1. A refrigerator converts 200g of water at 40oC to ice at -10oC in 30 minutes.

Calculate the average rate of heat extraction in terms of watts.

Given: Specific heat capacity of ice = 2.1 Jg-1oC-1 , Specific heat capacity of water
= 4.2 Jg-1oC-1 ,
Specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 336 Jg-1

2. A copper vessel of mass 100g contains 150g of water at 50 C.How much ice is
needed to cool it to 50oC?
Given: Specific heat capacity of copper = 0.4 Jg-1oC-1 , Specific heat capacity of
water = 4.2 Jg-1oC-1 ,
Specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 336 Jg-1
[3]

3. A piece of brass of mass 200g at 100oC is placed in 400g of turpentine oil,

contained in a copper calorimeter of mass 50g at 15 oC. The final temperature
recorded is 23oC. Find the specific heat capacity of turpentine oil. { Specific heat
capacity of brass = 370 Jkg-1K-1 , specific heat capacity of copper = 390 Jkg-1K-1 }
[4]

4. 3.75 x 105 calories of heat is given out by 5 kg of water at 100oC. Calculate the
final temperature of cooled water. Specific heat capacity of water is
1000 cal kg-1 oC-1

[2]
5. An atomic nucleus A is composed of 82 protons and 126 neutrons. The nucleus
A emits an alpha particle and is transformed into a nucleus B. [4]

(i) What is the composition of B?

(ii) The nucleus B emits a beta particle and is transformed into a nucleus C.
What is the composition of C
(iii) What is mass number of the nucleus A?
(iv) Does the composition of C change if it emits gamma radiations?
6)A radioactive element P has mass number 235 and atomic number 90 .It emits
one alpha particle and 2 beta particles in succession to form an element R . Write
2 nuclear equations to show the above transformation of P to R. [2]

7) A certain amount of heat H will raise the temperature of 2 gram of a material X

from 30 C to 7 0C and the same amount of heat will raise the temperature of 6
gram of material Y from 4 0C to 10 0C Find the ratio of heat capacity of Y to the
heat capacity of X [2]
