DETAILED LESSON PLAN

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. describe the significance of the Food Guide Pyramid and RENI/RDA in determining calorie
content in food.

b. demonstrate the ability to calculate the calorie content in various food items using the
Food Guide Pyramid and RENI/RDA.

c. develop an appreciation for the significance of balanced nutrition and the importance of
making informed food choices.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

a. Topic: Understanding the Food Guide Pyramid and RENI/RDA in calculating calorie
content

b. Reference: DepEd Philippines K to 12 Curriculum Guide for Grade 12 Food Preparation

c. Materials: Food Guide Pyramid, RENI/RDA reference tables, food labels, calculator,
handouts

d. Method: Lecture, Discussion, Inquiry-Based Learning

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Preliminary Activities:

1. Drill:Identify the levels of the Food Guide Pyramid and briefly describe the food categories
found in each level.

2. Review: Recall and discuss one factor that influences dietary choices in menu planning.

B. Motivation:

Engage students by sharing a scenario and asking them to analyze how knowledge of the Food
Guide Pyramid or RENI/RDA would impact the person's food choices.
"Imagine someone with specific dietary needs. Discuss in pairs or small groups how
understanding the Food Guide Pyramid or RENI/RDA could guide their food choices."

C. Presentation:

Present the topic of Basic Tools in Nutrition, covering concepts such as Food Guides, Food
Pyramids, Dietary Guides, Food Exchange Lists, Nutrition Labels, Food Composition Tables, and
Philippine Dietary Recommendation Intake. Use visual aids and handouts for better
comprehension.

D. Discussion:

Facilitate a discussion on each tool, encouraging students to ask questions and share their
insights. Discuss the significance of each tool in promoting balanced nutrition and informed
food choices.

E. Generalization

a. How do Food Exchange Lists contribute to dietary planning?

b. Why are Nutrition Labels important in making informed food choices?

c. What role do Food Composition Tables play in understanding the nutritional content of

F. Application:

•Ask each group to create a short presentation highlighting the importance and application
of their assigned tool.

•Each group will present their findings to the class.

IV. EVALUATION:

Test I. Identification:
Provide a list of terms related to Basic Tools in Nutrition and ask students to identify and
briefly explain each term.

Test II. Essay

Discuss the significance of Basic Tools in Nutrition, including the Food Guide Pyramid,
RENI/RDA, Food Exchange Lists, Nutrition Labels, Food Composition Tables, and Philippine

balanced nutrition and informed food choices. Provide real-life examples to illustrate the

V. ASSIGNMENT:

Research and write a short essay on the role of Basic Tools in Nutrition in promoting overall health and
well-being. Also provide an examples and reflect on how these tools can positively impact individuals'
dietary choices.
