ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
First I convey my deepest gratitude to the Almighty God who bestowed me the capability of
successful completion of my internship report and the internship program as well. No work
can be completed without the help of others. In every step of this study, many individuals and
institutional experts supported me. It gives me great pleasure to express my gratitude to them.
I would like to offer my heartfelt gratitude to my internship supervisor Mr. Augustine Kito.
His helpful advice and guidance have proven to be an essential starting point in bringing this
report to completion. I would also like to thank the management of the Ministry of
Communication and Technology for allowing me to intern in the ministry and giving me
thorough guidance and opportunity to move ahead with internship objectives. And finally, I
would like to thank all the personnel working in the ministry for being cordial and amiable.
Throughout my internship, I was given a lot of valuable advice thanks to their attentiveness
and cooperation. Additionally, they created a friendly and conducive work environment for
me to understand the task. This report might not have been written and completed without the
help and collaboration of all the people mentioned.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
A typical trend started by many tertiary institutions has been internship programs.
The internship stimulation workshop has been an invaluable experience, imparting
soft skills that hold significant relevance in the real world. Students have benefited
greatly from acquiring at least some professional skills. The executive summary
provides a summary of my internship, including the tasks completed and knowledge
gained over time. I worked as an intern in the Ministry of Communication and
Technology over the vacation. I worked in the IT department. The duties I performed
included. Helping in the networking department and also helping in the customer care
service desks. Reflecting on my experiences, the internship program shaped me to
become a team player Having at least a lot of theory at school, the internship
enlightened me with the practical aspect as I was exposed to real life situations on the
job. This report is preceded by an introduction, a discussion of soft skills and their
importance, a demonstration of the soft skills, lessons learned from the internship
simulation workshop, challenges faced in the Internship simulation workshop,
conclusions, and lastly references.
INTRODUCTION
The word intern was first used in the 1920s, to describe doctors who had trained in medicine
but had not yet been given a license. Modern internships as we know them came about with
the increase of people with higher education. In the US in the 1970s, only one person in ten
had a college degree today, that is closer to one in three. Back then, it was a degree that set
you apart now more people have degrees, and it's the experience you have outside the lecture
hall that can make all the difference. It is really hard to get a job when you don't have any
experience and hard to get that experience without a job. The internship is the first step on the
employment ladder. An internship is therefore a period of work experience offered by an
employer to potential employees, called interns who are usually undergraduates or students.
Internships give students exposure to the working environment often within a specific
industry, which relates to their field of study.
Here are a few reasons why an individual might decide to apply for an internship:
To gain experience (working experience) required for most entry-level positions (for a
job).
To identify career goals
To help the individual in the development of employer-value skills such as teamwork,
communication, and attention to detail.
To prepare the mental and knowledge of the individual before entering the real
working life in the future.
The Internship Stimulation Workshop (ISW) I formulated to expose final year students to the
realities of the world or work through simulation and scenario-based analysis so that they can
apply the concepts and theories learned to practical situations. Its objectives among others
are;
The Internship simulation workshop instilled in us some necessary soft skills that would be of
benefit to us in the real world.
Soft skills often called people skills or emotional intelligence are defined as the ability to
interact amicably with others. They are character traits and interpersonal skills that
characterize a person’s relationship with other people. Soft skills usually are a definite part of
an individual‘s personality. It includes attributes and personality traits that help employees
interact with others and succeed in the workplace. Examples of soft skills are communication,
leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, etc.
PRESENTATION SKILLS
Presentation skills are the abilities one needs to deliver compelling, engaging,
informative, transformative, educational, enlightening, and or instructive
presentations. The need to assess one's audience before a presentation and the type
of presentation technique to adopt is very important in communicating ideas and
holding the attention of the audience throughout the presentation process. The
process of pitching my ideas and outcomes to prospective investors within my
career choice ice relies on good presentation skills to be in line with that of other
major industrial players.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Also, building good communication skills within my career can go a long way in
helping me establish a lot of networks. These networks and connections, when
well established, can further lead to much greater opportunities. Through the ISW,
I have seen the need to adopt effective communicational skills through the
adaptation of good listening and the need to drive meaning for better consensus on
matters of relevance. The major tool that can help me achieve effective
communication in my career is by better understanding of the two forms of
communication.
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Lastly, the lesson taught on emotional intelligence has helped me gain awareness
of my conscious self and how to relate to my emotional states. This, during my
career, can be of great benefit to my decision-making, employee relations, and
dissemination of information among others. Being able to fall conscious of myself
to be able to realize my emotional mood variations, can help me to know when am
very productive and less irritated within the environment I work and also not to
conflict with the choices of my interest beyond the general benefit of others in
order not to feed on my ego.
A good relationship with customers: It has helped me learn how to maintain a healthy
relationship with customers who come to me for my services and also for help.
Expand Network Skills: It has helped me to make more friends that have helped me
build a good surroundings to help me in the work I do.
d) Financial Limitations.
CONCLUSION
The Internship Simulation Workshop ISW has been instrumental in equipping me with
essential soft skills that are critical for success in both academic and professional pursuits.
Soft skills, also known as people skills or emotional intelligence, are the foundation of
effective interpersonal interactions and professional relationships. These attributes and
personality traits, including communication, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, critical
thinking, and time management, among others, are integral to our personal and professional
growth. Soft skills foster cohesion within teams, creating an environment that values respect
and collaboration. They also signify a sense of initiative, enhancing productivity and
resourcefulness. Moreover, these skills instill confidence in my professional abilities,
empowering me to effectively navigate workplace challenges with poise and influence others.
Notably, they serve as distinguishing factors in the eyes of recruiters and organizations, as
they indicate the ability to learn quickly and independently, reducing the need for extensive
training. Reflecting on the four soft skills highlighted - time management, presentation skills,
communication skills, and emotional intelligence - each skill brings its unique advantages.
