What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the nature of Physical Education and Health. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to
follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

 Lesson 1 – Health-Related Fitness Components
 Lesson 2 – Barriers to Recreational Activities
 Lesson 3 – Introduction to Recreational Activities

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. familiarize the health-related fitness components;
2. recognize the barriers to participating in recreational activities;
3. discuss recreational activities and their categories; and
4. create a task related to health-related components through circuit training.

1

Before participating in any recreational activities, it is essential to conduct a

self-evaluation. Before beginning any recreational activity, you must assess your
physical condition and fitness level. This will help you determine which activities
are appropriate for you and which are too difficult. It will also assist you in setting
appropriate goals and tracking your progress. Furthermore, self-assessment can
assist you in identifying potential injuries or health risks and dealing with them
before they become a problem. Overall, self-evaluation is an important step toward
ensuring that you can participate in recreational activities safely and effectively.

What’s In

Activity 2: Fitness Readiness/HOTS-Critical Thinking.

How’s your status?
Physical Activity Questionnaire Readiness (PAR-Q & YOU) will help you
determine your general health status before doing any physical activity. Answer the
questions honestly by checking the box of your choice.

Physical Activity Questionnaire Readiness (PAR-Q & YOU) YE NO

S
1 Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and
that you should only do physical activity recommended by a
doctor?
2 Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?
3 In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not
doing physical activity?
4 Do you lose your balance because of dizziness or do you ever
lose consciousness?
5 Do you have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse
by a change in your physical activity?
6 Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs (for example, water
pills) for your blood pressure or heart condition?
7 Do you know of another reason why you should not do physical
activity?
Note the Teachers
The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in
the development of this competency including the schema or
background knowledge which may reinforce learning. This module
will help the learners bridge the gap of learning to attain mastery
of the lesson in its spiral progression.

What is New

Activity 3. Literacy – Reading.

Participating in a recreational activity will improve one's overall fitness level
in the following fitness areas: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength,
muscular endurance, and flexibility.

Health-related Fitness Components

1. Cardiovascular endurance: the ability to perform exercises at moderate-to-
vigorous intensities for a prolonged period of time.
2. Muscular strength: how much force your muscles can exert or how heavy
weights
they can lift.
3. Muscular endurance: the ability of your muscles to sustain exercise for a
period
of time.
4. Flexibility: the ability to move muscles and joints through a full range of
motion.
5. Body composition: your body’s ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass like muscle
and
bone.

Barriers to Recreational Activities

There are numerous influences and barriers that prevent people from
participating in recreational and leisure activities. These influences and barriers
differ for various types of activities, including physical and non-physical activities.
Personal Barriers
Some common explanations (barriers) that people cite for resistance to
exercise are:
1. Insufficient time to engage in recreational activities.
2. Inconvenience of exercise.
3. Lack of self-motivation.
4. Non-enjoyment of exercise.
5. Lack of confidence in their ability to be physically active (low self-efficacy).
6. Fear of being injured or having been injured recently.
7. Lack of self-management skills, such as the ability to set personal goals, monitor
progress, or reward progress toward such goals.
8. Lack of encouragement, support, or companionship from family and friends.
9. Non-availability of parks, sidewalks, bicycle trails, or safe and pleasant walking
paths close to home or the workplace.

Environmental Barriers
Obvious factors include the accessibility of walking paths, cycling trails, and
recreation facilities. Factors such as traffic, availability of public transportation,
crime, and pollution may also have an effect. Other factors include our social
environment, such as support from family and friends and community spirits.

Barriers to one's diet

1. Lack of self-discipline (some cannot suppress their desire to eat unsafe food.)
2. Insufficient time to prepare (sometimes unhealthful food is cheaper).
3. Few choices (usually you don't have influence over what's regularly sold in the
store).
4. Lack of self-discipline (some cannot control their urge to eat unhealthy food).
5. Insufficient time to prepare (the unhealthy foods are the cheaper priced options).
6. Limited options (you have no control over what is regularly sold in the cafeteria.

What is It

Understanding the Nature of Recreational Activities

Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure
and are considered to be “fun”. Humans spend their time in activities of daily living,
work, sleep, social duties, and leisure, the latter time being free from prior
commitments to physiologic or social needs, a prerequisite of recreation.
Individuals engage in recreational activities solely for their enjoyment,
pleasure, and amusement. Recreational activities are enjoyable, mentally or
physically stimulating activities that people plan to do when they have time off from
work or school. Bowling, swimming, kite flying, bird watching, surfing, dancing,
playing cards, and watching movies are some examples of recreational activities.

