Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction
This service manual applies to SPD-20A, SPD-20AV and SPD-20A UFLC
detectors. The difference between the construction of 20A and 20AV models is
the positioning of the tungsten (W) lamp, the W lamp power supply, and the
mercury (Hg) lamp used for wavelength calibration. The difference between the
-20A and -20A UFLC is the specification of the flow cell (-20A: standard cell,
-20A UFLC: semi-micro cell). The figures in this manual illustrate model 20AV,
but the explanatory text applies to both and having the instrument available to
look at should prevent any confusion. However, please note that parts with the
same name for all models may be differentiated using different part numbers.

This manual is intended to explain the maintenance of 20A (including -20A

UFLC) and 20AV model detectors to service personnel of the instruments. It
primarily describes general troubleshooting procedures for problems that could
occur during operation, in addition to maintenance and inspection procedures
that must be performed on a routine basis. The function of certain parts and
mechanisms are also explained for reference. When performing any work on the
detectors, use this manual in combination with the instruction manual for the
instrument. Please carefully observe the precautions for installation and
operation, and make sure the instrument is maintained appropriately and
effectively before using it.

CAUTION:
• This service manual includes only the table of contents entries and no
corresponding text for subjects addressed in the instruction manual. Please
use this manual in combination with the instruction manual.

Chapter 3 Measurement systems

3.1 Optical system
Figure 3.1 illustrates the instrument’s optical system. It is equipped with a D2
lamp and W lamp (model 20AV) for the light source. The angle of mirror M1 is
used to choose between the two light sources. The angle of mirror M1 is switched
by the “LAMP” setting under the function key (operation controls). When the
mirror M1 position is switched, the lamp switching photomicrosensor detects the
angle of mirror M1, so only the selected light source stays on and the other lamp
turns off. In addition, if “LAMP” is set to “3”, then it is possible to select both
lamps. Model 20AV uses the D2 lamp for the UV region (190 -- 370 nm) and the
W lamp for the visible region (371 -900 nm). Model 20A uses only the D2 lamp
(190-700 nm).

When the angle of mirror M1 is in the position shown, the light from the D2 lamp
is reflected and focused through the quartz window and enters the slit. When the
angle position of mirror M1 is switched, the light from the W lamp passes
through a stray light cut-filter (short wavelengths) and heat-absorbing filter, then
in the same manner is reflected and focused by mirror M1 and passes through the
quartz window and enters the slit. A filter assembly (high order cut-filter or
blocking filter) is inserted in front of the slit, based on the wavelength setting.
The blocking filter is inserted to detect zero order light. The high order cut-filter
is inserted in front of the slit to filter higher order spectra in the specified
wavelength region corresponding to the wavelength setting. The filter is inserted
in front of the slit at the 371-700 nm range for model 20A and 701 nm -- 900 nm
for model 20AV. After the light beam passes through the slit, it is reflected and
focused by mirror M2 and hits a holographic grating of 1600 grooves per
millimeter, where it is separated into its spectrum. The light separated by the
grating emerges as parallel light beams that are reflected by mirror M3 and are
wide enough to straddle and enter both of the sample and reference cells. The
spectrum is generated in an orientation perpendicular to the line bisecting both
cells, so both cells receive identical light wavelengths. After passing through each

7
228-90095F

cell, the respective light enters a silicon photodiodes (D1 and D2) where it is
converted to an electrical signal that is proportional to the light intensity.

The light entering the cells, or in other words, the wavelength being measured
during analysis, is selected by changing the angle of the grating. A stepping
motor is used to move the grating via a pulley and belt. When the instrument
power switch is turned on, mirror M1 moves to the angle position for the W lamp,
then again to the D2 lamp position. The lamp switching photomicrosensor detects
the position and the D2 lamp will turn on. When the mirror M1 position is
switched, the home position for the filter assembly is simultaneously detected.
Once the lamp goes on, the grating stepping motor first searches for the home
position of the wavelength setting, then verifies the wavelength using the D2
lamp and Hg lamp emission lines. This instrument measures the amount of light
passing through the cell as the wavelength is varied and automatically identifies
the wavelengths corresponding to the emission line spectrum peaks. If these
wavelengths are within one nanometer of the emission line wavelengths, then
“CHECK GOOD” will appear on the display. Then the grating rotates according
to the wavelength setting and the lamp position switches also. The sample cell
has a flow-through type structure. The reference cell is simply a hole that lets
light pass through. The Mercury lamp is used to check or calibrate wavelengths.
The characteristic emission line of Hg lamps at 253.7 nm is used as a reference
for checking accuracy in the ultraviolet region.

