He received his early education from his mother and private tutors, attended the Ateneo Municipal de Manila and University of Santo Tomas, and earned various degrees including Licentiate in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters from the University of Santo Tomas and University of Madrid. He went on to study in Europe, specializing in ophthalmology at the University of Paris and University of Heidelberg. Rizal was a prolific writer and authored several novels and essays. He was a key member in various organizations and societies.