Recreational activities include a wide range of individual and large group

activities. These activities promote movement, skills, and strategies that will aid in
recognizing the value of lifetime activity. Teamwork, cooperation, and good
sportsmanship behaviors improve gameplay, resulting in more enjoyable and
successful movement experiences for all.

Activity 4. WORD HUNT.

Search for five different outdoor activities. Fill out a piece of paper with your
response.

What’s More

Recreational activities provide enjoyment because they allow one to engage

in something he/she enjoys. They bring joy and provide relaxation for the mind and
body. Indoor and outdoor activities are the two types of recreational activities.

Indoor Activities
These are also included in recreation programs. Indoor recreational activities
are those that are done in the comfort of one's own home, or more specifically,
indoors, and are intended to rejuvenate the mind and soul. There are well-
established clubs or recreation centers that provide a diverse program of activities
throughout the year for such indoor recreational activities.

Outdoor Activities
It gives us the opportunity to exercise and is thus one of the best forms of
recreation. Nature walks, river rafting, cycling, camping, fishing, hiking, adventure
parks, surfing, and sports are some examples of outdoor recreational activities.
Nature walks and river rafting are two examples of outdoor recreational activities.

Furthermore, recreational activities are divided into two categories: indoor

activities and outdoor activities. Such activities are fairly important in human
psychology. Everyone aged 7 to 70 should set aside time for recreational activities.

Activity 5: Indoor vs. Outdoor

There are many unique destinations in the northern region that are suitable
for all types of trips. You do not need to go any further north for the best outdoor
activities in Ilocos Norte, whether you want to relax by the beach, try an exciting
sport, or visit a historical landmark.
Complete the table by supplying the various categories of recreational
activities in our province.

ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES
What I have Learned

In this lesson, I learned that:

1. The five health-related components of physical fitness can be a useful guide

to help you achieve physical fitness and promote good health.
2. There are numerous influences and barriers that prevent people from
participating in recreational and leisure activities.
3. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure
and are considered to be “fun”.
4. Recreational activities are divided into two categories: indoor activities and
outdoor activities.

What I Can Do

Activity 6. Performance-based Task. Ready, Set, Go!

Regular exercise prepares your body for strenuous outdoor activities. How
much conditioning you still need to do will be determined by your plans and
current fitness level. All physical activity requires a proper warm-up. Outdoor
activities are no different. Before your activity, spend a few minutes stretching.
Determine which muscle groups you will work on and target those muscles.
To prepare for the high-intensity level of the various recreational activities,
you are tasked with developing a thirty-minute circuit training in groups of four
that emphasizes health-related fitness components. A rubric will be used to
evaluate each group.

Additional Activities

Activity 7. ICT Integration. Time to Assess!

Assessment after a circuit training program is essential for tracking
progress, identifying strengths and weaknesses, setting goals, avoiding plateaus,
and ensuring safety. It enables one to make informed decisions about your training
program, optimize your performance, and achieve your fitness goals.
Your Physical Education teacher will generate a code (ClassPoint,
Mentimeter, Google Forms) that will allow you to access the given activity and
upload your responses. These responses will be graded and incorporated into your
written outputs.
Here are some guide questions to assess your progress and evaluate the
effectiveness of your circuit training program:
1. How did you feel throughout the circuit training sessions? Did you
experience any changes in your energy levels, endurance, or overall performance
compared to when you first began the program?
2. Did you successfully meet the goals or targets you set at the beginning of
the program? If not, what factors may have contributed to falling short of those
goals?
3. Have you noticed enhancements in your strength and muscular
endurance? Can you now perform more repetitions or handle heavier weights
compared to when you initially started the program?
4. How has your cardiovascular fitness improved? Are you able to sustain
higher intensity levels for longer periods without excessive fatigue?
5. Have you observed any transformations in your body composition? Did
you reduce body fat or gain lean muscle mass as a result of the circuit training
program?
6. Based on your assessment, which aspects of the circuit training program
proved most effective for you? Are there any modifications or additions you would
consider implementing to further enhance your progress in the future?