3.2 Electrical system

The electrical system can be separated into four major sections, the signal
processing circuits, the light source power supply circuits, the drive circuits
(grating, filters and mirrors), and key board (operator controls).
3.2.1 Signal processing circuits
After passing through the measurement and reference cells, the respective light
beams (intensity) IM and IR enter silicon photodiodes D2 and D1. These
photodiodes generate an electrical current that is proportional to the quantity of
light. The currents K2IM and K1IR generated from D2 and D1 each flow
respectively through high resistances R2 and R1 and are converted to voltage by
A2 and A1. The respective outputs from A1 and A2 are converted to digital
signals by AD converters M22 and M23 and those values are converted by
logarithmic transformation in the CPU. The CPU processes the absorbance range,
zero adjustment and signal response from values entered via the operator
controls. The logarithmically transformed output voltages are reconverted to
analog voltage using a DA converters (M30 and M31) and a portion of that
voltage is sent via resistors to the AUX terminal as integrator output. Similarly,
resistors are also used to output 10 mV signals as data recorder output.

3.2.2 Lamp power supply circuits

The deuterium lamp (D2 lamp) is controlled via a fixed current circuit to provide
a stable light source that is not affected by power fluctuations. In addition, this
circuit has a fixed discharge current for automatically turning on the lamp. A
high voltage is applied and the filament is heated until the lamp is illuminated. If
the lamp does not turn on after several attempts, an “ERR D2 LAMP” message is
displayed. If the lamp turns on normally, “D2” will appear in the lower left part of
the initial display screen. The tungsten lamp (W lamp) is turned on and
stabilized via a fixed voltage supply. The display indicates when the W lamp is on
as well. Unlike models SPD-10AVvp and SPD-10AV, model SPD-20AV allows
both the D2 and W lamps to be illuminated simultaneously. (As noted above, the
position of mirror M1 switches according to the wavelength setting, so only the
light from one of the lamps will enter the cells. Furthermore, the cooling fans for
the lamp housings will turn on after the lamps have been on for thirty minutes.)

Chapter 7 Additional explanations

This service manual refers to special mode functions (power is turned on while
pressing the “Func” key), but this mode is reserved for Shimadzu service
engineers. To avoid confusion, do not reveal this mode to customers.

7.1 Differences from previous models

7.1.1 WAVE ADJ / WAVE CHECK / WAVE CALIB functions
The WAVE ADJ function was moved from being an AUX function to a
special mode function on SPD-10Avp and -20A models. In its place, the
WAVE CALIB function was added to the VP group. This is to prevent
operators from indiscriminately calibrating wavelengths.
The WAVE CALIB function is basically the same as combining the WAVE
ADJ and WAVE CHECK functions, but features such as leaving a log
record of calibration results have been added. Therefore, for SPD-10Avp
and -20A models please use WAVE CALIB instead of WAVE ADJ.

SPD-10A SPD-10Avp/ -20A Description

Yes Models 10A, 10Avp and 20A are the
WAVE ADJ Yes (special mode only) same
WAVE CHECK Yes Yes Models 10A, 10Avp and 20A are the
same
WAVE CALIB No Yes Almost same as WAVE ADJ + WAVE
CHECK

7.1.2 Clearing lamp usage times

Clearing D2 and W lamp usage times on models SPD-10Avp and -20A has
changed from being an AUX function to being a VP function. This is so
maintenance information can be collectively displayed and operated on in
one location. When “0” is entered for “D2 LAMP USED” or “W LAMP
USED”, the lamp usage time is cleared and lamp replacement information
is simultaneously recorded in the “MAINTENANCE LOG”. As before,
usage times can be displayed using AUX functions.

7.1.3 Changing the gain of operation amplifier

After the mirror M1 is fine-adjusted as described in Amendment F in this
Service Manual, optical energy may become saturated. Check the energy
after adjustment. If the energy is over the standard level, lower the gain
of the operational amplifier by the procedure described below.

