DEFINITION
Patrol is an activity to keep watch over an area by regularly walking or travelling around it. It is one
of the core services provided by a security company to a client and one of the primary duties of a
security guard.
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF PATROLS
 Patrols are tactics employed by security guards and security companies in order to protect
client’s assets, personnel and information against loss theft or damage.
 Patrols help the security guards to survey the area, stay vigilant and alert and identify any
anomaly that could be a threat to the clients business and property.
 To maintain the security of the premises under the security guards jurisdiction.
 Discovering, detecting, and observing, interdicting and deterring crime in order to keep a
business and its property, staff and assets secure.
 Protection of private property belonging to staff and visitors.
 Learning about the client’s activities and any potential risks to security, health and safety.
 Maintenance of good order in the premises.
 Reporting and immediate action dealing with crimes of any nature within the premises.
 To deter intruders.
PURPOSE OF PATROLLING
 To identify anomalies before shift change.
 Detection and prevention of criminal activities.
 Detection, prevention and reporting of fire, hazardous waste and potential accidents.
 Provide pro-active security to avoid re-active investigations
TYPES OF PATROLS
1. Foot patrol-Done on foot
2. Mobile patrol-Done using a vehicle. Highly visible and good for deterrence.
3. Active patrol-Done from a stationary/static post.
4. Random patrol-similar to active but with no discernable patterns in routes and timings.
5. Direct patrol-focused on specific areas that are vulnerable to security breaches.
6. Video patrol-Done using drones or CCTV.
7. Observation post- Done from a tower from where the entire premises is visible

LETTER MEANING
P PATROL ROUTES-Minimum 2 different directions , different time and different pace
A ACCESS POINTS- Check all personnel and vehicle access points- are they locked?
T TROUBLE AREAS- Culverts, fence holes, tree branches, dark areas and intrusion points.
R ROUTINES- Learn who is around to assist you, when and where they patrol.
O ORDER OF HELP- WHAT MUST YOU DO-press alarm? Tell client? Inform supervisor?
L LIGHT &WHISTLE SIGNALS-Develop emergency signals with other guards.

WHEN TO PATROL
 Every 10-15 minutes
 Before taking over duties.
 When handing over duties
 Frequently while on duty.
 When instructed by the client.
 On investigation.
 Whenever you suspect criminal activity.
 When there is power blackout
 When the client is out.
 When you feel sleepy
 When you hear dogs barking.
 When it’s raining.
WHERE TO PATROL
 All entrances and access points.
 Possible intrusion points or trouble areas
 Along fence lines and perimeter boundaries.
 In all dark areas
 Static guard position.
 Within the compounds interior areas.
 Client indicated specific area.
 Any area that you suspect at any time.
HOW TO PATROL
 Avoid a regular predictable patrol pattern.
 Patrol at irregular time intervals.
 Use different patrol routes and directions.
 Patrol quietly, slowly and be thorough.
 Make use of shadows and dark areas.
 Stop, scan and listen frequently.
 Concentrate on the periphery.
 Always carry your baton, torch and whistle.
 Avoid coughing. Sneezing, smoking and grunting.
 Challenge any person you don’t recognize.
 Make a report at the end of your patrol.
 Never confront intruders when alone but raise the alarm/call for help.
REMEMBER: some incidents may be stage managed to DIVERT your attention as thieves strike at
another part of the site
OTHER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
 At NO time should you leave your post UNMANNED.
 Clear the gate area of any idlers or strangers.
 Supervise the activities of garbage collectors and meter readers.
 Do not divulge any client information to any third party without clearance from the client.
 Search all persons leaving the premises.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND CHECK
1. Check roof tops for any disturbance or entry.
2. Switch on/off security lights.
3. Be on the lookout Intruders or trespassers.
4. Any ladders left near perimeter wall.
5. Defective manhole covers.
6. Locks, doors and windows left open or tampered with.
7. Perimeter fence/walls for holes.
8. Materials stacked near the fence/wall
9. Vehicles-unlocked/locked/lights on.
10. Any machines left running unattended
11. Property that may be affected by the weather.
12. Possible intrusion points/trouble areas.
13. External areas-doors/windows locked.
14. Suspicious individuals/groups, vehicles or any activity.
15. Suspicious packages/boxes deliveries.
16. All flammable materials- properly stored
17. Any running taps, gas leakages, or unnecessary lights.
18. Check all exposed vulnerable valuable things.
19. Fire exits are free from obstruction
NOTE
In all cases make a note of your findings and report them to both the client and your supervisor for
immediate action.
