In order to increase the students learning in a classroom environment that is inclusive, the

two technologies known as assistive and adaptive technologies are very important as they

aid the learners with disabilities with regard to their cognitive issues or any other kind of

impairment. Generally, I believe that use of technology is an effective approach for many

learners however, with disability learners in a class, if the educator allows the students to

make use of their abilities to work towards their disabilities in anyway result in the success

of the students.

The importance of the two technologies mentioned above is well depicted in the practice of

schools first training their teachers to use the assistive and adaptive technologies in order to

address the learning barriers or difficulties faced by the learners. For example, students who

find it difficult to read comprehension or text can make use of Kidspiration as mentioned

by Wahl & Duffield (2005). Furthermore, use of electronic resources is also one of the

technological assistances that brings effective learning and creates inclusive environment.

With assistive and adaptive technologies used in class, one can easily provide opportunities

for the disabled students to build confidence in their learning process by working towards

their strengths and addressing the challenges accordingly.

One such example that I will give here is of the use of technologies I have witnessed in

Japan. Here in schools, the students who are visually impaired have assistive technologies

such as audio components that allow the students to hear the texts and assignments loud to

remove the barriers caused by visual impairment. Furthermore, these students have special
software that allows them to navigate through as the software has a motion sensor and

electronic compass that vibrates to allow the students to navigate towards their destination

(Health & Welfare, 2021).

When it comes to whether teachers are trained for using these technologies, I have two

opinions depending on the country I am talking about. In Japan, most of the teachers are

trained before being hired to tackle the diverse needs of learners effectively. However, in

countries like Pakistan, this is not the case. Educators are now adopting the approach of

being trained for diverse needs of the students but still they are not properly trained to

utilize the adaptive and assistive technology for students with diverse needs. In Japan also,

all teachers are not trained for the use of such technologies, and I have seen many teachers

struggling to accommodate the diverse needs of the learners. All in all, I strongly believe

that every teacher should be properly trained to make use of the assistive and adaptive

technology so that they utilize it in the classroom and make learning for all possible.
