INTRODUCTION

Dear Client,

The Centrifugal Mono-disc Spreader, model Tornado 600MD, was

developed to distribute through a casting process, fertilizers, corrective agents
and seeds in general, with uniformity and precision.
The distribution is done by a single disc, with 4 adjustable vanes, which
allows for different densities, granularity and work rows.
The Tornado 600MD is hooked-up to a tractor on the three point hydraulic
system, with pins of categories I and II, and activated by the PTO.
Using certain accessories, it is possible to row-spread and even apply
powdered products.
To use the equipment properly, it is important that this instruction manual is
read attentively, and keep it in pristine conditions for future usage and
consultations, should there arise questions and doubts.
STARA makes available to you exclusive call-ins to the After-Sales
Department, to better assist you and your dealer, so that you will optimize the
usage of your equipment.

4 - SAFETY MEASURES

The Tornado 600MD is a simple implement which does not pose high risks
to the operator, still it is important to observe certain safety measures, such as:
a) When hitching the implement, remember to place the locking pins on the 3-
point hitches;
b) Confirm the drive-shaft length before hooking it up (see item “Mounting the
drive-shaft” page 11);
c) Only hookup the PTO when the tractor is turned off;
d) Do not stand near the drive-shaft while it is in motion ;
e) Never turn off the engine with the PTO turned on;
f) Avoid allowing joy-riders or hitch-hikers on-board while the operator is
working;
g) Check your surroundings before maneuvering the tractor or the implement,
to avoid injury to personnel, animals or obstacles;
h) Do not turn-off the PTO with the slide-gate open;
i) Do not turn-on the PTO with the implement stationary;
j) Do not allow personnel to remain in the area of the product distribution;
k) Remain alert, making sure that there are no foreign objects mixed-in with the
product to be distributed.
10

5 -TORNADO 600MD ASSEMBLY

To lessen the implement’s transportation volume, the reservoir and the

portal opening lever leave the factory disassembled from the chassis, and will be
mounted in the field. The reservoir is mounted to the chassis using 3 reinforced
plates, which can be easily removed for cleaning.
To proceed with the assembly, mount the 3 plates to the reservoir using 14
screws onto the pre-existing drilled holes(Figure 03), make sure that the screw
heads are inside the reservoir.

Figure 03
11

6 - HOOK-UP, ADJUSTMENTS AND PROCEDURES

ATTENTION! Before hooking-up and operating the implement follow these

procedures :
- Verify that the inside of the reservoir is clean of all foreign objects. Remove it,
should you find any foreign objects.
- Remove the transmission main oil plug and replace it with a breather, as
shown (Figure 04).
- To check the gear box oil level, place the implement on a level surface and
remove the rear end plug (Figure 04).

Replace the Main Oil Plug

with a Breather.

6.1 - Hooking-up the Implement to the Tractor

The Tornado 600MD, in principal, can mount on any tractor possessing a

hydraulic lift.
To hook-up the spreader to the tractor, follow these steps:
1st) Dis-arm the tractor traction bar and move it to the side, or remove it
completely, leaving room for the drive-shaft.
2nd) Hook-up the implement onto to the 3-points of the tractor hydraulic
system. The mounting pins of the Tornado 600MD where made for two types of
categories I and II (Figure 05).
ATTENTION! It is important that the arms of the 3rd point and of the two
side braces (Figure 06), should be adjusted with the maximum slackness of 5 cm,
so that these items will not interfere with the tractor’s tires.
3rd) Level the implement in relation to the terrain. Checking all sides so that the
implement is leveled (Figures 07 and 08), also verify that the distance of the disc to
the ground should be 75 cm (Figure 08).

6.2 - Drive-Shaft Mounting

Raise the implement until the drive-shaft reaches the same height of the
tractor’s PTO (Figure 08).
Place half of the drive-shaft on the side of the implement, and the other half
of the PTO, placing them side-by-side, to adjust their length.
If the drive-shaft is too long, cut the tube to the same length (Figure 09).
The two tubes (male and female), should have the minimum gap of 25mm
on either side (Figure 09).
Avoid over-cutting the tubes, thus maintaining an area of engagement
between the male and female, in case of maximum drive-shaft span, or be it, when
the implement is elevated to major heights.
Remove dirt and grease of the thinner tube’s external side.
ATENTION! The drive-shaft angle should never exceed 30o, when in the
working position (Figure 10).

