Unit 1: ICT
What is technology?
The tools that help us use, create, manage and exchange information - HOWEVER -
They are just tools, the teacher is the one that uses them.

What does it mean to teach or learn using ICT tools?

The use of ICT (Information Communication and Technology) in education is the use
of computer-based materials for the instructional process.
ICT provides help and support for the effective use of computers to serve the
purpose of the learning materials.

Need of ICT in the classroom:

-Learning and teaching takes place outside the classroom
-Can help to improve and develop the quality of education
-Fosters motivation and encouragement + creativity
-Provides easy access to learning

Main stages of ICT in the classroom:

-Integration approach: Implementing the right use of ICT in a particular subject area.
Here, review of the curriculum is needed

-Enhancement approach: Using ICT to give greater emphasis on the topic introduced
(As the use of Powerpoint for debates in the classroom)

-Complementary approach: When ICT is used to aid and support the student’s
learning

Teachers should believe:

-In the effectiveness of education
-That its use will not cause any disturbance in the classroom
-That they have control over technology

How to source information or resources?

Using ICT means using the internet and email (google, wikipedia, grammarly…) and
also using software (google docs, excel, word…)
Plus, teachers and students can find information very easily by using tools such as
YouTube, Twitter, Skype, Wikipedia, all kinds of Blogs or Whatsapp
Skills that can be acquired through the use of ICT tools.
Teachers and students can get the following skills:
-Blogging
-Podcasting
-Programming
-Designing
-Uploading
-Twittering
-Bookmarking
-Searching
-Editing
-Downloading
-Subscribing

Advantages of Technology in the classroom

Technology:
-Promotes individual learning
-Bridges the gap between teachers and students
-Encourages group learning
-Simplifies teachers’ work
-Breaks communication barriers
-Creates digital resources

Disadvantages of Technology in the classroom

Technology can be:
-A distraction in the classroom (scrolling on twitter, chatting…)
-Expensive (schools with small budget can not afford it)
-Needed of training (both teachers and students need extra training on how to use
various educational technologies)

Conclusion
In today’s society, the use of ICT has become part and parcel of human life and is
fast becoming the digitalized enhanced teaching and learning norm in education

Our main objective is to find out how this can be performed and what is the real
outcome of its use

Task:
“A task is a piece of classroom work that involves learners in comprehending,
manipulating, producing in the target language while their attention is focused on
mobilizing their grammatical knowledge in order to express meaning, and in which
the intention is to convey meaning rather than to manipulate form. The task should
also have a sense of completeness, being able to stand alone as a communicative
act in its own right with a beginning, a middle and an end.”

A task is a piece of work undertaken for oneself freely or with some kind of reward

-Examples of task:
Answering the phone - task that doesn’t have a script
Make a coffee -
Fix the car -

-Some concrete examples of a task:

Preparing a meal
Ordering food in a cafe
Talking to someone on the phone
Compiling qualities of a good friend
Two pictures or texts to find the differences
Solving a problem
Designing a brochure

A task always:
Focuses on the use of authentic language
Has meaning, is meaningful for students while they use the target language
Has a basis on the outcome that the students are supposed to achieve
Procedure for tasks:
Willis (1996) recommends the following sequences of activities:
-Pretask: Introduction to the topic and task: Teacher explores the topic with the class,
highlights useful words and phrases. This helps students understand the task.
In this part the teacher:
-Presents (as suggestions) what will be expected of the students.
-Prepares the students with key vocabulary or grammar
-Present a model of the class (optional)
Visual Thinking
WebQuest
A webquest is basically a lesson or unit where students use internet resources
provided by the teacher to not only gain but also apply knowledge.

Originally conceived as an activity to practice research skills using the web

Students gather information about a topic, summarize, synthesize, organize,

evaluate and present the information

Also a way to have students use thinking or evaluative skills they learned in class

What is not a webquest

-Having learners go look at a page
-Play a game
-Turn your name

Key parts of webquests

-Intro
What questions should be answered?
What are the main areas of the topic?
What are some conflicts about the topic?

-Task
What is the task that the student undertakes?
Does it require synthesis, evaluation?
Is the task engaging for students?

-Process
-Resources
-Evaluation
-Conclusion
-Teacher page
Gamification

Disadvantages
Potential distraction = lack of productivity
Possible excessive competitiveness
Balance between recreational and educational aspects
All players have the same objectives but different learning styles or interests

Artificial intelligences
UNESCO planned for AI in educational policies to take advantage of its possibilities.
The idea is to support the development of new models made possible by artificial
intelligence technologies with the aim of providing educational and training courses.

How can we apply this to education?

Advanced curriculum design. Artificial intelligence can help teachers search for
information on relevant content for curriculum design. In this way, the content chosen
will be up-to-date and in line with the latest trends.

Personalized tutoring. Artificial intelligence can also be used to grade tests or exams,
detect the most common mistakes made by students or measure their learning.
Moreover, as it is a virtual tool, it will be available 24 hours a day and from anywhere.

Personalized learning content. Each child has a way of learning and a speed to
acquire knowledge an the AI can be adapted to each case and offer the appropriate
content and in the form that best suits the child: videos, audios, etc.

What can we do with these tools?

Just some examples:

-Answer questions about a particular topic
-Write jokes and poems
-Write articles with specific word limit
-Describe characters and historical facts
-Generate blogs
-Make exams
-Prepare slides
