ChE 3103: Heat Transfer Processes

Spring 2020 Final Exam Duration: Take Home

Due: 05.06.2020

Note: There are five questions. Please answer all five questions for full credit. Show your work. Write and
carry units. This is an open-book, open-notes exam. Any indication of copying other’s work will
automatically set to “zero” and a report will be sent to the Office of the Dean of Students for appropriate
action.
1. (20 points). FIT has been considering using steam to heat Crawford building in winter. The authority
is considering passing steam using horizontal uninsulated 150 mm thin pipe with surface emissivity of
0.85 maintaining the outer surface temperature of 400 K. Consider the students like to maintain the
room temperature of 300 K.
a. What is the heat transfer per unit length of the pipe due to radiation? Assume the outer surface of
the pipe is grey, diffuse.
b. What is the heat transfer per unit length of the pipe due to convection? Is it free or forced
convection?
c. If the pipe covers 100 m of the building (e.g., 100 m long pipe) and the steam enters the building
at 500 K at 0.5 kg/s flow rate, what is the temperature of the steam exiting the building? Assume,
cp = 3.27 KJ/kg-K.
Please use outside air properties: ν = 20.92 × 10-6 m2/s, k = 0.030 W/m⋅K, α = 29.9 × 10-6 m2/s, Pr = 0.700,
and β = 2.86 x 10-3K-1.

2. [20 pts] Congratulation! The FIT management has been convinced that passing steam to heat Crawford
is a good idea. They have also noticed that steam is wasted after heating Crawford. Now, the management
is interested to use that steam to heat water to supply hot water for the building. They have asked you to
design a shell and tube heat exchanger, which uses the steam to heat 2.5 kg/s of water from 308 °C to 358
°C. Assume the steam enters at 473 °C and leaves the heat exchanger at 378 °C. Assume no phase change
occur in either of the streams. Assume overall heat transfer co-efficient is 180 W/m2-K. Assume no
radiation.
Using (a) effectiveness-NTU method and (b) LMTD method, calculate the overall heat exchanger
surface area.
[Note: The numeric values of problem 1 and 2 are not interchangeable, i.e., Answer for 1c ≠ 473 K]

3. [20 pts] Florida is sunshine state. FIT management is now considering solar swimming pool heater
technology. You can read more about the solar water heaters here
https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/solar-swimming-pool-heaters. Let’s focus on the solar collector
chamber. This is a flat plate collector that consists of a transparent cover plate (surface 1, ε1 =0.92) and an
absorber plate (surface 2, ε2= 0.96) that are separated by 30mm air gap. Consider the collector surfaces have
dimensions of 2m x 2m and both surfaces can be assumed as diffuse, grey surfaces. Assume the cover plate
temperature is 70 °C and absorber plate temperature is 30 °C.
a. What is the rate of heat transfer by convection? Use NuL = 0.069 RaL1/3Pr0.074
b. What is the rate of heat transfer by radiation?

3
4. [20 pts] On May 02, Melbourne reported the highest air temperature of 32.2 °C, when air was flowing at
4.47 m/s. We had a bright sunshine with a solar irradiation, G = 400 W/m2. Consider a wall of Crawford
Building over which the prevailing wind blows. The length of the wall in the wind direction is 10 m, and
the emissivity of the wall is 0.93 and absorptivity is 1.

a. Find Re and Ra
b. Is the convection free or force?
c. Find wall temperature
d. Find heat transfer due to radiation and convection
e. Which mode of heat transfer is more dominant?
[Hint: Start your iteration with assuming the properties of air at Tf =(Ts+T∞)/2= 305 K]

5. [20 pts] Have you heard about geothermal heat pumps? It uses stable ground temperature to heat/cool
during winter/summer, respectively. To learn more visit this website:

Let’s consider the earth’s surface as 10 °C and you want to use this heat to warm your home in
Minnesota. You are using HDPE pipe of 25 mm ID, 8 mm thickness. Thermal conductivity of HDPE is
0.47 W/m-K. Assume you are using water as heat transfer fluid. Water inter temperature is 0 °C (Tmi) and
flow rate is 0.03 kg/s. You have 50 m long pipe. What is the water outlet temperature of the pipe (Tm0)?
[Hint: start iterating with Tavg = 3 °C liquid water]
*Remember to use fluid properties from Appendix A6, when choosing properties of water.
