1.Definition and use of total station, theodolite, and tacheometer

TERM DEFINITION USE
TOTAL It is an optical surveyor’s instrument that To measure distances from one
STATION combines a transit and an electronic point to another by using
distance measuring device. A total angular measurements between
calculates angles and distances for three points.
surveyed objects.
THEODOLITE It is a surveying instrument used to It is the most accurate
measure vertical and horizontal angles. instrument to measure the
horizontal and vertical angles.
But they can also be used for
locating points on a line,
prolonging surveying lines and
finding differences in elevation.
TACHEOMETER It is a surveying instrument used for the It is used for rapid
rapid determination of distances, measurements and determines,
elevations and bearings. electronically or electro-
optically, the distance to target.
2a. Difference between a total station and theodolite.
A total station incorporates a theodolites functions into it’s programming, measuring angles
and using an electronic distance meter. Theodolites are usually inferior to total station due to
the fact that total stations have their digital integration and more consistent precision.

2b. Step by step procedure for mounting and use of total station for surveying.
i. Gather the survey equipment, stake, and tools.
ii. Establish a new temporary benchmark
iii. Set-up the tripod
iv. Attach the tribrach and coarse level the tripod over the benchmark
v. Continue to level and adjust the tribrach as necessary
vi. Set the instrument on the tripod
vii. Connect power supply and communication cables

viii. Power-on the instrument and controller to access the fine level
ix. Fine level the instrument and compensate
x. You are ready to survey!

2c. Sources of errors in the use of EDM for survey measurements.

The error sources are classified as internal and external errors. The internal errors for EDMs can
be regarded as zero error, scale error, cyclic error and so on. These can occur due to some
deficiencies on instruments and reflectors. On the other hand, the external errors are caused by
atmospheric refraction.

3a. What is photogrammetric survey and how is its use to contemporary civil
Engineers? Use practical examples.
Photogrammetric surveys establish targeted, and occasionally non-targeted, photo control on
the ground to relate aerial photographs to a project’s horizontal and vertical datums.
Photogrammetry is use to civil Engineers in the following general areas: Interpretation of aerial
photographs, topographic mapping, planimetric mapping, presentations of reports,
experimental measurements and inventorying.

3b. Brief relationship between GNSS/GPS/GIS/AutoCAD.

GPS is traditionally refers to the north American global positioning system, GNSS is a term that
refers to the international Multi-constellation Satellite system. So GNSS typically includes GPS,
GLONASS, Baidu, Galileo, and any other. GIS is a software program that helps people use the
information that is collected from the GPS satellites. GIS use geographic coordinate systems
and world map projections while CAD coordinates are relative to the object being modeled and
are not usually relative to any particular place on earth.
