MALIN KUNDANG

Once upon a time, there was a young man living in West Sumatra
named Malin Kundang. He lived with a poor fisherman family. His
father went to sea to make a living for his family and he never came
back home. People made an issue about his father’s death. This issue
made his mother anxious every day.

Several months later, his mother chose to forget about his father. She
realized that she had to work hard. She did a lot of work all day and
night. Unfortunately, she still didn’t get enough money for her family.

Malin couldn’t stand his mother’s suffering. He decided to go sailing

and made money. He wanted to become a rich man so he could help
his mother. At first, his mother didn’t allow him to go. She was afraid
Malin did not come back like his father did. At the last, Malin got his
mother's allowance to go.

Several years later, he became a rich sailor. He had many ships and
crews. He was married to a beautiful girl and had three children.

One day, he had a business on an island which is his hometown. On

this island he met an old lady. She hugged Malin very tightly. However,
Malin scolded and pushed her. He realized that the old woman is his
mother. But, he was afraid that his wife and children knew about his
mother. So, he told the old lady to go away. He said his mother was
from a rich family. Noticing her son's bad attitude, she was sad and
angry. She prayed and said that Malin had to change into stone. Malin
kundang even scolded her more.

After finishing his business, he went sailing back with his wife and
children. On the sea, the sky instantly overcast. Heavy lighting and
rain was failing. Their ship hit the rocks and crashed. Malin swayed to
the shore. The magic happened. He turned into stone, like her mother
wished. It was known as Malin Kundang stone by people of West
Sumatra.
SANGKURIANG

In ancient times, there was a girl named Dayang Sumbi who lived in
West Java. She was also a clever and smart girl. The prince of the
heavenly kingdom of Kahyangan fell in love with her beauty and
intelligence. He wanted to make Dayang Sumbi as his wife. Prince
came to his father and asked for his permission to marry Sumbi. There
was a rule that people from Kahyangan could never live among
humans. But, his father gave the prince permission with one one
condition. When they had a child, the prince had to transform into a
dog. The prince accepted his father’s condition.
One day, the prince and Sumbi got married and lived happily in the
jungle. Then, Sumbi gave birth to a son. So, the prince kept his
promise to change into a dog named Tumang. Their son's name was
Sangkuriang. He was very handsome like the prince. Every day, he
went to hunt animals in the jungle. One day, when Sangkuriang was
hunting for the animals, he unintentionally killed Tumang. He missed
his shot and the arrow hit Tumang. Then, he went home and told his
mother about the dog.
“What did you do?” She was so angry and took a cooking tool. She hit
Sangkuriang’s head with it. She was so sad and cried a lot.
Looking his mother cried, Sangkuriang felt sorry to her. However, he
was confused. He thought his mother loved dogs more than him. Then,
he decided to leave his mother for a journey. In the morning, Sumbi
felt better and stopped crying. She went to the jungle to find
Sangkuriang. However, she could not find him. She was exhausted and
decided to go to house. In her dream, she met her husband.
“My love, don’t be sad. take my heart from my body. Then, soak it
with the water, use the water to bathe. You will look young forever.”
said her husband. She followed the prince’s order. So, she looked more
beautiful and younger.
After many years, Sangkuriang stopped in a village when he was on a
journey. In the village, he met a beautiful girl and fell in love with her.
He wanted to marry the girl he loved. He didn’t notice that the village
was his homeland. Even the beautiful girl he loved was his own
mother, Dayang Sumbi. One day, Sangkuriang asked Sumbi to fix his
turban on his head. Sumbi was so shocked when she found the scar on
Sangkuriang’s head. A scar was at the same place where she hit
Sangkuriang’s head years ago.
Then, Sumbi asked for guidance from God. After praying, she was sure
that the young man was Sangkuriang. She decided to prevent
Sangkuriang from marrying her. However, she didn’t want to hurt him
by cancelling the wedding. So, she had a condition for Sangkuriang.
Sangkuriang had to make a lake and a beautiful boat in one night.
Sangkuriang took her challenge without a doubt because he had
mastered some strong magic. After the sunset, he went to the hill. He
called many genies to help him. He commanded the genies to build a
lake. He also gave an order to geniuses to make a big boat from the
trees. In a short time, Sangkuriang and his genies almost finished
their work.
Dayang Sumbi realized that Sangkuriang would finish her order. She
immediately asked all the women in the village. She asked them to
make a wave from a long red scarf. It looked as if the sun would rise
immediately. This condition made the roosters crow. The farmer also
prepared to go to the paddy field.
The genies immediately stopped their work and left Sangkuriang
alone. Sangkuriang was so angry because he could not finish his work.
He failed to marry Sumbi. He kicked the unfinished boat with all of his
power. It flew and landed in a valley. After landing, the boat turned
into a mountain which is called Mount Tangkuban Perahu now. He also
kicked the lake. The water drained from the lake and became a wide
plain area. The area became a city which is called Bandung.
RORO JONGGRANG

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. The

people lived peacefully. However, soon their happy lives were disturbed
by the Pengging Kingdom. The king, Bandung Bondowoso, wanted
to occupy Prambanan. He was a mean king.
The war between Prambanan and Pengging could not be avoided.
Prambanan lost the war and was led by the new king, Bandung
Bondowoso. Pengging could win the war because Bandung Bondowoso
had supernatural power.
His soldiers were not only humans but also genies. Those creatures
always obeyed Bandung Bondowoso. They always did whatever
Bandung Bondowoso asked them to do. The king of Prambanan had a
beautiful daughter. Her name was Loro Jonggrang (Rara Jonggrang).
Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.
"If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand temples in
just one night," said Loro Jonggrang.
She hated Bandung Bondowoso because he made the people of
Prambanan suffer.
"What? Impossible! You just gave me an excuse for not marrying me!"
said Bandung Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He asked the genies
to help him.
Then all those genies worked hard to build the 1.000 temples.
Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from the lady-in-waiting that the
building of 1.000 temples was almost finished.
She was so scared; she did not want to marry Bandung Bondowoso.
And then she had a great idea. She asked all the ladies in waiting to
help her.
"Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Come on! Hurry up!" said
Loro Jonggrang.
All those ladies-in-waiting were confused. They did not know why Loro
Jonggrang asked them to prepare a lot of straw and mortars in the
middle of the night.
"Listen, all those geniuses are building the temples, right? We have to
stop them by burning the straw and making some noise by pounding
the mortar. The genies will think that the sun is going to rise and they
will run away. Genies are afraid of sunlight."
It worked! All those genies thought that the sun rose. They did not
know the light was from the fire that was burning the straw. And the
noise from pounding the mortar was like the start of a new day.
Bandung Bondowoso was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang just tricked
him.
"You cannot fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I
just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth
temple."
With his supernatural power, Bandung Bondowoso made Loro
Jonggrang a temple. Until now, the temple still stands in Prambanan
area, Central Java. And the temple is named Loro Jonggrang
temple.
