

types of love and love languages. It invites listeners to reflect on the song’s many different

meanings. In "Hey Jude," the power of love is beautifully expressed through different forms like

words of affirmation and agape love, as the song offers encouragement and reassurance to Jude

during his challenging moments, highlighting the impact of heartfelt words in comfort and

strength.

The first noticeable love type is agape. It’s prominently displayed in many places,

especially in the first line that says, “Hey, Jude, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it

better.” As Paul reassures Jude that he's not alone and pledges to be there for him, the song

illustrates the type of love that is beyond any sort of circumstance. Interestingly enough, it could

also be pragma love. The encouragement of giving him a way to feel better is a practical solution

for him. Paul also shows agape love when he tells Jude to not “carry the world upon [his]

shoulder,” showing that even the weight of the world is not an obstacle for them because he will

be there regardless of the conditions.

Another recurring theme is philia love, evident in Paul's role as a friend offering advice.

Paul makes it obvious that he is friends with Jude, and the love shows through the different

advice he gives. When he says,” Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make
it better,” he truly sounds like a friend handing out advice in times of need. Jude would want to

hear something like this from a friend, and that is exactly what Paul is doing for him.

In examining Paul's work more closely, we find various love languages interwoven into

the song's lyrics. The song is enriched with words of affirmation and acts of service. Then when

Paul later says, “Anytime you feel the pain, hey, Jude, you're gonna be just fine,” he is giving

Jude a positive affirmation of support, reinforcing his love. A hidden form of acts of service is

when he sings to Jude going “Na, na-na-na,” possibly humming or chanting an uplifting song as

a service to him to show him he loves him. The song in its entirety is also an act of service, as

Jude can listen to it whenever he is down or feels lonely.

As the song transitions, Paul sounds happier, almost like he finally was able to help Jude.

After two minutes of the song go by, the song becomes cheerier, as if maybe Jude has started to

feel better. It could also be an acknowledgment of Jude’s sadness in the beginning, and then

changing to a cheerier tone to show that everything will be okay. It’s a very dramatic change, as

Paul’s tone is upbringing, and the song introduces more instruments as well as a faster tempo.

Jude is offered meaningful support in a plethora of ways that we can incorporate into our

own lives. The breakdown of these ways throughout the song helps us understand love better

when it is broken down piece by piece. Paul’s unconditional support through his writing and his

empathy and compassion are something we can all take a lesson from. The song reminds us of

the enduring nature of love, and how it should be presented to others unconditionally. He also

shows us that love is less than just about feelings, and more about how we can use those feelings

and offer it to the people who need it around us, especially in songs.

In conclusion, "Hey Jude" by The Beatles serves as a reminder of the nature of love and

its impact on our lives through different forms of love. Using its portrayal of unconditional
support and enduring commitment, the song deepens our understanding of what it might mean to

love. It enhances the importance of love languages with those around when providing comfort

and strength during life's challenges. "Hey Jude" remains an important piece in the Beatles’

history teaching us that love is a force that can heal through many different forms.
