MECHANICS

1. A 4.0 kg block starts up a 30° incline with 128 J of kinetic energy. How far will it
slide up the incline if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the
incline is 0.3?

2. A spring with sprint constant 275 N/m is attached to a 53.0 kg piece of uniform
metal. The system is in mechanical equilibrium as shown. How much has the
spring been stretched?

3. A pendulum passes x=0 with a speed of 0.5 m/s; it swings out to A=0.2 m. What is
the period T of the pendulum?

4. Three blocks are connected and pulled to the right on a horizontal, frictionless
table by a force of magnitude T=65.0 N, as shown below. The masses of the
blocks are: m1 = 12 kg, m2 = 24 kg, and m3 = 31 kg. Calculate:
a.) the acceleration of the system and
b.) the tensions T1 and T2.

ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM

1. A conductor is made in the form of a hollow cylinder with inner and outer radii a
and b, respectively. It carries a current I, uniformly distributed over its cross
section. Derive expressions for the magnitude of the magnetic field in the regions:
a.) r < a
b.) a < r < b
c.) r > b

2. An RLC circuit has L = 12 mH, C = 1.6 μF, and R = 1.5 Ω.

a.) At what time t will the amplitude of the charge oscillation in the circuit be
50% of its initial value?
b.) How many oscillations are completed in this time?

3. A long straight wire carries constant current I, as shown in the picture below. A
metal bar of length L moves at constant velocity v in the direction of the wire.
a.) Calculate the emf induced in the bar.
b.) Which point, a or b, is at higher potential?

4. An isolated charged conducting sphere of radius 12 cm creates an electric field of

4.9 × 104 N/C at a distance of 21 cm from its center.
a.) What is the surface charge density?
b.) What is its capacitance?
