1ère LLCE REDUMPTION SUNG

P140 Disillusion
Question 1
On the photo, we can see a black man with suitcases/ some luggage. He is in front of
a door with a paper saying “rooms to let/ no colored men”. We can imagine that he is
refused or he has been kicked out.

Suitcase: valise luggage: bagages kick out: mettre/ foutre dehors

Question 2

With this paper on the door, we can see that black people are not accepted. The
man feels helpless. He needs to be housed but he cannot because of his skin color. We can
suppose that this man is part of the Windrush generation. He may have just arrived in the UK
and he discovers that black people are not accepted everywhere. He faces racism. He came
to the Uk to find a job, better living conditions, and to feed his family; however /
nevertheless, this is the contrary. He must feel angry, sad, disappointed, even desperate.
Looking worried at the sign proves that the segregation has a profound impact on citizens.

Helpless: sans défense/ impuissant/ désarmé to be housed: être hébergé/ loger

nevertheless: néanmoins

The sentence on the door is not long or complicated but the man is staring at it. He
seems to be stuck on it.

The photo was taken from above. It is a high angle shot. It evokes submission. He is crushed
by society, racism, injustice. He has no power or impact on the situation. He is represented
as an insignificant/ unimportant person.
We can also deduce that he is at the bottom of the social ladder; the fact that he is looking
down at the stairs could mean that he could go even lower; his situation could become
worse.

High angle shot: prise de vue en plongée insignificant: insignifiant/sans

importance social ladder: échelle sociale lower: plus bas worse:
pire

We can see everything that surrounds the man. This emphasizes the fact that he is
alone and lonely. It is a full length photo, so we can see his luggage and speculate that he
can’t find a place to stay.

We cannot see his face; therefore, we can consider him as a symbol. He is representative of
his community. His shadow gives the impression that they are several persons. It could
symbolize the whole black population in the UK. It must have happened to many other
people.

To emphasize: souligner/ insister sur le fait que.. Shadow : ombre

full length photo : photo de plein pied
