Iconic hairstyles
There have been many iconic hairstyles over the years, many of which have immediately been copied
by fans all over the world. Here are five of our favourites.
1 ___
In the early 1960s, most American and British teenage boys had rock ‘n’ roll haircuts similar to those
worn by Elvis Presley and the actor Tony Curtis. This was short on top with lots of hair gel. Then, in
1963, The Beatles became famous all over the world. They also had Elvis haircuts until they went to
Germany, where they met a group of German students who combed their hair forward into a fringe just
above the eyes. Guitarist George Harrison later joked that he discovered the hairstyle after going
swimming, but it was a young woman named Astrid Kirchherr who showed them the haircut. Within a
year, the rock ’n’ roll style was as old-fashioned as a pre-war ‘short back and sides’.
2 ___
Haircuts often become famous thanks to films, but one film became famous because of a haircut. In
1968, young actress Mia Farrow appeared in Rosemary’s Baby with a very short haircut known as a
‘pixie cut’. It soon became popular and still is today. To advertise the film, the studio published photos
of hairstylist Vidal Sassoon cutting Mia’s hair and these soon appeared in newspapers and
magazines. However, later Mia claimed that she gave herself the haircut six months before and that
the photos of Vidal just showed him cutting her already short hair a little bit shorter. The idea certainly
worked, though, and the film was a great success.

Dorothy Hamill was the 1976 Olympic Figure skating champion, but she was also famous for her
hairstyle. Just before she left for the Olympics, she asked a New York stylist to cut her hair short so
she would look good while skating and wouldn’t have to worry about keeping it looking tidy. The
haircut became known as the wedge. It is still popular today as it allows the hair to move freely during
exercise or in windy weather but, as if by magic, it always falls back into place and never looks messy.
4 ___
Many people associate dreadlocks with reggae music and, especially, the singer Bob Marley whose
image is still famous today, over 30 years after his death. However, not many people know that
dreadlocks existed all over the world in ancient civilisations. There is evidence that they were popular
in ancient Egypt and India and were often seen as a sign of strength. The Romans said that the Celts
of Europe ‘wore their hair like snakes’ and there are paintings in Crete which date from 3600 BC and
which show people with dreadlocks.
5 ___
Jennifer Aniston is a famous actress who became popular in the sit-com Friends, in which she starred
as the character Rachel Green. For the part, Jennifer was given a special haircut. It looked very
natural. The hair was wavy and came down to her shoulders. Jennifer now says she hated the haircut
because it actually took a lot of effort to keep it looking tidy and Jennifer had to spend a lot of time
having her hair restyled during breaks in recording. The haircut became very popular and, even today,
most hairdressers will still understand exactly what you want if you ask for one.