6.3 - Adjustments and Procedures

The Tornado 600 MD has four types of adjustments, which are:

- Rates (according to distribution tables and item 6.3.1);
- Distribution Placement (item 6.3.2);
- Vanes (item 6.3.3);
- Overlapping between runs (item 6.3.4).

6.3.1 - Rate Adjustment

The Tornado 600MD has a lever which allows the operator to run or interrupt
a job application.
The lever has as its function, the means to open or close the product
distribution slide-gate using the feeder plate (Figure 12).
The lever is limited in its travel by a stop. The slide-gate opening is measured
by a scale, numbered from “0” to “11” (Figure 11).

Scale

Lever
Stop

Figure 11

With the stop placed on 0 (zero), the slide-gate should be totally closed, and
in 11(eleven), totally open. If this is not happening, reposition the rod which is
connected to the feeder plate and adjust its length, accordingly.
In this manual, rates for each type of product are listed, along with the
scaled openings and the corresponding rates in kg/ha.

6.3.2 - Product Placement Adjustment

According with the different rates and product physical characteristics, it will
be necessary to make product placement changes on the disc. If it is found that the
product distribution is not symmetrical with the tractor’s travel line, then it will be
necessary to make a product placement adjustment. To do so, follow steps 1, 2, 3
and 4, as shown on the following page.
15

1- Remove the feeder plate locking pin(Figure 12);

2- Turn the racquet adjustment screw (Figure 12);
3- If the distribution is greater to the left, spin the racquet to the right, if the
distribution is greater to the right, spin the racquet to the left, doing it in such a way
that the fanning-out of the product is centered with the tractor’s travel line
(Figure12);
4- Re-install the locking pin of the adjustment rod onto the feeder plate and
on the corresponding hole, position the adjustment screw onto the arch.
Example: The adjustment screw of the racquet is on the arch’s 4th
position, the locking pin of the adjustment rod should be in hole 4 of the feeder
plate (Figure 12).
Consult the rate tables (Item 7), which show the distribution placement for
the different products, and their application rates.

6.3.3-Vane Adjustment

On the distribution disc VANE

there are 4 mounted vanes, POSITIONS
which have 3 adjustable 1 2

(fig.13)
For the best vane positions
for each product, check the rate
tables.

ATTENTION! When the product application width is too large, the operator
can have visual difficulties during the runs. In this case, it is recommended that
marking be done with steaks, to assist in guiding the operator and thus
guaranteeing an uniform application.
17

6.3.5 - Procedure for the final coverages

When applying the final passes, or be it, applying the product on the
extremities/edges of the working area, the Tornado 600MD has an adjustment
resource which goes as follows:
1st) Turn the adjustment screw of the flow positioning disc to a side
orientation, either right or left side, depending on the situation (item 6.3.2);
2nd) Reduce the distribution rate to about 50% (Figure 15).

18

6.3.6 - Procedure to Confirm Distribution Rates

The granularity and specific weight of the fertilizers and seeds do not
always match the products listed on the rate charts. Thus, after making
adjustments according to the charts, it is necessary to confirm in practice if the
rates are correct. To evaluate and adjust the rates, use the following formula to
determine the distance traveled with the tractor in meters until a known quantity of
product is consumed:

kg of product in reservoir x 10,000

Distance traveled (m) =
kg/ha of product to be applied x work width

Example: Desire to apply 100 kg/ha of urea in a predetermined area.

Consulting the chart VI (page 17), we find:

- Product: urea
- Quantity to be applied: 100 kg/ha (97 kg/ha shown on the chart)
- Working speed: 11 km/h
- Working width: 12m
- Product placement: 9 hole
- PTO rpms: 540 rpm
- Vane placement: 3rd hole
- Scale opening: 2.5

- Placing the lever stop on the 2.5 opening position, as suggested on table VI.
- We placed one sack of urea (50kg) into the reservoir.

