    Photomicrograph I shows a blood smear of a healthy person containing red blood cells (cell X), white blood cells (cell Y), and platelets (cell Z). Photomicrograph II shows a blood smear of a person suffering from a disease where the relative number of white blood cells (cell Y) is much larger. The disease is caused by mutations in genes regulating cell division in bone marrow cells, causing abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth. Red blood cells have a biconcave disc shape providing a large surface area for gas exchange and are unable to synthesize proteins for repair due to lacking a nucleus.
