2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
The Alarm Control Unit (ACU) has the following features:
! Collection of the alarms of all plug-ins in a subrack and activation of the appropriate alarm relay
! RS-232 interface to access the Monitor of the plug-ins
! Supervision of the -48VDC input power supply inputs
! Distribution and supervision of the external clock
! RS-485 interface to the subrack backplane for TMN functions
The ACU unit is placed in the rightmost slot (slot 13) of the Watson subrack SZ.379. The ACU is
connected to the plug-ins over the backplane and powered by dual -48 VDC inputs via the PSB.

2.2 Alarm Relays

Two alarm relays are located on the ACU, one to signal urgent alarms and one to signal non-urgent
alarms. Both normally open and normally closed potential-free contacts are available.
Each plug-in in the subrack has two alarm outputs (urgent alarm, non-urgent alarm). All alarm out-
puts share the same "wired-OR" bus on the subrack backplane. The ACU will activate its urgent
alarm relay if one or more plug-ins assert the urgent alarm. It will activate the non-urgent alarm re-
lay if one or more plug-ins assert the non-urgent alarm or if one of the power supplies fails. Please
refer to the respective operating manuals for the criteria for each alarm condition.

2.3 Monitor (RS-232) Interface

The ACU has an RS-232 monitor interface connector on the front panel giving access to the plug-
ins. Using a VT100 compatible terminal or terminal emulation it is possible to monitor events, dis-
play information about the plug-in/DSL links, locate fault and have full system configuration capabili-
ties.
The terminal for the monitor should be configured as follows:
• 9600 baud, asynchronous
• 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit
• XON/XOFF enabled
• no new line on carriage return (i.e. no line feed on carriage return)
At any one time, only one of the plug-ins can be logically connected to this monitor interface. The
appropriate plug-in is addressed according to its physical location in the subrack.

Revision: 2006-10-06 2-1

Watson Alarm Control Unit ACU-2-Manual.doc
Operating Manual Version 2.0-01

If the local powering of the ACU fails (the ACU Status LED is off) the monitor function will cease to
operate, but the functionality of the plug-ins is not affected by this.

2.4 Powering
The ACU supervises the two 48 VDC inputs to the subrack (connected to the PSB). If one of the
two 48VDC inputs turns off, the non-urgent alarm will be activated..

2.5 External Clock

The ACU supervises and distributes an external 2048 kHz clock signal. It has a 75Ω BNC input
which is transformer coupled.
The clock input is sent to all plug-ins over the subrack backplane. This is to enable the plug-ins E1
interfaces to be synchronized to a central master clock, if needed.
If the external clock fails then a Loss of External Clock (LOXCK) alarm is asserted over the back-
plane to the plug-ins.

2.6 TMN (RS-485) Interface

The ACU provides a RS-485 interface for management purposes. The RS-485 signals are wired to
the backplane and distributed to all the plug-ins in the same subrack.
A SNMP Agent (Communications Management Unit CMU) can access the plug-ins through this
TMN interface for remote management purposes, cf. [1].
If there are two subracks controlled by one CMU then these subracks must be connected with a
TMN cable between the ACUs installed in each subrack.

5.2 Subrack number

In installations where one CMU controls two subracks the subrack number must be configured with
jumper J1:

J1 J1

J2 J2

J3 J3

Subrack 0 Subrack 1

Figure 5-2: Subrack number configuration

The first subrack (the subrack with the CMU installed) is subrack 0. The second subrack must be
configured as subrack 1 on the ACU in the second subrack by equipping jumper J1. Cf. [1].

5.3 RS-485 Termination Impedance

If a 120 Ω termination impedance on the RS-485 bus is required, jumpers J4 and J5 must be
equipped to connect the termination impedances. Jumper J4 connects the termination impedance
of the receive path, jumper J5 that one of the transmit path.
Note: The termination impedance is needed only once on a RS-485 bus (in subrack 1)
