1) under what condition can an object in motion be considered a point object?

Answer: An object can be considered a point object if during motion in a given time it
covers a distance much greater than its own size.
2) A) what does the speedometer of a car measure: average speed or instantaneous speed?
Ans: Instantaneous Speed
b) A bullet fired vertically upwards falls at the same place after some time. What is the
displacement of the bullet?
Ans: Displacement is zero.
3) A car travels along a straight line for the first half time with speed 50kmph and the next half
time with speed 60kmph.Find the average speed of the car
Answer: D1=50*t/2, D2=60*t/2
Avg. Speed= total distance/total time
= 25t+30t/t
= 55kmph

4) A particle is moving in a circular path of radius r. Its displacement after moving through half the circle
would be?What is its distance when it covers half the circle?
Answer: 2r, pi*r
5) if the instantaneous velocity of a particle is zero,will its instantaneous acceleration be
necessarily zero
Answer: A ball thrown upwards will have zero instantaneous velocity at its highest point but the
instantaneous acceleration is not zero.
6) Distinguish between instantaneous velocity and Average velocity
Ans: Avg. Velocity:
*Average Velocity is the ratio of displacement to the time taken for that displacement to
occur.

*It is a vector quantity.

*SI unit is m/s

*Calculated by dividing the change in displacement and time

Instantaneous Velocity:

*Instantaneous velocity is defined as velocity or displacement at an instant of time.

*It is a vector quantity

*SI unit is m/s

*Calculated by dividing change in displacement and time at a particular point of time

7) What are the characteristics of displacement?

Answer: 1) It is a vector quantitiy, so it has magnitude and direction.

2) It can be poistive or negative depending on its direction.

3) If you started and ended at the same point, then the displacement is Zero.
4) It can be equal or less than the distance, but never greater than the distance.

7) A car moving along a straight highway with a speed of 72kmph is brought to a stop within
distance of 100m. What is the retardation of the car and how long does it take for the car to
stop?
Answer: v=0,u=72*5/18,x=100.
V^2-u^2=2ax
0^2-20^2=2*a*100
-400=200a
A=-2m/s
Time:
v-u/a=t
0-20/-2=t
T=10seconds
8) A stone is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 4.9 m/s. Calculate a) the maximum height
reached. b) the time taken to reach the maximum height. c) the time taken to reach the ground.
Answer: a)Maximum Height reached,
V=0,u=4.9,a=9.8
V^2-u^2=2ax
0^2-4.9^2=2*9.8*x
X=1.225m
b) Time taken to reach maximum height:
v=u+at
v-u/a=t
0-4.9/9.8=0.5seconds
c)Time to reach the ground:
v=u+at
v-u/a=t
0-4.9/9.8=t
T=0.5seconds
9) A ball rolls down an inclined track 2m long in 4s. Find (1) acceleration (2) time taken to cover the
second meter of the track and (3) speed of the ball at the bottom of the track .
Answer:

Distance=2m

Time=4sec

Initial velocity (u)=O

(1) to find acceleration

S=ut+1/2at^2
2=0*4+1/2*a*4^2

2=0+1/2*a*16

2=0+8a

2=8a

a=0.25m/s^2

(2)to find time taken to cover the second meter of the track ..

=Time taken to cover first one meter of the track is given by

S=ut+1/2at^2

1=0+1/2*0.25*t^2

t^2=8

t=2√2

t=2*1.414

t=2.828

t=2.83s

Hence time taken to cover the second meter=4-2.83 =1.17s

(3)speed of the ball at the bottom of the track

v=u+at

v=0+0.25*4

v=1m/s

10) Distinguish between speed and velocity

Answer:

Speed-
Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance in a particular time.
It is a scalar quantity.
Formula:- speed=Distance/time
Speed depends upon the distance traveled.
Velocity-
Velocity is the displacement traveled by a body per unit time.
It is a vector quantity.
Formula:- velocity=Displacement/time
Velocity depends upon the displacement traveled by a body.
Velocity can be 0.
