Lesson Topic: _American Civil War_ Grade level:_11th_

Length of lesson: _Five class periods_

Stage 1 – Desired Results

HS.H2.1

Content Standard(s): Explain multiple causes of conflict.

Understanding (s)/goals Essential Question(s):

Students will understand: What were the fundamental causes of the


Civil War?
The causes, events, and consequences of
the Civil War, promoting critical thinking What were the turning points in the war
and a comprehensive understanding of this and how did that affect the remaining
pivotal period in U.S. history. (Ex. duration of it?
Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg,
Union/confederates, division of territories,
etc.)

Student objectives (outcomes):

Students will be able to:

Gather evidence from resources available and construct a small project in which it shows
knowledgeable growth during that time period.

Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence

Stage 3 – Learning Plan


Pre-Assessment:

● The first two days will include a powerpoint lecture where the students will
actively participate with their preferred choice of note taking.
● Going over the United States in the mid-19th century, including regional
differences and tensions.
● Provide an overview of significant battles like Gettysburg and Antietam. Discuss
their impact on the outcome of the war.
● Start to go over assignment/project expectation
● Set the guidelines of the project and allow creative freedom within the project.
● Explain standards and discuss what is expected with individual/group projects.

Procedure

● Discuss different options in which the class can partake in small individual
projects(whether it being an essay, slideshow presentation, skit, diorama or
whatever original idea a student comes up with and is reviewed by me).

Example: Writing an essay about the Emancipation Proclamation and its impact on
enslaved individuals.

Materials

● Notes taken by the students.


● Access to reference books, websites, and databases for additional research.
● Visual aids from the time period.
● Papers, and any artistic items(colored markers, pens, etc.)
● Any additional resources needed for individual projects will be gathered from the
student.

Extensions & Enrichment:

● Facilitate a discussion about the causes and tensions that eventually led to the
Civil War.
● Students will have another two day opportunity in class to work on so-called
projects.
● On the 5th day students will orally present their projects/findings and the class
along with the teacher will ask additional questions about their
knowledge/findings.
● Students will be assessed based on class participation, their overall effort, and a
brief quiz covering key concepts and events from the Civil War.

Differentiated Instruction:

● Giving the students an opportunity for creative freedom with the small project,
having diverse options.

Accommodations:

● For a student with Autism: Allow them to pair up with another student and have
