Module 7 Problem Set Answer Key

1. This document provides instructions and examples for calculating oxidation numbers, identifying oxidizing and reducing agents in redox reactions, balancing redox reactions, and calculating cell potentials for concentration cells and galvanic cells. 2. Examples are given for assigning oxidation numbers to atoms in different compounds, completing a table identifying oxidizing agents, reducing agents, and changes in oxidation states for redox reactions, and balancing two redox reactions. 3. Instructions are provided on calculating the potential of a concentration cell using the Nernst equation, as well as calculating the potential of a galvanic cell using standard reduction potentials and accounting for concentration. Worked examples are shown for both types of calculations.

MODULE 7

1. Assign oxidation number to all atoms in each of the following: (10pts)

a. AuCl3 Au = +3 Cl = -1
b. H2O2 H = +1 O = -1
c. O3 O=0
d. Na2C2O4 Na = +1 C = +3 O = -2
e. SO3 S = +6 O =-2
2. Complete the table based on the following redox reactions: (12pts)

a. CH4 + H2O  CO + 3 H2
b. 2 AgNO3 + Cu  Cu(NO3)2 + 2 Ag
c. Zn + 2 HCl  ZnCl2 + H2

a none Not applicable none Not applicable

b +1  0 Cu 0  +2

c +1  0 Zn 0  +2
HCL
3. Balance the following redox reactions: (8pts, 4pts each)
a) Cu (s) + NO3- (aq)  Cu2+(aq) + NO (g) (acidic medium)
Oxidation Half Reaction: Cu (s)  Cu2+(aq) + 2e-

Reduction Half Reaction: 2NO3- (aq) + 2e-  2NO (g)

Net Reaction: Cu+ 2NO3− + 4H+ → Cu2+ + 2NO2 + 2H2O

b) MnO4- (aq) + NO2-(aq)  Mn2+ (s) + NO3- (aq) (basic medium)

Oxidation Half Reaction: NO2-(aq)  NO3- (aq) + 2 e-
5NO2-(aq)  5NO3- (aq) + 10 e-
Reduction Half Reaction: MnO4- (aq) + 5 e-  Mn2+ (s)

2MnO4- (aq) + 10 e-  2Mn2+ (s)

Net Reaction: 2MnO4−+5NO2−+H2O⟶2MnO2+5NO3−+2OH−

4. A concentration cell is constructed by placing identical Cu electrodes in two Cu 2+ If the

concentrations of the two Cu2+solutions are 1.0 M and 0.0020 M, calculate the potential of the
cell.
Cu(s) l Cu2+(1.0 M) ll Cu2+(0.0020 M) l Cu(s)
In this case, the cathode and anode both are same. So, is equal to
zero.
To calculate the EMF of the cell, we use the Nernst equation, which is:

where,
= electrode potential of the cell = ? V
= standard electrode potential of the cell = 0 V
n = number of electrons exchanged = 2

0.0020 M
1.0 M (0.0020
Putting values in above equation, we get: /1.0)
0.0796 V

5. Calculate the potential (in volts) for the voltaic (or galvanic) cell indicated at 25 o
Ga | Ga3+ (10-6 M) || Ag+ (10-4 M) | Ag
E° (V)

Ga3++3e−⇌Ga(s) -0.56

Ag+ + e− ⇌ Ag(s) 0.7996

E ocell = Ecathode – Eanode = 0.7996 – (-0.56) = 1.3596 V

Ecell = E ocell – (0.0591/3) log (10-6 / 10-4) = 1.3596 V– (0.0591/3) log (10-6 / 10-4)

Ecell = 1.40 V
6. Write the cell notation and calculate the potential of a galvanic cell consisting of a lead
electrode immersed in 0.0745 M Pb2+ and a zinc electrode immersed in 0.1284 M Zn2+.
Zn l Zn2+ (0.1284 M) ll Pb2+(0.0745 M) l Pb
Lead E° (V)

Pb2+ + 2e− ⇌ Pb(s) –0.126

Zn2+(aq)+2e- → Zn(s) -0.76

E ocell = Ecathode – Eanode = -0.126 – (-0.76) = 0.634 V

Ecell = E ocell – (0.0591/2) log (Q) = 0.634 V– (0.059/2) log (0.1284 / 0.0745)

Ecell = 0.627 V
