Assignment 04 Design of Helical Compression Spring

The document provides details on solving two problems regarding the design of helical compression springs subjected to static loads. For Problem 1, the spring is designed to have a maximum load of 1000 N and deflection of 25 mm, with a spring index of 5. Calculations are shown to determine the spring wire diameter as 6.401 mm, number of coils as 16, and free length as 131.17 mm. For Problem 2, a spring is designed with a maximum load of 1500 N and deflection of 20 mm, resulting in a wire diameter of 6.8 mm, number of coils as 18, and free length of 126.4 mm.

Assignment 04: Design of helical compression spring

subjected to static load

1
Problem 01: The design of helical compression spring of maximum load 1000 N for
deflection of 25 mm using the value having spring index of 5, the maximum
permissible shear stress for spring wire is 420 MPa and modulus of rigidity is 84
𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2 . Assume square and ground end and assume Wahl stress factor (K)

4𝐶𝐶 − 1 0.615
𝐾𝐾 = +
4𝐶𝐶 − 4 𝐶𝐶
Where, C= Spring index
SWG 1 2 3 4 5
Diameter 7.620 7.210 6.401 5.893 5.385
(mm)

Given:
W= 1000 N
C= 5
𝜏𝜏 = 420 𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 = 420 𝑁𝑁/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2
𝛿𝛿 = 25 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚
𝐺𝐺 = 84 × 103 𝑁𝑁/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2 2
Problem 01: (Continued…) We know that;
Wire end= Square and ground end

8𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊
𝜏𝜏 = 𝐾𝐾 ×
𝜋𝜋𝑑𝑑 2
Now;

4𝐶𝐶 − 1 0.615 4 × 5 − 1 0.615

𝐾𝐾 = + = + = 1.31
4𝐶𝐶 − 4 𝐶𝐶 4×5−4 5

1.31 × 8 × 1000 × 5
𝑑𝑑 2 =
420𝜋𝜋

𝑑𝑑 2 = 39.71

𝑑𝑑 = 6.3 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚

Now, from given data; 𝑑𝑑 = 6.401 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚

Problem 01: (Continued…)
𝐷𝐷
Now; C =
𝑑𝑑
D = C × 𝑑𝑑
D = 5 × 6.401 = 32
𝐷𝐷𝑜𝑜 = 𝐷𝐷 + 𝑑𝑑 = 32 + 6.401 = 38.401𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚

𝛿𝛿 = → 𝑛𝑛 = 3
=
𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺 8𝑊𝑊𝐶𝐶 8 × 1000 × 53

𝑛𝑛 = 13.44 ≈ 14
For square and ground end

𝑛𝑛 = 𝑛𝑛 + 2 = 14 + 2 = 16

Problem 01: (Continued…)

Free length of spring;

𝑙𝑙 = 𝑛𝑛′ 𝑑𝑑 + 𝛿𝛿 + 0.15𝛿𝛿

𝑙𝑙 = 16 × 6.401 + 25 + 0.15 × 25

𝑙𝑙 = 131.17 mm

Pitch of coil = ′