7.1.3.1 Checking the light intensity

After the optical system is adjusted using the added jig (for fine adjustment of M1),
the light intensity may increase by several percent. This may cause saturation of
light intensity due to a variation of the lamp or optical element. When no measure
has been taken for the pre-amplifier (PB-1 ASSY), attach a new D2 lamp and check
the light intensity by the procedure described below. If the light intensity is over the
standard level*1, lower the gain resistance of the pre-amplifier by 7 % using a jumper
wire and solder. This modification is unnecessary for instruments where a
pre-amplifier for micro cells*2 is attached.

* 1: The light intensity standard (upper limit) differs according to the type of the
MAIN board (PCB, SPD20-MAIN ASSY); new or former. The new and former
boards can be distinguished by the BOARD identification no.*3 serigraphed on
the MAIN board.
* 2: The gain of the pre-amplifier on the RE side is maintained at a low level on
instruments where a micro cell is attached. Thus, the light intensity does not
saturate even after the optical system is adjusted using the added jig (jig for fine
adjustment of M1), leaving enough allowance. Therefore, modification is
unnecessary.
* 3: How to distinguish new and former MAIN boards
They can be distinguished by the BOARD identification no. serigraphed on the
MAIN board.

When using a semi-micro 1400 mV 2200 mV limit, the operational

When using a micro cell Modification is unnecessary.

 Upper limit of the light intensity when the identification no. is “228-42031C”
or“228-53021”
Cell SE RE
When using a standard cell 3100 mV 3100 mV If the value is over the upper
When using a semi-micro 2000 mV 3100 mV limit, the operational
cell amplifier needs to be
modified.
When using a micro cell Modification is unnecessary.

7.1.3.2 Procedure to check the light intensity

(1) Attach a new D2 lamp and light it up.
(2) Fill the flow cell with deionized water
(3) Set the wavelength to 220 nm.
(4) Check light intensities SE/RE. If the value is over the standard value, lower
the gain of the pre-amplifier (PB-1 ASSY) by the procedure described below.
Modification is unnecessary if the light intensity is under the upper limit.

38
228-90095F

7.1.3.3 Changing the gain of pre-amplifier (PB-1 ASSY)

If the light intensity is over the standard level after the optical system is adjusted,
lower the gain of the pre-amplifier by 7 % by the procedure described below.

* The lamp and optical elements (e.g. mirror, grating) of instruments where the
pre-amplifier has been modified may have to be replaced in several months to
several years depending on use frequency. In this case, the light intensity may
exceed the standard value due to a variation of the lamp or optical element
attached. However, no additional modification is necessary for instruments for
which the pre-amplifier has been modified once because there is enough
allowance in light intensity saturation voltage.
* If wax contained in soldering material remains on the surface of the board after
modification, it may cause poor insulation and eventually noise. If the board is
soiled, wipe it off with Kimwipe with a small amount of ethanol or IPA.
* Take out the PB-1 ASSY from the optical unit and modify the soldered face of the
PB-4 with an alignment of gain resistors mounted on the PB-1 ASSY using a
jumper wire* and solder as shown in the figure below.

7.2 Additional VP functions

7.2.1 Serial numbers
Instrument serial numbers have not been assigned when shipped from the
factory (numbers are set to “00000”). Please set the correct serial number
when installing the system.
(How to set the serial number)
① Startup system in special mode
② Go to the serial number function in the VP group
③ Enter the serial number corresponding to the label included with the
main unit.
(The beginning digits have already been set.)
CAUTION
Serial numbers are 14-charater codes beginning with the letter “L”.
Correctly enter the first 12 characters, but the last two characters (an
alphanumeric code indicating the manufacturing plant) do not need to be
entered.
Example: L21004101234J9 = L2 100 41 01234 J9
L2: LC model type 100: model # 41: Production time
01234: sequential # J9: factory

7.2.2 Usage time

Clearing the D2 and W lamp usage times was explained above, but if the
usage time must be changed for whatever reason (replacing a circuit
board or loss of memory, etc.) startup the system in special mode. The
time settings for ”TOTAL OP TIME”, ”D2 LAMP USED”, and ”W LAMP
USED” can each be changed in the special mode. A lamp replacement
record will be recorded in the ”MAINTENANCE LOG” even when
changing the “D2 LAMP USED” or ”W LAMP USED” values.

