Module Name: Method of Language Teaching

1.1. Language is a structured type of communication with grammar and vocabulary.
It is the primary means of conveying meaning, both spoken and written, and it can
also be transmitted through sign languages. The great majority of human languages
have evolved writing systems that allow for the recording and preservation of
linguistic sounds or signals.
Example: the book was translated into twenty-five languages.
1.2. A method is a set of processes that teachers should implement in class.
Methods are usually based on assumptions about the nature of language and
learning.
1.3 An approach is a viewpoint on teaching and learning. Any language teaching
technique relies on a theoretical knowledge of what language is and how it may be
learnt. An approach gives rise to methodologies, or ways of teaching something,
which use classroom activities or procedures to help pupils learn.
For example, the communicative approach is the most well-known contemporary
method of language training. One of its related approaches is task-based teaching.
The two possibilities are the cognitive-code technique and the aural-oral approach
(audio-lingual method)..

1.4 Technique refers to the actual acts and behaviours that occur when teaching a
language using a certain approach. In other words, technique refers to classroom
activities that are included into the lesson and serve as the foundation for teaching
and learning.

1.5 Fluency is described as a learner's capacity to convey meaning, not the quantity
of grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary errors they make. Fluency is frequently
compared to accuracy, which is concerned with the type, number, and severity of
errors made.

2.1. Grammar Translation Method

The Grammar Translation Method teaches grammar rules and vocabulary through
translation activities. It values reading and writing over speaking and listening. The
teacher's function is to explain grammar rules and translate texts, whilst students are
passive consumers of information. The classroom implications include an emphasis
on accuracy, little student interaction, and limited real-world language use.
2.2 Direct Method

The Direct Method focuses on teaching language directly through immersion,

utilising just the target language in the classroom. It promotes fluency by focusing on
speaking and listening abilities. The teacher functions as a facilitator, conveying
meaning through visual aids and gestures. Students are encouraged to actively
engage in speaking and listening activities. Classroom implications include a
concentration on fluency, interactive and dynamic lessons, and real-world language
use.

2.3 Communicative Language Teaching

Communicative Language Teaching aims to improve communicative competence. It

promotes both fluency and accuracy by emphasising meaningful communication in
real-world circumstances. The teacher's responsibility is to foster communication and
give students opportunity to utilise authentic language. Learners are active
participants who complete interactive exercises and use the language in real-world
circumstances. Classroom implications include an emphasis on fluency and
correctness, student-centered activities, and real language use.

Teaching Prepositions

As a student teacher, when teaching prepositions, I would employ the

Communicative Language Teaching approach. This strategy achieves a balance of
fluency and accuracy, which is essential for mastering prepositions. I'd create tasks
that challenge kids to employ prepositions in real-world situations, such as giving
directions, describing pictures, or discussing daily routines. For example, I may
design an assignment in which students must offer directions to a certain destination
using prepositions, encouraging them to focus on both utilising prepositions correctly
and communicating effectively. This technique would allow students to get a practical
understanding of prepositions while simultaneously improving their speaking and
listening skills.
