All storage systems have a particular component, including having a storage medium
and a storage device, portability, availability, volatility, and how data is accessed and
represented. The storage system has two parts: the storage medium and the storage
device. A storage medium is a storage system where data is saved or stored, like a
DVD, flash memory, etc. A storage device is a part of hardware like a DVD drive or USB
drive, in which the storage medium will the inserted to be read and written.
Data storage refers to magnetic, optical, or mechanical media that records and
preserves digital information for ongoing or future operations (IBM.com).
There are two types of storage devices with computers: a primary storage device, such
as RAM, and a secondary storage device, such as a hard drive. Secondary storage can
be removable, internal, or external. Without a storage device, a computer cannot save
or remember any settings or information and would be considered a dumb terminal
(ComputerHope, 2021).
Storage Device
o DVD drive, flash memory card reader, etc.
o It is usually identified by a letter.
Storage Media
o DVD, flash memory, etc.
o Media inserted in the device are used.
A storage device can be internal, external, or remote.
Storage device are nonvolatile.
Logical File Representation
o Users view of the way data is saved or stored.
o File: program, document, or image
They are stored on a storage medium.
Filename: name labeled to a file by the user.
Folder: a label that is placed on a storage medium in which files are stored.
Magnetic Disks
A storage instrument consists of one or more metal magnetic discs sealed permanently with
an access system inside its drive.
Use one or more meta; disks.
Data is saved or stored magnetically.
In Hard Disk Drives, disks were permanently sealed inside the hard drive to avoid
contamination and help the discs faster.
Optical Discs
Optical media like CDs and DVDs is saves or store data optically using laser beams.
Data will be permanently burned on the disc.
Rewritable optical media can be rewritten or changed and erased.
The standard size of this disc is 120mm, and the smaller disc size is 80mm, called minis.
CDs and DVDs use multiple layers and multiples side to increase capacity.
Standard CDs hold 650MB up to 700MB.
Standard DVDs hold 4.7GB for single-layer disc and 8.5GB for a double-layer disc.
Recordable Discs
These recordable discs can be written but cannot be reused again and erased data.
Most common formats:
o CD-R Discs: Recordable CD
o DVD-RW
Remote storage
o It uses a storage device that is not directly part of the PC.
o Example of Remote Storage
Network Storage
It can be accessed using a local network
Online Storage
It can be accessed using the internet.
Smart Card
o A Credit card is a plastic device with some computer circuit to be used as a storage
device.
o Can store up to 64KB files.
o A smart card is used to store amounts of digital cash or personal information.
A collection of hard disks and other storage devices that serves as storage for another
computer network.
