TIME AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT WORKSHEET 40 marks

1. i) Time is worth money. Explain the concept of time as a measure of economic worth. 3)

Time is one of the key inputs necessary to successfully complete a task. A person must use their
time wisely and efficiently. Therefore the person who is willing to give up their time is more likely
to achieve a worthwhile goal, and see the full value of their results. This way time can be
converted into value and even financial gain.

ii) Give 2 suggestions to help save time in work when performing a task. 2)

Two suggestions to help save time in work when performing a task are:

1. Planning. Plan the method you will use before starting a task. This will help to avoid
problems and allow the task to be performed efficiently.

2. Set clear goals. Knowing what you want to achieve, will help you to know if you are going
in the right direction.

2 i) Explain the meaning of the term “work simplification”. 2)

Work simplification is the idea of identifying the simplest, easiest and quickest method of working.
It is a way of managing time more skillfully.

ii) List 3 factors that affect work simplification. 3)

Three factors that affect work simplification are:

1. Type of task. A big task which can be separated into smaller tasks, can be analysed to see
if all of the small tasks are necessary or if some tasks can be merged together to make the
larger task easier.

2. Use of correct procedures. Before starting a task a check should be done to make sure
that all the necessary equipment and supplies will be available when needed. This will
make sure that there are no problems to slow down the completion of the task.

3. Time management. Having a plan before starting a big task can help to identify ways that
small tasks that make up the big task, can be combined or completed in the correct order.
This creates sequencing, which is important in work simplification and time management.
iii) List 4 strategies for using time efficiently in carrying out routine tasks. 4)

Four strategies for using time efficiently in carrying out routine tasks are:

1. Omit unnecessary tasks and actions

2. Know the task from beginning to end
3. Have a plan in order to avoid going over steps in your tasks
4. Use rhythmic motions when possible to save energy and time

iii) Describe TWO work simplification strategies used in the home. 3)

Two work simplifications strategies used in the home are:

1. Sequencing. Sequencing means organising tasks by putting them in order of first task to
last task, which must be done to complete an overall task. For example: The dough must
be prepared first when making pizza before adding the toppings, such as pepperoni and
cheese. The last task is placing the pizza in the oven for its final baking.

2. Principle of body mechanics. Keeping your body in good shape allows you to efficiently
use your energy when completing a task. For example: If you are painting a room in your
home it may require climbing a ladder and stretching to reach high areas. If you are out
of shape you will take longer since you will have to stop to rest more. Stretching may
cause injury and stop you from completing your task.

3 i) A young family has completed renovations to an old house that they recently purchased. They
are in the process of cleaning and decorating it before moving in, and need your assistance with the
project.
Prepare a plan of work for the family, which demonstrates the efficient use of time in cleaning and
decorating the living room. The following activities are carried out from 9.00 am and 12.00 noon.
* Cleaning the floors, walls, windows
* Decorating the walls with pictures
* Changing the cushion covers
* Dusting the furniture
* Arranging the furniture 4)

Time plan

9:00am-10:30am Cleaning the floors, walls, windows
10:30am-11:00am Decorating the walls with pictures
11:00am-11:25am Dusting the furniture
11:25am-11:45am Changing the cushion covers
11:45am-12 noon Arranging the furniture

4. i) Name two human resources and two non-human resources that may be used in refurbishing an
upholstered chair. 4)

Two human resources used in refurbishing an upholstered chair are: (1) Skill (2) Energy.
Two non-human resources used in refurbishing an upholstered chair are: (1) Material (2) Money

Two practical strategies for simplifying tasks at home include sequencing tasks and applying the principle of body mechanics. Sequencing involves organizing tasks in a logical order, such as preparing dough before adding toppings during pizza-making. This ensures tasks are completed efficiently without unnecessary steps. The principle of body mechanics involves maintaining physical fitness to perform tasks more efficiently and safely, reducing the need for frequent rests and avoiding injury, which affects task completion speed .

Recognizing time as a measure of economic worth highlights its scarcity and the need for intentional use. For personal productivity, this recognition implies prioritizing tasks that offer the highest value, thus transforming time into accomplishments and potential financial gain. Individuals become more discerning about activities they allocate time to, focusing on goal-setting and efficiency, ultimately enhancing their ability to achieve significant outcomes with available resources .

Simplifying work processes enhances efficiency by breaking down complex tasks into manageable parts, allowing for analysis and potential merging of steps to streamline the process. Employing correct procedures and ensuring resource availability further reduces delays. Sequencing and planning contribute by enabling tasks to be completed in a logical order, reducing unnecessary repetitions and optimizing resource use, such as time and equipment, to complete tasks more quickly and effectively .

Effective refurbishment of an upholstered chair requires a blend of human and non-human resources. Human resources such as skill and energy are essential for executing tasks like cutting and assembling materials. Non-human resources, including materials and money, provide the necessary physical inputs. The interplay involves skillfully using energy to efficiently process materials within budgetary constraints, ensuring a high-quality finish without undue waste or delays .

Jade could manage her schedule by creating a daily time plan to allocate specific periods for her activities. Organizing study materials and netball gear helps prevent last-minute scrambles. Clustering activities, such as studying while waiting for school activities, maximizes productivity. Regularly evaluating her schedule ensures adjustments are made to align with her goals, counteracting inefficiencies or stressors .

Work simplification is influenced by the type of task, the use of correct procedures, and effective time management. Tasks can be decomposed into sub-tasks and analyzed to eliminate redundancy. Correct procedures ensure resources are aligned with task requirements, preventing bottlenecks. Time management structures tasks logically, enabling efficient sequencing and resource allocation. These factors interrelate by creating a streamlined workflow that minimizes unnecessary actions and optimizes resource use for task completion .

Time is considered an economic asset because it is a finite resource that can be invested to achieve valuable outcomes. In a workplace context, applying the principle of time as an economic asset involves planning and goal setting. By planning methods before task execution, problems can be avoided, allowing tasks to be performed efficiently. Setting clear goals helps determine the right direction, facilitating the conversion of invested time into value and financial gain .

Poor time management can impact Jade psychologically by causing feelings of inadequacy and irritability when questioned about her activities . Physically, it may lead to fatigue and poor eating habits due to misaligned study, chore, and activity schedules . Socially, it could lead to missing out on social activities and losing friendships due to lack of time for relationships .

Evaluation is integral to effective time management as it involves assessing the success of planned activities against goals. By evaluating, individuals identify inefficiencies, opportunities for improvement, and potential changes to their time plans. This feedback loop ensures activities remain aligned with overarching goals, adapt to changing circumstances, and encourage informed decisions, leading to continuous enhancement of time utilization strategies .

A family can efficiently manage daily activities by planning and assigning tasks based on time availability and member strengths. For instance, waking up and planning the day's routine facilitates task order, reducing indecisiveness. Implementing tasks sequentially, such as preparing breakfast and then commuting, ensures a natural flow, while evaluating the day's activities identifies improvement areas. Delegating tasks also helps distribute responsibility and maintain balance .
