Clean Cities Stakeholder Summit Wrap-Up

The U.S. Department of Energy hosted its first Clean Cities Stakeholder Summit in June. The summit was a successful event bringing together key stakeholders that play a role in deploying alternative and renewable fuels, idle-reduction measures, fuel economy improvements, and emerging transportation technologies. Alicia joined the Stakeholder Summit and attended several beneficial training sessions and presentations. Training in Electric Drive Community Readiness offered steps to preparing our community for electric vehicles along with numerous resources to assist in this process. Presentations included EPAs New Policies for Vehicle/Engine Conversion, Tackling the Work Truck Market, Choosing the Right Solution for Your Fleet, and more. Specific fuel types & technologies were thoroughly covered in presentations and with a ride and drive of alternative fuel vehicles at the Indianapolis Speedway. Opportunities, new developments and success stories were presented for the Natural Gas, Propane, Electric Vehicle, Ethanol, Biodiesel, and Idle Reduction markets. Presentations from the Summit are available for our stakeholders review, just let Dianne know If there is a specific topic or fuel type you would like to know more about. Together we can reduce our communitys consumption of petroleum.

Shell Opens Its First U.S. Hydrogen Station

Shell has opened its first hydrogen-fueling station in the United States. A site of many firsts, the fueling station in Torrance, CA is also the only fed by an active hydrogen pipeline. Thats a major step forward for the hydrogen industry, a move to eliminate truck -delivered hydrogen from the market and thus improve the environmental impact of the fuels delivery. With incentives throughout the state, California is expectected to see rapid growth in similar fueling stations and public adoption of hydrogen vehicles. According to Wire Magazine, the station is run by Shell on land leased from Toyota, which remains enamored with hydrogen. Honda, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz promise to have mass-market hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in showrooms by 2015. The hydrogen will come from Air Products plants in Wilmington and Carson that serve several industrial sites, including the Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance. The project was funded in part by the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Department of Energy. (from Wired.com)

Follow Recommended Maintenance Plans

In an effort to make it more user-friendly and attractive, the coalition has redesigned the Southern Colorado Clean cities website. Check it out at http:// southern.cleancitiescolorado.org The site now features clickable links to all our stakeholders websites, an autoupdating roll of our Facebook page, detailed information on a variety of alternative fuel types, direct access to refueling stations in our region, videos from MotorWeeks Clean Cities Success Stories series, past newsletters, breaking news and much more! Were actively working to keep the SC4 website up-to-date and entertaining for new and returning visitors alike. If youve got ideas to help us make the site more engaging and interesting, please email Nate Searing at natesearing@yahoo.com.

A vehicle that is well maintained operates with greater efficiency and ultimately improves overall vehicle performance and fuel economy. Fouled spark plugs, a dirty air filter, or a clogged fuel filter will have an adverse effect on your fuel economy. Check your vehicles owner's manual for maintenance recommendations and schedule check-ups accordingly.

USDA Shows Support For Small Farms

The USDA is accepting grant applications to assist small, socially disadvantaged agricultural producers and cooperatives in rural areas . Almost $3.5 million in grants are available through USDA Rural Development's Small, Socially Disadvantaged Producer Grant Program. It is part of the Department's ongoing effort to expand outreach to rural residents to ensure that all communities have equal access to USDA programs and services. Funding is available to cooperatives or associations of cooperatives where at least 75 percent of the governing board or membership are small, socially disadvantaged producers. Grants can be used for product improvements, business plan development or economic development activities. The maximum grant award per applicant is $200,000. The grants assist eligible producers like Frank Taylor who returned home after college and established the Winston County Self-Help Cooperative in Mississippi, a consortium of local farmers that pool their resources to receive training in business development, conservation and health. Question of the Month

What are the factors that determine the price of gasoline?
ANSWER:
The final price of a gallon of gasoline is a product of many factors that can be complicated and constantly changing, but it comes down to the concept of supply and demand. Currently, the average price of regular gasoline in the United States, including all taxes, is $3.78/gallon, as compared to $2.40/gallon in October 2010. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the current cost of gasoline can be broken down into the following components: * Crude oil price (as purchased by refiners): 69% * Refining costs and profits: 16% * Taxes (including federal and state): 10% * Distribution and marketing costs and profits: 5% Of these components, changes in the cost of crude oil have the greatest impact on gasoline prices. As crude oil prices increase, they become a larger percentage of the overall cost of gasoline at the pump. Between 2000 and 2008, the average retail price of gasoline was $2.06/gallon and crude oil prices only made up 51% of the overall price, as compared to the breakdown above.
