GenMath 11 - Q1 - Module 3 Evaluating Functions

This document provides learning materials on evaluating functions. It begins with an introduction and objectives. It then provides examples of evaluating different types of functions by substituting values and performing the operations. This includes ordinary functions, piecewise functions, and representing real-life situations as functions. It concludes with an activity for students to practice evaluating functions in different scenarios and checking their work.

What’s In

REVIEW. In your junior high school years, you already evaluated

expressions by substituting the given value, usually with a
variable x.
Evaluate the following algebraic expressions, given that x = 3, y =
2, and z = -8
Algebraic
Expressions Solutions Answers
1. xy +z

2. 3 x y

3. 4x -2y – 5z
3 yz
4. x

5. 10z + 4xy – 12

Just like what you did in this recall, today our lesson is also
evaluating expression but more specifically, this time, it is
function. What is evaluating functions?

2
What’s New

LESSON PROPER. Evaluating function means replacing the

variable in the function in this case x, with a value from the
function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote that
we are evaluating f of a, we write f(a).
Example 1. If f ( x)=4 x 2−5 x +3 , find:
a. f (5) Steps to follow
2
f (5)=4 ( 5 ) −5(5)+3 Replace each x with 5
f (5) = 100 – 25 + 3 perform the operation indicated
f (5) = 78 write the final answer
Example 2. If f (x)=4 x 2−5 x +3 , find:

Example 3. If f ( x)=4 x 2−5 x +3 , find:
c. f (0) Steps to follow

0+ 0+3 perform the operation indicated
3 Simplify and write the final answer
Example 4. If f ( x)=4 x −5 x +3 , find:

Example 5. If f (x)=4 x 2−5 x +3 , find:
e. f (x+ 1) Steps to follow
2
f ( x +1 )=4 ( x +1 ) −5(x +1)+3 Replace each x with x + 1
f ( x +1 )=4 (x¿ ¿2+2 x +1)−5(x +1)+3 ¿ perform the operation indicated
2
f ( x +1 )=4 x +3 x – 3 Simplify and write the final answer
Evaluating Functions Through Real-Life Situations
A. Function. To evaluate functions, you must represent the real-
life situation first as we have done in the first 2 modules and
then try to evaluate using the given values. Meaning, finding the
value of the output f(x) = y, given the input x.
Example 6. The fee F for hiring a tourist guide is P400 for each
group of 5 persons in hiking to an Eco farm in Doňa Remedios
Trinidad, Bulacan. Represent the cost of hiring tourist guides as
a function of the number of tourists, solve for the cost of hiring
tourist guides for a group of 35 people.
Solution: F (1) = P400(1) because of the 1: 5 ratio of tour guide for
every 5 persons
Therefore, we need to divide 35 people by 5 and we get 7, this is
the number of tour guides to hire. Therefore,
F (7) = P400 (7) = P2,800 is the cost of hiring 7 guides for 35 people
B. Piecewise Function. The process of evaluating piecewise
functions is similar to evaluating ordinary functions, except for
the fact that we need to choose the piece or chunk of function to
be used for a given value of x. We can do this by examining the
appropriate interval where the input or the value of x belongs.

Example 7. Given the piecewise function below.

{ }
3
h ( x )= x + 2 x if x ≥ 6
x +10 if x< 6

4
Find: a. h (4) b. h (10) c. h (6)
Solution:
a. h (4) b. h (10) c. h (6)
4 belongs to x<6 so 10 is in the range 6 is in the range of
we need to use the of x ≥ 6 , use the x ≥ 6 , use the
formula formula x 3 +2 x and formula x 3 +2 x
x +10and evaluate evaluate
h (4) = 4 + 10 h (10) = (10)3 +2(10) h (6) = (6)3 +2(6)
h (4) = 14 h (10) = 1,000 + 20 h (6) = 216 + 12
h (10) = 1,020 h (6) = 228