Applying the formula we find:

kg of product in reservoir x 10,000
Dist.traveled( m) =
kg/ha of product to be applied x working width

50 x 10.000
Run dist. (m) = = Run dist. (m) = 416.7 m
100 x 12

After completing the 416.7m application run, with the product and the
tractor at speeds at 11km/h, the reservoir should run out of product. If this does
not occur, adjust the stop on the operational lever(Figure 12) opening or closing
the gap, depending on the case, and re-do the test until reaching the desired rate.
19

7 - PRODUCT APPLICATION TABLES

The following tables take into consideration the following variables:

-Tractor speed (km/h);
- Distribution work width (m);
- Disc placement position;
- Vane positioning (1st, 2nd or 3rd location);
- Scale stop positioning (slide-gate opening);
- Rate values in kg/ha.
It is important to remember that the PTO rotation, tractor speed, working
width, granularity and specific weight of the product interfere with the product
distribution rate.
NOTE: If the cross-distribution profile is not symmetrical or uniform, in
relationship to the tractor’s travel, make an adjustment to the product placement
(review item 6.3.2).

8 - ACCESSORIES (USE and ADJUSTMENTS)

The Tornado 600 MD has some accessories available, which will be

necessary in certain working situations.

8.1 - Conductors used in row distribution (Deflectors)

This device allows product ejection in rows. It has two side deflectors, with
adjustable deflectors, which allow the product to be distributed in two rows, one for
each side in relationship to the tractor travel, with distance adjustments which vary
from 2 to 8 meter between each other.

Left Conductor

Deflector

Deflector Right Conductor

Figure 16
For the distribution to be equal on both sides, it is necessary to adjust the
product placement point (see item 6.3.2).
When row distributing granular products, you can use a basic standard
adjustment, which is:
-Placement point: hole nº 4;
- Vane Position: 3rd hole.

NOTE! The distance between rows depends on the following factors:

- The tractor PTO rpms;
- Scale opening (rate in kg/min);
- Deflector positioning(Figure 16);
- Specific weight and granularity of product to be applied.
27

8.1.1 - Adjusting the Tornado 600MD to fertilize 2 rows

Example:
The goal is to distribute 50 grams of granular fertilizer per coffee tree:
- The coffee was planted with a spacing of 4 meters between rows and 1.5
meters between plants;
- If the tractor works at 6km/h = 6000 meters in 60 minutes = 100 meters per
minute;
- After every 100 meters traveled, 66 plants will be fertilized on either side,
or be it, 132 plants total;
- We want to place 50 grams per plant, thus, in 1 minute the result should be:

132 plants 50 grams

x = 6,600 g = 6.6 kg/min
min. plant
With the conductor device for row distribution already attached on the
Tornado 600MD, ajust the lever stop to a position which will correspond to 6.6
kg/min. Next, verify this rate following these procedures:
- Operate the implement with atleast 30 kgs of fertilizer in the reservoir;
- Using sacks, collect the product ejected in 1 minute, on both exits;
- Use this opportunity to check if both sides are ejecting the same quantities;
- Weigh the total amount of product collected. It should weigh 6.6 kg.
Should the product quantity collected be different from the 6.6 kg, adjust the
lever stop for more or less according to your situation, and test again.

8.2 - Larger Agitator (Christmas Tree)

The larger agitator accessory is used solely on powdered products.

Example: dry limestone, organic fertilizers and humid urea.
The function of this device is to maintain the product in the reservoir loose,
so that the flow rates remain constant and uniform during the job.
The components used on the agitator, are mounted according to Figure 17.

10 - MAINTENANCE

The Tornado 600MD requires a certain level of care: adequate

maintenance, appropriate adjustments and proper storage after the job. These are
factors which will contribute to the durability of the implement and its proper
functioning.
31

10.1 - Daily Maintenance

The daily maintenance of the higher usage mechanisms, which are used
during the distribution, are indispensable, primarily those who transmit
movements and are directly exposed to the environment.
Thus, regarding the drive-shaft, the u-joints should be greased, using the
grease fittings, and if there is need, refill the grease tube.

10.2 - Periodic Maintenance

Periodic maintenance should be done on mechanisms which, although

transmitting movement and suffer higher demands, are usually better protected
from the environment.
The transmission box oil should be changed after the first 30 working hours;
thereafter, at every 1000 hours, being that the reservoir holds 0.4 liters.
With the Tornado 600MD leveled, the oil level should be check often, and
refilled when necessary.

10.3 - Lubrication

10.3.1 - Recommended Lubricants

The Tornado 600MD transmission box oil, has specific characteristics,

which can support its working conditions.
Recommend using good quality lubricant oil, SAE 90.
