Title: Study of clipper and clamper using diodes

Objectives:
• To understand the theory of operation of the clipping and clamping diode circuits.

Components required: - Diode – 1N4007, Resistors 1k, Signal generator, Variable and
Fixed DC supply, Capacitor 0.1uf, bread board, Wires, CRO & multimeter for testing

• CLIPPER Theory: -
Clippers are networks that employ diodes to clip away portions of an input signal without
distorting the remaining part of the applied waveform. These clipper circuits transfer a
selected portion of the input waveform to the output Diode clipping circuits are used to
prevent a wave form from exceeding some particular limit either negative or positive or both.
This is achieved by connecting the diode in serial or in parallel circuit. Variable DC voltage is
connected in the circuit to achieve required level of clipping. By using different level DC
voltages, it is possible to get different level of clipping in positive and negative side. These
clipper circuits are also called as limiters.

• CLAMPER Theory : -

Theory:- Clamper is a circuit that "clamps" a signal to a different dc level without changing
the appearance of the applied signal The different types of clampers are positive negative and
biased clampers A clamping network must have at least capacitor and diode .
Circuit Diagram and procedure for clipper:

Clipper:

1. Vary Vin from -5 to +5V.

2. Measure the output on multimeter.
3. Plot on graph Vin Vs Vout.

4. Repeat steps 1 (instead give -5 to +10V) to 3 for circuit given in Fig. 2.

Circuit Diagram and procedure for clamper:

1. Apply the input as shown in Fig.3 from function generator

2. Observe the change in Vout using DSO.
3. Plot input and output on graph paper.

Conclusion: To be written by students.

Post Lab questions:

1. Are FWR and HWR clipper or Clamper?

2. Draw Voltage Doubler using diodes and capacitors.
3. Explain working of Voltage Doubler in details.
