COURSE OUTLINE

Course Name: Engineering Materials: II

Course Code: Meng 2122
Credit: 3 (2 hr. lecture + 3 hr. tutorial)
Year: 2016 Academic year 3, 1st semester

Course Objective
This course introduces the principles of phase transformation, and its common practical
application for selected metals is elucidated. Then the course presents different types of
engineering materials (metals, ceramics polymers, and composite). Their fabrication/synthesis,
processing and applications together with property enhancing methods will be introduced.
Finally the corrosion and degradation of materials and protection procedures are explained.

In the laboratory session, it’s mandatory for the students to performed different types of heat
treatment methods (softening, strengthening, and hardening). They are also required to study
the microstructures and related mechanical properties developed after each heat treatment
procedures.
