POVERTY

KEIRON: Good day to all my fellow Filipinos! We are here today to discuss our country’s one of the top priority
problems, which is POVERTY.

: Poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Its
manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social
discrimination and exclusion, and the lack of participation in decision-making.

: So, why is poverty a problem? It is absolutely a problem concerning the limited resources available a certain
environment of society has, that these subjects are struggling to obtain the simplest food, clothing, shelter, and
medicines.
Poverty can also limit access to educational and employment opportunities, which further contributes to income
inequality and perpetuates the cyclical effects of poverty, unmet social needs, environmental factors, and
barriers to accessing health care contribute to worse health outcomes for people with lower incomes.

: Now that I gave you all some ideas about what poverty is, the board members will now further continue the
discussion.

KHENDRA: Thank you Mr. Keiron, In terms of your statement regarding poverty, we have here some
explanation of some of the causes and effects of poverty all around our country, Philippines.

: It is evident that the poorest households are those who have larger family sizes. Consequently, these
households have to support more people with fewer resources, making the family live a life of inherited
poverty.

: In the matter of family planning with poverty taking a toll on Filipino families, parents often can't make enough
money to support their families; children then have to be taken out of school to work in harsh conditions.
Statistics show that around 3.6 million children, from ages 5-17, are child laborers in the Philippines.

: So in effect, where there's poverty, there's lack of education, joblessness, and poor health and even poor
agricultural matters.

: Now, Ms. Ciara will, in addition to the different causes and effects of poverty, explain her take on this topic.

KHENDRA: That’s specifically it, the causes and effects of poverty are very noticeable in the Philippines.
Various complications from the past government have various ideas to help eradicate or even lessen the state
of poverty. Now we will be going to introduce our program and its goal to help lessen poverty here in the
Philippines.

Program and Goal

Sustainable Livelihood Program

ELIZA: much appreciated Board Members. Poverty is a very constant problem worldwide. Even the richest
country suffered a great deal of the inadequate. Here in the Philippines, many are
With the country's vast agricultural resources, programs that focus on farming and agriculture can provide a
sustainable solution for poverty alleviation in rural areas. By improving the quality and quantity of farm outputs,
rural communities can increase their income and become self-sufficient. Furthermore, these programs allow
farmers to explore new markets beyond their local communities, leading to economic growth and development
in rural areas.

One of the main reasons why the Philippines needs sustainable livelihood programs is the continuous rise of
poverty in the country. About 16 percent of the total population, which equates to approximately 17 million
Filipinos, live below the poverty line, according to the National Economic and Development Authority. The
persistent poverty incidence has grave consequences, from lack of education and health care to malnutrition
and unemployment. Sustainable livelihood programs can provide long-term and practical solutions by offering
income-generating activities, such as agriculture, handicrafts making, and small-scale businesses, to
communities and individuals. These programs not only empower the poor by giving them the resources to
sustain their basic needs, but they also help them develop valuable skills and enhance their entrepreneurial
spirit, eventually leading to a more self-sufficient and resilient society.

In conclusion, building a sustainable future for all Filipinos requires a coordinated effort from various parties.
Sustainable livelihood programs are an integral part of this effort, as they provide opportunities for marginalized
communities to improve their economic situation and become more resilient in the face of environmental and
economic challenges. However, these programs must be implemented in a sustainable manner, taking into
account the unique needs and cultural context of each community. Furthermore, education and awareness
campaigns are necessary to promote sustainable practices and ensure that the benefits of these programs are
long-lasting. By prioritizing sustainability and inclusivity in our development efforts, we can create a future
where all Filipinos have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive
