FUNCTIONS Worksheet

This document provides examples and practice problems for working with functions. It covers evaluating functions for given values of x, finding inverse functions, and composing functions. Students are guided through worked examples and then practice similar problems independently. The document aims to build skills in algebraic manipulation of functions.

Worksheet

NOTES SOLUTIONS

This worksheet will show you how to work out different types of function
questions. Each section contains a worked example, a question with hints
and then questions for you to work through on your own.

Section A

Worked Example

Find the value of ( ) = + + when = .

Step 1: Substitute = 3 into the function ( ). Replace every in the function with the numerical
value 3.

(3) = (3) + 2(3) 9(3) + 1

Step 2: Simplify where possible by multiplying out the brackets and applying powers.

27 + 2(9) 27 + 1 = 27 + 18 27 + 1

Step 3: Complete the final sum.

27 + 18 27 + 1 = 18 + 1 = 19

Answer: ( ) =

Guided Example

If ( ) = ( + )( )( + ) what is the value of ( )?

Step 1: Substitute = 4 into the function ( ).

Step 2: Simplify each term where possible.

Step 3: Compute the final sum.

Now it’s your turn!
If you get stuck, look back at the worked and guided examples.

1. Complete the following:

a) Find the value of (5) when ( ) = 3 2.

b) Find the value of (7) when ( ) = 4 .

c) Find the value of (9) when ( ) = 2 + 1.

d) Find the value of ( 8) when ( ) = 5 + 3( ) 2 .

2. Solve the following for x:

a) ( )= 5 + 2, ( )= 4.

b) ( ) = 18 2, ( ) = 6.

3. If ( ) = 2 + 1 what is an expression for (16 )?

Section B – Higher Only

Worked Example

Find the inverse function of ( ) = + .

Step 1: Replace ( ) with .

=2 +1

Step 2: Rearrange the terms to make the subject of the equation.

1=2

1
=
2

Step 3: Replace with and with ( ).

1
= ( )
2

Answer: ( )=

Guided Example

Find the inverse function of ( ) = .

Step 1: Replace ( ) with .

Step 2: Make the subject of the equation.

Step 3: Replace with and with ( ).

4. Find the inverse of the following functions:

a) ( )=4 +7

b) ( ) = 15 +3

c) ( )=

d) ( )=
5. Find the value of ( ) = 3 if = (6).

6. Find the value of ( ) = if = (7).

7. Solve ( ) = 3 + 6 for given ( ) = 2.

8. If ( )=5 3 what is ( )?
Section C – Higher Only
Worked Example

Given ( ) = and ( ) = + find ( ).

Step 1: Place the innermost function ( ) into the outermost function ( ) in place of .

( )=2 ( ) 7 = 2(4 + 5) 7

Step 2: Simplify by expanding the brackets and collecting like terms.

( ) = 2(4 + 5) 7 = 8 + 10 7
( )=8 +3

Answer: ( )= +

Worked Example

Given ( ) = and ( ) = find ( ).

Step 1: Place the innermost function ( ) into the outermost function ( ) in place of .
( ) = (3 3) 7(3 3)

Step 2: Simplify by expanding the brackets and collecting like terms.

( ) = (3 3)(3 3) 7(3 3)
( ) = (9 9 9 + 9) 7(3 3)
( )=9 18 + 9 21 + 21 = 9 39 + 30

Step 3: Substitute = 2 into ( ) to find (2).

(2) = 9(2) 39(2) + 30
(2) = 12

Answer: ( )=
