Tutorial Sheet 3- Functions April, 2023.

1. For U = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}, A = {0, 4}, B = {2, 3}, find

(a) A × B (b) A0 × (A − B)

2. For A = {a, b, c, d, e}, B = {a, e, o, i, u}, C = {1, 2, 4, 8} find the following

(a) (A − B) × (B − A) (b) (A × C) ∩ (B × D)

3. A relation R is defined in Z+ by R = {(a, b)|a3 + b2 < 20}. List all elements of R, and
determine its range and domain.

4. Let A and B be two sets such that A = {2, 5, 7, 8, 10, 13} and B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}. Suppose
R is defined by R = {(x, y) : x = 4y − 3, x ∈ A, y ∈ B}.
(a) List the elements of the set R .
(b) Display the relation R on the arrow diagram.
(c) What type of relation is this?
(d) Find the domain, range and co-domain of R.

5. Find the inverse of the relation R = {(4, 8), (−3, −6), (7.1, 2.3)}.

6. In each of the following relations, illustrate the information given on an arrow diagram
and state which of these relations are functions.

(a) {(0, −1), (2, 2), (1, −2), (3, 0), (1, 1)} (d) {(1, 2), (1, 3), (2, 3)}
(b) {(1, 4), (3, 4), (7, 3)}
(c) {(4, 3), (4, 7), (3, 4)} (e) {(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 4)}

7. Prove that the following functions are one-to-one

8. If the function f is defined by



 −3x + 2 for x < 0,

15. Show that the following functions are inverses of each other.

C(x) = 70x + 800. The number of x units produced in t hours is given by x(t) = 20t. find
the cost of producing x units in 25 minutes.
