CATCH-UP FRIDAYS TEACHING GUIDE

I. General Overview
Catch-up Subject: Health Education Grade Level: 10
Quarterly Theme: Sexual Reproductive Health Sub-theme: Prevention from STI
(refer to Enclosure No. 3 of DM 001, s. 2024, Quarter 3) (refer to Enclosure No. 3 of DM 001, s. 2024, Quarter 3)

Time: 8:30– 9:30 AM (Science) Date: February 2, 2024

II. Session Outline
Session Title: "Fire Within: Navigating the Eruptions of Sexual Reproductive
Health"
Session At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
Objectives: a) Compare and contrast safety measures and precautions associated
with living near volcanoes and practicing safe sexual behaviors,
demonstrating an understanding of potential risks and preventive
measures.
b) Recognize the emotional significance of safety measures and
precautions in both contexts, fostering a sense of responsibility and
empathy for those affected by volcanic events or reproductive health
challenges.
c) Apply critical thinking skills to analyze challenges and propose
solutions related to both volcanic activity and sexual reproductive
health, demonstrating the ability to actively problem-solve in these
domains.
Key Concepts:  Explore the metaphorical connection between volcanic eruptions and
the transmission of STIs, emphasizing the importance of prevention
measures to avoid the unexpected "eruption" of infections.
 Draw parallels between the protective barriers used to divert lava flow
in volcanic-prone areas and the importance of barrier methods, such
as condoms, in preventing the transmission of STIs.
 Highlight the necessity of regular monitoring and testing for volcanic
activity and relate it to the importance of regular STI testing to detect
and address potential risks early.
III. Teaching Strategies
Components Duration Activities and Procedures
Activity: "Metaphorical Mind Mapping"
Materials: large sheets of paper, markers, and sticky notes.
 Explain that you are exploring the metaphorical
connection between volcanoes and sexual reproductive
health, particularly focusing on STI prevention.
 Brief discussion about common perceptions and
knowledge about volcanoes and sexual health. Ask
Introduction and
10 mins open-ended questions to stimulate thoughts.
Warm-Up
 Individually create a mind map on their sheets of paper,
using words, phrases, and drawings to represent their
initial thoughts about the connection between volcanoes
and sexual reproductive health.
 Encourage participants to explain the symbolism or
metaphors they used and their reasoning behind their
choices.
Concept 15 mins Activity: Unveiling Connections between Volcanoes and Sexual
Exploration Health"
 Divide participants into small groups, ensuring diversity
within each group.
 Craft scenarios related to volcanic activity, drawing
parallels to sexual reproductive health, emphasizing STI
prevention, safe practices, and community awareness.
 Provide each group with a volcanic scenario and ask
them to discuss how it metaphorically relates to aspects
of sexual reproductive health. Encourage them to
identify parallels and draw connections.Allow each

group to present their "Metaphoric Magma Map" and

explain the metaphorical connections they identified.
Emphasize creativity and depth of understanding in
their interpretations.
Activity:"Core Values Eruption: Nurturing Healthy Connections"
Materials: Marker, Chart Paper
 Start with a brief discussion on the importance of
personal values in making informed decisions related to
sexual health. Emphasize the interconnected themes of
volcanoes and sexual health introduced earlier.
 Provide participants with a list of values such as
respect, communication, responsibility, safety, and
trust. Ask them to individually rank and reflect on these
Valuing 20 mins values in the context of STI prevention.
 Form small groups and encourage participants to share
their chosen values within their groups. Facilitate
discussions on why certain values are prioritized and
how they relate to responsible sexual behavior.
 Provide each group with a large chart paper and
markers. Ask them to create a "Values Eruption Chart"
where they visually represent their chosen values and
how they contribute to fostering a healthy connection
between the metaphorical volcano and sexual health.
Activity: Traversing Empathy for Every Juan
Materials:
 "Reflect on how the metaphor of a volcano can be
applied to your understanding of sexual reproductive
health, especially in the context of preventing STIs."
 Encourage them to express their thoughts, feelings, and
personal reflections on the prompt.
Journal Writing 15 mins
 Invite participants to share their reflections with a
partner or in small groups, emphasizing a supportive
and non-judgmental environment.
 Conclude the activity by expressing gratitude for
participants' willingness to engage in personal reflection.
Reinforce the importance of self-awareness and personal
exploration in understanding complex topics.
