COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Patterns are not only seen in
manmade and nature but also
seen in mathematics.
For example,
A, B, C, D, _?
A, C, E, G, _?
Very good! It’s letter E, teacher.
Another example.
1050, 950, 1050, 950, 1050, _? H
What is the answer?
Great! 106
Great!

X – 3 burgers = 2 burgers
We have to find the x, more like x-
3=2
X is the total numbers of burgers
and 3 are the total numbers of
eaten numbers while 2 are
numbers of burgers left (uneaten)
So, 3+2=5,
The total numbers of burgers are? 5 burgers
__ - 15 = 20
What is the answer? The answer is 35,
teacher.
Why do you think 15 is the
answer? Because we simply add
the number 15 and 20 to
get the answer 35
Okay very good.
We can change the operation and
solve the remaining two numbers
to find the missing number or
value.
Here is another example in
division.
Example number 1.
?÷8=7
What do you think is the answer?
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Another example.
204 ÷ __ = 68 what is the
answer?
Why? The answer is 3, teacher
We simply solve 204
divided by 68 and the
answer is 3. So, 204 ÷ 3
=68
Now this is the last example.
5 × __ = 20 what is the answer?
Why do you think 4 is the
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
answer? The answer is 4, teacher.
We divided 20 by 5 to get
the answer 4. So, 5 × 4 =