7.2.3 Log records

None of the log records can be deleted.
7.2.4 Date and time
Each log records the date and time of each event, but model SPD-20A does
not have a backup clock, so the expression of date and time may differ
depending on the system status.
① When an SCL (CBM) controller is connected or when date and time
settings have been entered, dates for log entries will use the format
yy-mm-dd.
② When an SCL (CBM) controller is not connected or when date and

40
228-90095F

time settings have not been entered, dates for log entries will use total
system usage time values, expressed in the form T000001 (total usage
time of one hour)

7.2.5 Password
Instrument calibration and hardware related settings are performed using
the calibration support group functions. Password security is provided to
prevent operators from changing these settings. Passwords are set to
“00000” when shipped from the factory, but customers (instrument
administrators) can change it freely. In the event a customer forgets a
changed password, perform the following.
① Startup the instrument in special mode
② Enter “00000” for the password setting (the special mode allows either
the correct password or 00000)
③ Set a new password

7.2.6 Absorbance compensation factor (ABS COMP)

This is a correction factor used to compensate for differences in
absorbance resulting from variations in hardware between SPD
instruments (such as flow cell length). For example, if a coefficient of 0.9
is entered, absorbance will increase by about 11 percent (1/0.9 = factor of
1.111), but a setting of 1.000 should normally be used.

7.2.7 Automatic leak sensor correction (LEAK CALIB)

This feature automatically corrects for differences in sensitivity between
the measurement side leak sensor and reference side leak sensor. If the
leak sensors are left dry, ”LEAK CALIB” is displayed and the Enter key is
pressed, then the leak sensors will be calibrated automatically. Always
execute the ”LEAK CALIB” function after replacing a leak sensor.

7.2.8 Leak sensor threshold level (LEAK THR)

The threshold level is determined according to the following procedure.
(The “XXX” portion of “ActLv XXX/255” is read as the threshold value.)
① Read leak sensor output with no leakage. (A)
② Dribble water on the leak sensor and read its output. (B)
③ Add a value that is about 0.7 times the difference between reading A
and B to A, and set it as the threshold value.
A + 0.7× (B - A)
CAUTION

41
228-90095F

① Always execute the automatic leak sensor correction (LEAK CALIB)

function before changing the leak sensor threshold level (LEAK THR).
② Check that the leak sensor tip is not touching anything plastic.
③ Keep the front panel closed during measurements.
7.2.9 Compatibility of D2 lamps with previous models
D2 lamps for SPD-10A and SPD-M10Avp models can be used in SPD-20A
systems. The intercompatibility of D2 lamps is shown below. In addition, D2
lamps for model SPD-20A are compatible with SPD-10Avp systems.

7.2.10 Voltage at data recorder output terminal

The recorder output terminal voltage for model SPD-20A is 10 mV. If the
recorder input full scale is 1 mV, use one of the following methods to change
the full scale level.
① Set the AUX function RANGE setting to1/10.
② Reduce the output voltage by inserting a resistor between the SPD
system and recorder unit.

42
228-90095F

7.2.11 How to update the ROM version

(Jigs required for update)

7.2.12 Changing the power supply input voltage

On SPD-20A and SPD-20AV models, the power supply input voltage is
switched by turning a rotary power supply input voltage switch to the
desired input voltage. However, always disconnect the power supply plug
before performing this procedure. Also, be sure to replace the fuse if the

7.2.13 The cautions at the time of linearity compensation [LINEAR

CALIB] operation
If CE key is pushed suddenly and linearity compensation is canceled in the
middle of operation of linearity compensation, while the energy by the side of a
rewriting rate and a sample had also displayed 0mV on the unusual parameter,
the output according to energy will become impossible.
In such the state, since 253.7nm (Hg) and 656.1nm (D2) are undetectable,
[CHECK NO GOOD] is displayed.
Please perform linearity compensation correctly.
When sample side energy is set to 0mV, please take a measure in the following
procedure.

(1) [4] inputs [LINEAR CALIB] while on display, and make linearity
compensation into initial value.
(2) Perform wavelength proofreading.
(3) Perform linearity compensation again.
(4) Please once end re-start a power supply.
