Statement with be (verb to be)

 Usage
We use Verb to be (am, is, are) to talk about names, ages, feeling, nationalities,

situation, and professions. ពួកយើងប្រើវាដើម្បីនិយាយឬចង់ដឹងពីឈ្មោះ,អាយុ,អារម្មណ៍,សញ្ញា តិ, និង

វិជ្ជា ជីវៈផងដែរ
Example: I am a student. (Profession)
Her name is Pisey (Name)
He is 25-year-old (Age)
She is very happy today (Feeling)
They are from Cambodia (Nationality)
 Form
There are three form in verb to be

Positive Negative Question

I am + object (can be noun or I am + not + object Am I + object?


adjective)

He/she/it is + object (can be He/she/it is + not + object Is he/she/it + object?


noun or adjective)

You/we/they are + object You/we/they are + not + Are + you/we/they + object?


(can be noun or adjective) object
Example:
1. I am a shop assistant. ខ្ញុំគឺជាជំនួយការហាង

You are not a good friend! អ្នកមិនមែនជាមិត្តល្អទេ

He is not my wife's brother. គាត់មិនមែនជាបងប្អូនប្រពន្ធខ្ញុំទេ

We are very busy at the moment. ពួកយើងរវល់ណាស់

Is she a good friend? តើនាងជាមិត្តល្អទេ?

Are you happy? តើអ្នកសប្បាយទេ

Are you good at Math? តើអ្នកពូកែខាងមុខវិជ្ជា គណិតទេ?

 Contractions

I am  I’m He is  He’s She is  She’s It is  It’s

You are  you’re they are  they’re we are  we’re

He is not  He isn’t She is not  She isn’t It is not  It isn’t

You are not  you aren’t they are not  they aren’t we are not  we aren’t

Example:
She isn’t a doctor.
They aren’t musicians.

 Verb to be with WH question


What, where, who, when, why, how.
 We can use WH question with verb to be by put it before verb to be (am, is, are)
in the question form.
Example:

When were you born? (Time in the past)

What is your favorite drink? (Thing)

How are you? (Situation)

Who is her? (People)

Where are you? (Place)

Why are you here? (Reason)

 Short answers
Yes, I am / No, I am not or No, I’m not
Yes, he/she/it is / No, he/she/it not or No, he/she/it isn’t
Yes, you/we/they are / No, you/we/they are not or No, you/we/they aren’t

 Possessive Adjective
 Use to identify who has ownership to something or someone.
Example:
My laptop
Your book
His girlfriend
Her son
 Here are all of the possessive adjective
