LESSON PLAN in SCIENCE 5

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of using
appropriate measuring tools for measuring distance and express measurements
using correct standard units.

B. Performance Standards: The learner is able to apply knowledge of measuring

distance and appropriate tools used for varied distances covered to answer
mathematical problems and real-life situation.

C. Learning Competencies/Objectives: The learner uses appropriate measuring

tools and standard units in measuring distance. (S5FE-IIIb-2)

II. CONTENT
 Distance – It’s Appropriate Measuring Tools and Standard Units

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References
1. Curriculum Guide Page 71
2. Learners Materials Pages 112 - 115
3. Additional Materials from Learning Resource (LR) Portal
B. Other Learning Resources
- Computer Assisted Instructions, charts, realia, printed exercises, laptop,
speaker and projector
Value Focus: Time is valuable!

IV. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

A. Drill
Game Opener: “Fix the Picture Puzzle, Arrange the Scrambled Letters”
Pupils will be grouped according to their seating arrangements. Each
group will be given a dismantled images of measuring tools and scrambled
letters that represents the name of the picture. The first group that can arrange
the picture and letters well will win the game.

B. Review
Oral Activity: Are You in Motion: Yes or No?
Five pictures will be flashed on screen. Pupils who got a question mark (?)
note underneath their chair will determine whether the flashed picture is in
motion or not. Then, the pupils will explain why or why not the picture is in
motion.
C. Motivation
Ask the following questions:
 Who among you here walks from home to school and forth?
 How far is your home to school?
 Pupils will be given time to share the places they’ve been to and estimates the
distance and time they traveled.

 Present to the class the topic of the day and the lesson objective.
Topic of the day:
Appropriate Tools for Measuring Distance and Metric System of
Measurement

Lesson Objective:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils are able to determine the appropriate
tools and the correct standard units used for measuring distance (S5FE-IIIb-2)

IV. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

A. Presentation
Present real measuring tool/objects in the class. (Realia Strategy)
1. Ruler
2. Tape Measure
3. Meter stick

Ask the following questions:

 How are we going to use these tools?
 What are the uses of these measuring tools?

B. Teaching/Modelling
 Discuss and elaborate the top 4 common tools for measuring distance.
 Show and talk about the metric system and how to find the distance using
distance formula. Clarify the conversion of units as possible.

C. Guided Practice
1. Group Practice
a. Engage
 The pupils will be grouped according to their favorite means of transportation
(Plane, Ship, Train) and as a group, they will perform different activities.
Note: Changes may occur in case of uneven number of members happens.

Activity Title: Measure It!

Materials needed: Book, Ruler, Marble, Graphing Paper
Procedure:
1. Let pupils position the rulers together on a book with a distance from each
other that would fit a marble. The rulers would serve as a ramp for the marbles.
2. Ask them to release the marble between the rulers.
3. Then, have them measure in centimeters the distance covered by the marble.
4. Allow them to repeat steps 1 and 2 for trial 2.
5. Let them put another book on top of the first book. Then, repeat steps 1 to 3.
6. Have them put another book on top of the two books. Then, repeat steps 1 to
3.
7. Ask them to record their measurements in a table like on LM page 115.

 Ask the following questions for deepening of understanding:

1. What set up resulted in the shortest distance traveled by the marble? Why do
you think the marble traveled the shortest distance with this set up?
2. What set up resulted to the longest distance traveled by the marble? Why do
you think it traveled the farthest with this set up?
3. How can measuring distance help us in comparing things in motion?
4. What is the effect of height on the distance traveled by the marble from the
ramp?
5. What is the speed of the marbles in Trial 1 and Trial 2?
6. Graph your result on a line graph. Use graphing paper.

b. Explore
 Another group activity called “Dig It Up” will be given to the different group using
the measuring tools with standard units.

Activity Title: Dig It Up

Materials needed: notebook, pencil, measuring tools with standard units
Procedure:
1. Bring the class to the school grounds. They should bring with them their
notebooks, pencils, and measuring tools with standard units.
2. Each group should have a runner, recorder, timer and a measuring scout.
Note: The teacher will explain the mechanics of the activity and the task of each
member.
3. Have the runner of each group position in the starting line. Blow a whistle to
start the marathon. After 15 seconds, blow the whistle again to stop the runners.
Allow the measuring scout from each group to measure the distance of their
runner from the starting line to their current position. Let the assigned recorder to
write down the data of their group. Repeat the procedure for three trails.

c. Explain
 Have the group share the result by each other through a short sharing/meeting.
 Result of the activity must be written in a manila paper.
 Select 3 members to explain/report/elaborate their work in front of the class.
 Note: The teacher should select pupils who were not able to speak before the
class during the whole discussion.

2. Independent Practice
Individual Activity: Go the Distance!
General Directions: Match the following situations in column B to the appropriate
measuring tool to be used in column A. Then, choose the best standard unit of
measurement to be used in each situation.

V. CONCLUDING ACTIVITIES
A. Generalization
 Ask the learners to compare and contrast the different tools used in measuring
distance.
 Present the table.
Tools Description Specifically used in …
Ruler It is a straight edge with calibrated Measuring size of small
lines; and is usually 12 inches long. objects such as books, TV
screen, etc…
Tape Measure It is a flexible ruler; much longer Measuring cloth or plastic
than ruler. for tailoring and
dressmaking; also used in
measuring longer and
curved objects
Meter Sticks Longer than a ruler and calibrated in Measuring longer objects
centimeters, millimeters, and inches and distance in metric
for comparison. scale.
Measuring Wheel This construction measuring tool is Measuring long distance;
also known as surveyor’s wheel or building lot sizes,
distance calculation wheels. This perimeters of gardens,
fence and pavements.
device has a calibrated wheel
attached to the handle. All you have
to do is roll it from starting point to
the end point and read the numbers
on the counter to read the
measurement of the distance
traversed by the wheel. The
measuring wheel can measure
distance up to 10,000 feet.

B. Evaluation
Ask the pupils to do Let’s Check on page 126 on LM.

VI. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY

1. Ask the learners to work on Let’s Apply It on page 126 on LM.
2. Then, let them ponder on the questions below:
 How does technology help us in reaching distance places?
 Why is it important to have a standard unit of measurement in determining the
distance between two points?
