People in the early days use body parts as units of measurement. Some of these units
are as follows:
• Cubit is the measure from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger when the
arm is extended.
• Digit is the thickness or width of the index finger.
• Palm is the width of the four fingers placed together excluding the thumb.
• Foot is based on the measurement of an individual foot standardized by King
Henry I because his foot was 12 inches long.
• Hand span is the measure from the tip of the little finger to the tip of the thumb
when the hand is stretched out.
• Fathom is the distance from the middle fingertip of one hand to the middle
fingertip of the other hand when the arms are stretched sideways.

• Pace is the measure of distance from one step to another.
• Girth is the measurement around one’s stomach, the belt-measure.
The units of measurement using body parts were called non-standard units of
measurement. Discrepancies occurred when comparing the measurements of the
same thing due to different lengths of body parts of the ones measuring it.
To address the problems in the discrepancies in measurement using body parts, the
basic unit of length in the English System of Measurement was devised such as inch,
foot, and yard. The relations among these units were set as follows:
12 inches (in) = 1 foot 5 feet = 1 pace
3 feet (ft) = 1 yard 5280 ft = 1 mile (mi)
By the 18th century, the standard unit of measurement was devised called the Metric
System. The metric system was a decimal-based system of units that make use of
prefixes to convey meanings and relationships among measures. The standard unit
for length is meter, derived from the Greek word metron which means “to measure”,
for weight is gram, for volume is liter, and for time is second. Here are some of the
common prefixes used in the metric system. Note that these prefixes may also be
used for base units for mass, volume, and other measurements.

Length
Sean plans to buy cable to connect router to his computer. Using his arms, he
measured that it measures about 9.5 meters. The cable being sold in meters is Php
12 per meter. a) How many meters of cable would he need to buy?
b) How much will he pay for it?
Solution:
a) 10 meters (Note: 9.5 is rounded to whole number since cable is sold in meters)
b) 10 x Php 12 = Php 120 pesos

To measure length, we use standard measuring instruments for length such as ruler,
meterstick, tape measure, caliper, and micrometer.
• Ruler can measure objects up to 30 cm with precision of 1 mm.
• Meterstick is 1 m in length with precision about 1 mm.
• Tape measure is a compact flexible ruler that can be rolled and pulled out
and can measure up to 25 feet.
• Caliper can measure small object’s diameter with high accuracy and precision
of 0.01 mm.
• Micrometer can measure smaller object’s diameter with more accuracy and
precision measurement.

To measure the length of an object using a ruler or a meter stick, place the
instrument parallel to the object to be measured. Do not use the end of the ruler to
start measuring. Start measuring from zero on the ruler.
Example:
The tip of the pencil is at 0 and the other end is at 16. Hence, the length of the pencil
is 16 centimeters (cm).
Relationships of units of measurement for linear measures:
1 kilometer (km) = 1 000 meters (m)
1 meter = 39.37 inches (in) or 3.3 feet
1 kilometer = 39,370 inches
1 mile = 5,280 feet
Since 1 foot = 12 inches, then,
1 mile = 5,280 x 12 = 63,360 inches.
A mile is approximately equal to 1.6 kilometers.
Mass/Weight
Weight is the amount of pull or force of gravity on the mass of an object. Mass is the
amount of matter in an object. As the pull of gravity changes, there is a change in
weight but not in mass of an object. On earth, weight is numerically equal to mass.
The base SI unit in metric system is kilogram (kg) and for the English system is
pound (lb). Milligram is used for very light objects, kilogram for heavy objects, and
metric ton for very heavy objects.
In measuring mass, we have to remember the following:
1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g)
1 pound (lb) = 0.45 kilogram (kg)
1 kilogram (kg) = 2.2 pounds (lbs)

g or 0.001 g (use for very small unit)

1 metric ton = 1,000 kg or 2,200 lb or 1.1 tons
It is also important to note the following:
1 gram is the weight of 1 milliliter of water
1 kilogram is the weight of 1 liter of water
1 metric ton is the weight of 1 cubic meter of water
To measure weight, we use triple-beam balance, weighing scale, bathroom scale, two-
pan balance, spring scale, etc.
• Triple-beam balance is use in chemistry and physics courses that can
measure up to 600 grams of solid chemicals for use in solutions.
• Bathroom scale is used to measure a person’s weight in kilograms or in
pounds.
• Kitchen scale is used to measure small quantities of food up to 2 kg or 3 kg.
• Two-pan balance is used to equilibrate mass.
• Spring scale consists of a spring fixed at one end with a hook to attach an
object to the other that measures weight.
Volume
It is the measure of how much the container can hold or also known as the capacity.
Liter is the basic unit to measure volume of fluid in metric system.
Relationships of units of measures for volume:
1 liter = 1 cubic decimeter
= 1 000 cubic centimeters
1 gallon = 3.79 liters

1 milliliter = 1000
or 0.001 liter
1 milliliter (ml) = 1 cubic centimeter (cc or cm3)
5 milliliters = 1 teaspoon
15 milliliters = 1 tablespoon
1 cubic meter (m3) = 1.3 cubic yards

Example: Determine the volume of a rectangular container van with length, width,
and height of 52m, 13 m, and 20 m respectively.

Time
It is measured in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
1 day = 24 hours 1 minute = 60 seconds (s)
1 hour = 60 minutes (min)
Two types of notations in stating time:
a) 12-hour notation (standard time)
a.m. or ante meridiem is from 12 midnight to 12 noon
p.m. or post meridiem is from 12 noon to 12 midnight
b) 24-hour notation (military or astronomical time)
From 0000 hours to 2400 hours
Angle
It is formed when two rays shared a common endpoint called vertex. An angle is
measured in degree and radian. A protractor is used to measure angle in degree. To
use a protractor, make sure that the cross bar is centered at the vertex of an angle.
One leg is aligned with one side of the line passing through the cross bar and the
measurement of the angle is determined by the other leg.
Temperature
It is the degree of hotness or coldness of an object or substance. A thermometer is
used to measure temperature.
• Gabriel Fahrenheit devised a scale for the mercury thermometer such that the
freezing point of water is 32 ºF and the boiling point is 212 ºF.
• Anders Celsius developed the scale for the Celsius thermometer such that the
freezing point of water was 0 ºC and the boiling point was 100 ºC.

Converting Units of Measurement

Units are everywhere, it describes the weight, size or duration of things and gives
precise measurements. Units can be converted to another unit. We can convert
kilometer to meter or teaspoon to cup to use as alternative measurement. In this
lesson, we are going to discuss how to convert units of measurement from metric
system to English system and vice-versa.
In English system of conversion, the units are much less straightforward. To convert
a unit of measurement, know the unit you want to convert, refer to table of
measurement and write it in fraction form and then multiply.

In English System we have what we call unit factor or conversion ratio means a ratio
equal to one (1). The conversion ratio is based upon the concept of equivalent values.
To convert units from English system we need a standardize table of measurement.
