is 5 m long.
32 = 9, 4 2 = 16 and 52 = 25. Tip
Hence 32 + 4 2 = 52. 9 + 16 = 25

This result is called Pythagoras’ theorem. Pythagoras was born on
the Greek island of Samos and wrote a proof of this theorem over
2500 years ago.

Answer
ADC is a right-angled triangle. AC is
the hypotenuse.
If AC is x cm, then by Pythagoras’ theorem:
x 2 = 7.52 + 11.32 = 183.94
=
So x =

number. Round to 1 decimal place.

Answer
a Ari is incorrect because the hypotenuse is the The hypotenuse is the side opposite the

b Using Pythagoras’ theorem: a 2 + 3.52 = 6.0 2
So a 2 = 6.0 2 − 3.52 = 23.75
