Angles

The document discusses angles, including their definition as formed by rotating a ray about its endpoint. It describes the parts of an angle as the vertex, initial side, and terminal side. Angles are named using vertex notation and can be positive or negative depending on the direction of rotation. Methods for measuring angles include degrees, minutes, seconds, and radians. Conversions between degree and radian measures are shown.

What is an angle?
How are angles formed?
An angle is formed by rotating
a ray about its endpoint.

ANGLE MEASURE

An angle is said to be positive if the ray rotates in a

counterclockwise direction, and the angle is
negative if it rotates in a clockwise direction.

ANGLE MEASURE
An angle is in standard position if it is drawn in the
xy-plane with its vertex at the origin and its initial side
on the positive x-axis.
ANGLE MEASURE
Identify the terminal side of the given angle in
standard position.

ANGLE MEASURE
To measure angles, we use degrees, minutes, seconds, and
radians.

Example:
1. 𝟏𝟎° 𝟑𝟎′ 𝟏𝟖′′ 4. 𝟏𝟐𝟓. 𝟑𝟐𝟕°
2. 𝟕𝟗. 𝟐𝟓𝟏°
3. 𝟐𝟑° 𝟒𝟓′ 𝟐𝟐′′
ANGLE MEASURE
A central angle of the unit circle that intercepts an arc of
the circle with length 1 unit is said to have a measure of one
radian, written 1 rad.
ANGLE MEASURE

Example:
1. Express 𝟕𝟓 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝟒𝟎 in radians.
° °
𝝅 𝟏𝟏𝝅
2. Express 𝐚𝐧𝐝 in degrees.

A. Convert the following degree measures to radian

measure. ° °
1. 𝟔𝟎 3. 𝟗𝟎
2. 𝟏𝟓𝟎 °

B. Convert the following radian measures to degree

measure. 𝝅 𝟑𝝅
4. 𝟓.

ANGLE MEASURE
C. Express the given angle in terms of degrees,
minutes and seconds.
6. 𝟐𝟔𝟕. 𝟔𝟐𝟏 °
