Construction of Trial Stretch and FDR base for Main Carriageway

(Reference: SBD, IRC SP-89 (Part-II) - 2018, IRC SP – 72- 2015, document issued by
NRIDA - MoRD, GoI for ‘Full depth reclamation for rehabilitation of low volume
roads”, May 2022 and Specification for Road and Bridges works, MoRTH)
1. Prerequisite for construction for Trial Stretch -

As per provision of Contract, Trial Stretch of 100 m to 300 m is to be constructed.

Before proceeding for execution Trial Stretch, the contractor has to ensure that-

1- A detailed joint survey of the road is conducted and final road level has been marked
on the drawing sheet and the Longitudinal Section and Cross sections of the road have
been prepared.

2- JMF design / designs of FDR work is / are received from the prescribed institutes or
NABL accredited Laboratories with all the statutory reports. The JMF duly uploaded and
approved by PIU on UTTAM FDR portal.

3- The required quantity of binder, water and additive is available at the work site.

4-The foundation of the FDR base in proposed trial stretch is prepared as per
specification and it's test report is duly compiled in the QCR and it is uploaded on
UTTAM FDR portal.

5- The required train of Machineries are available at the work site.

6- The mobile lab or a temporary lab, consisting of all the equipments required for
construction of trial stretch, is established within a reach of 250 m from any end of
proposed trial stretch length.

7- In case of requirement of dismantling of existing pavement and spreading of

pavement aggregate in 5.65 m, the spreading of the aggregate is completed and the
Sieve analysis of the aggregate, prior to the pulverization is recorded in the QCR.

8- Natural Moisture Content (NMC) is recorded and quantity of additional water for
mixing during pulverization is established and recorded on QCR.

9- Sufficient Safety Measures is deployed at the work site.

10- All required personnel of contractor, PIU and PMU are available at the work site.

11- Geo tagged photographs of the site is captured prior to start of pulverization.

12- If the additive is in the powder form and is proposed to spread with the cement by
the cement spreader, then get the additive mixed with the cement in correct proportion
prior to the loading in the cement spreader. Such additive should not be reactive with
the cement in the atmospheric exposure and if it is reactive then it should be spread by
using separate additive spreader.

13- - If the additive is in liquid form and it is to be mixed with the water in the tanker,
then mix the calculated dosage of the additive in the water tanker so that required
dosage of the additive is mixed in during pulverization. The calculation data of the mixed
additive is recorded in the QCR and also uploaded on UTTAM Portal.

2. Activities to be performed during construction for Trial Stretch -

During the pulverization, following activities is to be performed by the team of PIU,
PMU and Contractor, jointly-

1- Record the percentage of cement and additive spreading rate by normal tray test
method as per frequency given in the QCR and keep the record in QCR and upload on
UTTAM Portal.

2-

No trial stretch will be constructed without JMF prepared by institutions / organization-

IITs / NITs / CRRI or Additive Manufactures Laboratory (if facilitated with duly calibrated
all equipments required for testing & NABL accredited) as mentioned in the Contract. It
is mandatory that all technical parameter- UCS (7 days & 28 days), durability, residual
strength and flexural strength as mentioned in “IRC : SP : 89 (Part II) – 2018 :
“Guidelines for the design of stabilized pavements”, should satisfy the permissible limits
in JMF.

(Permissible Values: UCS – 4.5 - 7 MPa (7 / 28 days), Flexural Strength – Not less than
20% of 28 days UCS,
Residual Strength – Not less than 20% of 28 days UCS, Durability – Loss of material
not more than 14% after 12 cycle wet & dry.)

Job Mix Formula should contain following engineering parameter details:

a. Atterberg limits (LL and PI : IS 2720 Part - V) Permissible Limits LL < 45, PI < 20, Ph
value
b. Combined Gradation of Reclaimed Pavement Material (RPM)
c. Proctor Compaction Test (MDD and OMC : IS 2720 Part-VIII)
d. Unconfined Compressive Test (Cube Specimen of size 150 mm x 150mm x 150mm), 7
and 28 days in MPa
e. Durability Test (mass loss in % of 12 cycle wetting and drying :IRC:SP:89-2010 / ASTM
D 559 method 2)
f. Residual Strength (IRC:SP:89 (Part-II) - 2018)
g. Flexural Strength (IRC:SP:89 (Part-II) – 2018, Para – 4.2 and Annexure-II B / ASTM D
1635)
h. Construction methodology for FDR base

Executive Engineer PIU shall issue a letter to Contractor to Construct Trial Stretch as
per Job Mix Design with the consultation of PMU M/s Translink Infrastructure & Others,
if Job Mix Formula fulfils the engineering properties and engineering parameters / tests
as mentioned above.

2. Construction of Trial Stretch-

The Contractor shall demonstrate the materials, plant, equipment and method of
Construction that are proposed for FDR work, by the first constructing a trial length of
FDR, at least 100 - 300 meters along mechanized construction by using train of
equipments as mentioned in Contract. The width of trial section shall be full carriageway
width as shown in drawings / Contract. The trial length shall be constructed at a paving
rate which is proposed for the main work. Trial length should be constructed on main
carriageway of road.

3. Clearance for construction of main carriageway work –

At the age of 07 days and 28 days, Minimum of (9 cores+ 3 additional cores) with
diameter 150 mm shall be cut from the FDR base course when thickness of FDR base
is more than 300 mm and 100 mm be cut from the FDR base course when thickness of
FDR base is less than 300 mm. The cores shall be suitably cut at both ends to provide a
specimen of plane surface on both ends. The diameter to height ratio of core shall 1 to 2
or as per IRC Code provision. All samples must be properly waxed and sealed / rapped
and to be transported carefully with proper packing. Geotag photograph for collection of
samples is mandatory to be uploaded on UTTAM FDR Portal. Core Sample and Casted
Beam Sample (500mm x 100mm x 100mm) taken from trial length will be tested in
laboratory of IITs / NITs / CRRI for unconfined compressive Strength (UCS), Durability
Tests, Residual and Flexural Strength which will be done jointly by PIU, PMU and
Contractor under the letter head of Executive Engineer, PIU in which date of
Construction of FDR base, date of sampling and date of sample to be tested should be
mentioned.
After examination of UCS : 4.5 - 7 MPa (7 / 28 days), Flexural Strength – Not less than
20% of 28 days UCS, Residual Strength – Not less than 20 % of 28 days UCS,
Durability – Loss of material not more than 14 % after 12 cycle wet & dry of trial stretch,
Executive Engineer PIU shall issue a letter to Contractor to construct carriageway of
FDR base as per Job Mix Design with the consultation of PMU M/s Translink
Infrastructure & Others, if all above 04 parameters within the permissible limits.
