JUJA SENIOR – INTERNATIONAL YEAR 8

Welcome to Year 8
The primary aim is to inform the Year10 students and parents about what the students will be
learning during the year course. We hope that you find it both a useful and informative guide which
helps you navigate through the year. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that all information
is accurate, there may be, on occasions, circumstances that dictate minor deviations from the
curriculum plans published here. We trust such deviations will be rare and if, for any reason, a major
deviation was required parents would be informed in writing.
Any feedback, both positive and suggestions for future improvement would be most welcome and
should be addressed to the class teacher, Ms. Phoebe Juma.

Expectations
The School code of conduct may be summarized in the following three simple rules, which form
the basis of our behavioural expectations of students both inside and outside the classroom • Act
with integrity – “do the right thing”
• Follow instructions
• Respect people and their property

The Year 8 Curriculum

All students take IGCSE’s in English Language, Mathematics, Swahili, General Science, Art and
Design, Information and Communication Technology, French, Literature, Global Perspective,
Music.
There are 9 forty minutes periods per day (8:00 am – 3:20 pm)

Lessons/Preps Attendance
All students both boarders and day scholars are expected to attend all learning sessions on time.
Lateness will be sanctioned by the teacher and persistent lateness will be sanctioned by a school
detention on Monday, Wednesday or Friday at 4:00 pm.
Prep for boarders is scheduled daily from 6:50 am – 7:30 am in the morning and 7:00 pm – 9:00
pm in the evening, except for Saturday evening.
We have guided activities on Saturday (8:00 am – 12:30 pm).

Catching up after absence

Any absence from school/lessons should be communicated to the class teacher a day before or
promptly in case of unforeseen absence.
If a student is away from school/lessons, he/she is expected to catch up with any class notes and
assignments. For any planned or unforeseen absence, the student should see each teacher on return
to find out what classwork/assignments has been missed and to collect any materials from the
lesson. Students should have caught up with any missed work within a week of their absence. For
extended absence, parents should contact their son/daughter’s class teacher who will provide help
in liaising with teachers and in finding out how best to catch up.

Page 3 of 25 JPSS©
JUJA SENIOR – INTERNATIONAL YEAR 8

Lesson Requirements
The following materials are expected in all lessons. Not having the correct requirement disturbs the
lesson and hinders learning.
 Small Notebook (for recording assignments)
 Exercise book
 Text book
 Black or blue pen
 HB Pencil
 Pencil sharpener, eraser and ruler
 Geometrical set
 Calculator

Formal Assessments
There are three formal assessment points in trimester 1& 2 and two in trimester 3:
Entrance Assessment – this will take place for all subjects in the second week after the start of
trimester 1 and 2 only. The assessment aim is to review the previous trimester’s work and tune the
learners mind back to school after a break. Tests will cover the work taught in the previous trimester;
therefore, students will be expected to spend some time during the holiday preparing for these tests.
Mid-trimester Assessment – this will take place before the mid of trimester break and will assess
work taught in the first part of trimester.
End of Trimester Assessment – this will take place before the end of each trimester and will
examine all work covered during the trimester.
NB: An assessment report is issued after each assessment exam.

Grading
All subjects will use A* - G grading system in the assessment reports as follows;

RANGE OF MARKS MEAN GRADE MEAN POINTS

85-100 A* 8
75-84 A 7
64-74 B 6

Holiday Work
Students should expect to do some project-based and/or consolidation learning during their
holidays. This provides the opportunity to prepare for the entrance assessment administered at the
beginning of trimester 1 and 2.

Who do I contact if I have an academic concern?

Whilst we hope that all students make good progress at the school, we do understand that from time
to time parents may have concerns about their son/daughter’s academic progress. Coordinator
should be copied into all correspondence with the school.
For a concern in a particular subject:
 In the first instance, contact the teacher directly.
 If the concern is not resolved following discussion with the subject teacher, please contact, in
the following order, the Class teacher or Dean of students.
For concerns in a number of subjects:
 In the first instance, please inform your son/daughter’s class teacher.
 If the concern is not resolved following discussion with the class teacher, please contact, in the
following order, the Dean of students or Coordinator.
