The Department of Civil Engineering of Sree Vidyanikethan Engineering College
organized the Inaugural of Indian Geotechnical Society Sree Vidyanikethan
Engineering College (IGS SVEC) Student Chapter and an Expert Lecture on “Best
Practices in Civil Engineering” for Civil Engineering students on 22nd December, 2018
from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The resource persons were eminent personalities from the Academia.

Dr. G. L. Sivakumar Babu, Professor, Geotechnical Engineering Division,
Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Governor,
Region 10 – ASCE; and President, Indian Geotechnical Society, New Delhi was the
Chief Guest and Guest Speaker. Dr. K. Nagendra Prasad, Professor, Civil Engineering;
Vice-Prinicpal, SVU College of Engineering, Tirupati; and Chairman, IGS Tirupati
Chapter, Dr. Neelima Satyam, Associate Professor, Geotechnical Engineering
Division, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Indore,
Indore and Dr. B. Janaki Ramaiah, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil
Engineering, IIT Tirupati, Tirupati were Guests of Honour.
Dr. P.C. Krishnamachary, Principal, SVEC presided over the function.

Mr. B. Ravisekhar, Director (Finance and Administrtaion), SVET; Dr. I. Sudarsan Kumar,
Director (Quality and Development), SVET; Dr. B. Mohan, Director, SVIM; Dr. O. Eswara
Reddy, Faculty Advisor, IGS SVEC Student Chapter, Professor and BOS Chairman,
Department of Civil Engineering; Dr. M. V. Subba Reddy, Assistant Professor and Head,
Dept. of Civil Engineering graced the occasion.
Dr. O. Eswara Reddy in his welcome address, reiterated the importance of student
chapters of professional bodies to act as platforms of inspiration. He emphasized the vision,
mission and objectives of IGS SVEC Student Chapter and suggested students to actively
participate in the chapter activities. He thanked the institution for giving support to start
this chapter.
Dr. P. C. Krishnamachary in his presidential address, emphasized the student

development through student chapters and congratulated the department for starting this
chapter.
Dr. M. V. Subba Reddy in his address, expressed his happiness in starting another
student chapter in addition to ASCE SVEC Student Chapter. He mentioned that it is another
milestone of the Department of Civil Engineering.
Dr. G. L. Sivakumar Babu in his inaugural address, explained about the activities of
IGS, New Delhi and benefits for the members of the student chapter. He reinforced the
importance and outcomes of active participation in IGS activities. He mentioned the value of
Geotechnical Engineering with real time problems and examples.
Dr. K. Nagendra Prasad in his address, appreciated the efforts of the department in
general and Dr. O. Eswara Reddy and his team in particular. He reiterated the importance of
communication in professional success. He explained how to develop communication skills
and felt student chapters would be one of the best platforms.
Dr. Neelima Satyam in her address, focused on the challenges and opportunities in
geotechnical engineering and how this forum will help in nurturing the required skills.
Dr. B. Janaki Ramaiah in his address, recalled his experience with the student
chapters. He said that discipline, commitment, hard work and communication skills are
necessary to achieve one’s goals.
Dr. I. Sudarshan Kumar in his address, thanked the Chief Guest and Guests of
Honour for sparing their valuable time and appreciated the department for this endeavor.
A total of 245 students and 20 faculty members from the host institution participated
in the inaugural ceremony and the subsequent Expert Lecture. Dr. O. Eswara Reddy,
Convener, Mrs. G. Gnana Prasanna, Coordinator, Other members of faculty and IGS SVEC
Student Chapter officers of Civil Engineering Department were the organizers of this
program.
On the whole, the event was proved successful. Expert Lecture is a way of enriching
our students with the latest developments in civil engineering by an eminent academician
within and beyond curriculum. Students got inspired by the speaker and got enriched with
knowledge on latest technologies used in the industry, industry needs, challenges, and
opportunities in the field of Civil Engineering in general and Geotechnical Engineering in
particular. In addition, a good interaction took place between the speaker and participants.
Further, the Civil Engineering Department had an opportunity to explore the possibilities of
collaboration with the speaker with respect to internships and research projects.
