A General Requirements (SAIC-W-2037 - Insp of Socket & Seal welded Threaded Joints is used in conjunction with this checklist)

The thread joints shall be taper pipe thread (NPT) conforming to ASME
B1.20.1 unless otherwise required by specifications for specific
connections. Threaded connections for fire services are exempted and SAES-L-110,
A1 shall be in accordance with SAES-B-017. Para. 7.1
Refer to Attachment 1 & 2.
(NOTE: Threads are tapered (1:16) and cut at
60 degree angles.)
Site threading operations are monitored in process for code quality per
ASME B1.20.1 as follows:
A) Pipe ends are reamed clean after threading.
B) Oil and residual shavings are removed
from inside piping C) OD threads are chased and
Best Practice
A2 cleaned of debris and deburred. D) Starting threads
and runout threads are chamfered and rounded.
E) Threads are free of burrs, flat spots, chatter,
tears, cuts, etc)
F) Dies are in good condition and SAES-L-110,
produce smooth quality threads.

PTFE (Teflon) tapes are not used for service temperature greater than
A3 204°C on threaded connections. All threaded joint compounds shall be
specified & approved by Saudi Aramco prior to their service application.SAES-L-110,
Para.
B 7.5Practices)
Threaded Joint Requirements (Incorporate into Gap Control Procedure & Inspection

For sour service, socket-welded joints should be avoided. In case they

could not be avoided, the maximum size of socket-welded joints shall be
Para.
B1 1-inch.
5.2.2
Note: Socket welded joints should be avoided in any service where
crevice corrosion, severe erosion, or cyclic loading may occur.

SAES-L-110,
Socket weld joints are not permitted in location where high vibration can
B2
occur (such as high velocity gas control valves and reciprocating pumps).
Para. 5.2.3

The maximum size of socket-welded joints in hazardous services shall be SAES-L-110,

1½-inch for new construction. Maximum 2-inch may be used in hazardous
B3
service for maintenance, minor field modifications of existing piping
systems, and when necessary to match existing equipment connections. Para. 5.2.1

The axial gap between male and female component, as shown in Figure
SAES-L-110,
328.5.2C of ASME B31.3 code, shall be maximum of 3 mm and minimum
B4 of 1.5 mm. This gap is required prior to welding.
Note: Does not apply to piping already installed and welding was
Para. 5.2.4
completed successfully.

Threaded piping, nipples, swages, threadolets, etc, meet material

requirements of SAES-L-105, Section 9 and 10 (Hydrocarbon Service)
and Sections 11 (Utility Service):

A) Size limitations and rating schedules in piping specs match

line class requirements (Check Line Class Index Tables)

• CS Nipples are Sch 80 minimum unless piping (1.5” NPS and less) is in
SAES-L-105,
vibration service without bracing, then Sch 160 is required.
B5
B) Specific line class service conditions for Utility piping (Sect. 11):
Sect. 9
• Air and water non-corrosive utility services use threaded Sch 40
galvanized piping for 3" and less.
C) Locknuts, street elbows (one end with female threads and the other
end with male threads), street tees and reducing elbows are not
permitted. (SAES-L-105, Para. 5.5.2)

C Threaded Fitting Material Requirements & Limitations (Specifications are Checked)

Threaded and Socket Welding Fittings limitations (SHALL BE) as follows

(Spec Check):
A) For steel piping in hazardous services, threaded fittings are
SAES-L-110,
ASME B16.11 Class 3000, Class 6000 or higher.
B) Pipe unions in hazardous services shall be limited to Class 3000
threaded or socket welding forged steel unions per MSS SP-83.
C) Threaded
bushings with one size reduction are not be used. Only hex head steel
bushings are used
D) Welding bosses are forged carbon steel ASTM A105, ASTM A350 or
Para.
C1 alloy stelel ASTM A182 per SASD AE-036175 (Attachment 3). Note
11
hole/drilling reqmt.
E) Threadolets are Class 3000, 6000 or higher, as applicable, and abut
the pipe wall with a full penetration weld.
F) Malleable iron screwed fittings are ASME B16.3 Class 150 and are
galvanized and limited to non-hazardous services, except that pipe unions
shall be Class 300.
G) Pipe plugs for use in metallic piping are solid body, bar-stock, or
forged steel plugs per ASME B16.11. H)
Pipe unions shall not be installed in the pipe section between the main
pipe run and root valve.
SAES-L-110,

In hazardous services, maximum size of threaded connections shall be:

A) 1½-inch for standard fittings & valves
C2 B) 2-inch maximum for maintenance, minor field Para.
modifications of existing piping, matching threaded specialty devices SAES-L-110,
7.2
(scraper signals, corrosion monitoring access, etc).

In non-hazardous services, maximum size of threaded connections is, A)

3-inch for standard fittings and valves,
Para.
C3 B) 4-inch maximum on special items such as fire hydrants unless a larger
7.3
size is approved by the assigned Chairman, Piping Standards Committee
for the specific application.
SAES-L-110,

The engaged pipe threads is verified to have a minimum thread

engagement as follows:
Nom. Pipe Size Number of Threads Engaged
1/2" & 3/4" 6
1" through 1-1/2" 7 Para.
C4
2" through 3" 8 7.4
4" 10
(NOTE: Number of threads engaged is verified by counting the number of
exposed threads and subtracting it to the total number of threads on the
male component.-Also Refer to Attachment 1.)
