Who is Barack Obama?
BIOGRAPHY

Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Obama

spent his childhood between Hawaii and Indonesia, a country where
he experienced the conditions of poverty.
Returning to the United States in 1983, he entered Columbia University
to study political science, and specialized in international relations.
first step into politics in 1990 –1991
Obama's political career began to take shape in 1990, when he
made contact with Judson Miller, one of Harold Washington's
advisors, who in 1983 became the first black mayor of Chicago. As
time went by, Miller would become one of the pillars of Obama's
electoral campaign. In 1991 he entered Harvard University
(Cambridge, Massachusetts) to further his higher studies, and

Obama's
there he was elected the first black president of the Harvard Law
Review,
second step into politics in 1996 –2000
His first political success came in 1996. Thanks to the sponsorship

entry into
of Judge Abner Mikua and Emil Jones, African-American
Democratic leader in the Illinois Senate.Obama used his new
position to prepare his entry into the United States Congress, where
he aspired to replace Bobby Rush, leader of the Illinois Black

politics
Panthers, by attracting his electorate. The first attempt took place in
2000 and was a strong setback in Obama's aspirations, who was
doubled by Rush in number of votes.

last step into politics in 2000 – 2004

CBetween 2000 and 2004, Obama dedicated himself to strengthening his electorate.
In 2004 he obtained new mentors in Washington, among which notable figures of
the Democratic Party, such as John Kerry and Ted Kennedy, stood out. Thanks to
their support and that of his electorate, he was elected national representative at the
2004 Boston Democratic Convention.
After prevailing on the Democratic side, the young African-American lawyer faced
Jack Ryan, the Republican candidate, for the representation of the State of Illinois.
On this occasion, his opponent was marred by a sexual scandal and Obama obtained
the congressional position in dispute, thus becoming the fifth African-American to
enter the United States Congress and the second for the Democratic Party.
Obama took the first big step toward the presidency of
the United States in February 2007, when he filed his
candidacy for the Democratic Party primaries. The
other big bet of this formation was Senator Hillary
Clinton, wife of former President Bill Clinton, who had
an advantage in the polls. The campaign, very tight
throughout, ended up being decided in favor of Obama,
who won with 1,953 delegates compared to 1,770 for his
rival.
The official nomination as the Democratic candidate for
the presidency of the United States took place on June 3,
2008. Republican John McCain, whom Obama always
considered a simple heir to George Bush, was his rival in
the presidential race. During the campaign, McCain tried
to distance himself from his predecessor, but his speech
came off as erratic and unconvincing. The Democratic
candidate's message of renewal and hope, however,
resonated with the electorate; Obama progressively
widened his lead over McCain in the polls, and finally
won the November 4 elections with 64.9% of the votes.
